Artist Spotlight: Adam Lupton
Canadian artist Adam Lupton’s gaze explores psychological and sociological struggles in modern society. Painting in oil, blurring lines between realism and expressionism helps Lupton probe the internal and external dialogue faced in his multi-directional narratives. His recent work pits moments of choice against the visualization of their outcomes: temporal planes coexisting on a singular surface. With the notion of quantum mechanics having every possible outcome to a situation realized in splintered universes, he paints figures with varied levels of connection to reality. To question our process of free will as well as our concepts of space, time, fate, and self; if every decision comes true in one parallel life or another, are we as free as we think we are?
PS: Adam Lupton was kind enough to share his thoughts on creativity for Creativity Decoded. Read his take on creativity HERE.

Major project Evaluation
My theme for this project at the beginning was about double personalities on social media, how we are tricked into posting things that society will approve of and will like. Researching into this I realised that it was more about social media and its negative effects within social media.
Now days it is so common to see people on their phones instead of socialising. I wanted to look at this in a different perspective as well because I know there are two sides when it comes to social media. I researched into it and realised that most people use their phones in order to get away from an awkward situation/anxiety.
The artworks I have created for the research and development for this relate to my theme because I was specifically looking at people who were in the moment of them being engaged with social media and were not aware of their sorroundings.
I choose to have photographs for most of my pieces because I thought that it related to my theme and that it made sense to use camera/phone. I also wanted to create images of someone taking a picture of someone taking a picture.. and so on. I did do paintings at the start but I decided that the photos were more effective.
I don’t find my final piece a well enough developed one, so I don’t consider it finished at all. I ran out of time and I could have developed these further, maybe using a phone that doesn’t have a good quality camera to create that effect.
For my presentation I could have mounted my work, or made frames for them that looked like Iphones.
If I was to do the project again, I would be more organised and concentrate more at the start of the project so that by the time of first crits, I would have a clear idea of where I am within the project.

Developments after the feedback. I gave James the booklet filled with the phrases and got him to read them out loud. He did not know the contents of the book until he opened the first page.
He smiled and chuckled at some phrases because he said that they were so stupid that he found them hilarious.
The dark room added tension and nervousness at the beginning and strong lighting directly on the face created a dramatic appearance.
At the end, I asked him how he felt before, during and after reading. (documented in sketchbook)

Exploring homelessness. Experimenting with fabric - gives a feeling of comfort and protects from cold but also has a symbol of death. (I already took photos of Rowan but these are of me as i wanted to see if anything changes if i do it, if i’d feel differently or if it’d take me in another direction - which it didn't.

Using Mac as my human paintbrush (similar to Yves Klein’s methods) inspired by the term nation: society is made up of different footprints, they work as a way of identifying a person (similar to fingerprints) and the classic footprint is such a relatable and iconic image. Also links to the term “tribe” which is associated with nation by many.
