How to stop losing your keys, and start improving your memory.
Our memories are fragile things, and they’re not always perfect. How Stuff Works gives a detailed breakdown of how memories are formed but basically it boils down to the fact that the process of memory encoding is a complex one, from categorizing memories to creating room for new ones, a lot of things are involved when you’re creating new memories
So don’t be alarmed if you keep forgetting things, as it’s perfectly normal. Here’s a list of things you can do that we've compiled, to help improve your memory,
We’re sure you’ve experienced walking into a room and totally forgetting what you were doing there in the first place. It’s almost like somebody hit a reset button, and for a good minute or two you can’t remember your purpose.
Visualize
Dr. Zaldy S. Tan, Director of the Memory Clinic at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, recommends visualizing what you need or what you want before you start walking into a room. If you were going in to get your car keys, picture yourself starting the car and driving off before you get into the room. Vividness is the key to boost your memory. Dr. Tan recommends to link items you want to remember with something familiar. If you want to get your summer clothes out of the basement, before you set out, think of yourself on the beach or beside a pool in your swimsuit. This system makes the items more vivid and therefore more memorable
Play Video Games

Yes you read that correctly, video games actually help your brain, and your memory in particular. Contrary to what your mom may be yelling at you for years, playing video games has an actual cognitive benefit as proven by UC Irvine’s Greg Start and Dane Clemenson. They did experiments where they asked non-gamers to play Super Mario 3D World, and tested their memory. After 2 weeks of constant playing, their subjects showed a marked increase in hippocampus function, a part of the brain that stimulates memory amongst other things. This short video explains the duo’s findings and results.
Use Music
When you were a child most of the really important things you had to remember were put into the lyrics of a song, like the letters of the alphabet, the names of your fingers or even how to cross the street
Henry Roediger III, Professor of Psychology at the Memory Lab at Washington University in St. Louis explains that music provides a rhythm, a rhyme and alliteration, three things that provide a structure to unlocking information stored in the brain, with the music acting as a cue.
So it would help if you turn the things you need to remember into a short song or a rhyme, it doesn’t have to be a good one, but using music as a device definitely helps you to remember better.
Interact more to remember names
Names, while simple enough, are often the toughest things to remember. We’ve all been in that awkward sabaw moment where you just smile and nod while talking to someone, while frantically trying to pull up their name from your memory.
Forbes gives us a few techniques to help us remember the names of the faces we meet . All of it has to do with interacting with the person you’re being introduced to, whether it’s making better eye contact to focus on the person, asking them a question, or introducing them to someone else to make you say their name aloud - all help to create an association between the name and the face. Interaction gives the name context and will help you remember them when you associate the name to the context when you met them.
Utilize your visual memory
Our memory is divided into both visual and verbal memory, and while we commonly practice verbal memory through rote memorization, using acronyms, our visual memory is much more powerful. This video from Memorize Academy shows us just how powerful our visual memory is, by associating words with pictures and creating a story, visual memory makes use of all your senses and creates memory landmarks in our brains to help us associate words with images we’ve formed ourselves.
Supplement with B Vitamins

Studies have shown B Vitamins help in improving brain functions. B vitamins helps improve your memory, Kerry Grens of Reuters tells of an Australian study that shows that adults who have taken B Vitamins for two years showed modest improvements in both short-term and long-term memory versus adults who did not take it.
B vitamins can be acquired through a carefully planned diet, but to help you get the needed amounts you can take Glutaphos.
That rounds up the list of uncommon tips to help boost your memory, if you’re looking to ace a test, Buzzfeed has 11 tips from a memory expert that has more specific methods to help you prepare.
Memory retention is a process, trust the process, follow the tips and you’ll be rid of your sabaw moments in no time!
Have you tried any of these? Let us know how it went for you in the comments!
