De wereld - de management samenvatting

Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Filipijnen, Australië, Indonesië, Nieuw Zeeland, Chili, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Panama D: anders dan veel mensen denken en sommigen je willen doen geloven, is de wereld geen gevaarlijke plaats. Er zijn wel gevaarlijke stukjes, maar die kun je eenvoudig vermijden. R: goedkoop vliegen is leuk voor jezelf, maar eigenlijk is het de pest voor de wereld. Veel mensen vliegen gerust voor 2 weken naar de andere kant van de wereld -wij ook- omdat het kan. D: toerisme raakt meer en meer ingeblikt. Voorverpakte tourtjes, speciaal transport, etc. Eigen initiatief is ver te zoeken bij de huidige generatie reizigers. R: veel toeristen betekent meer inkomsten in de toeristensector, waarbij nog steeds vooral de expat uit de westerse wereld het rijkst wordt. D: grote delen van de planeet gaan in rap tempo naar de vaantjes, met name door menselijke activiteit. We zijn blij dat we al eerder hebben gereisd, en als je nog wat wil zien moet je niet te lang meer wachten. Bali kun je alvast overslaan... R: het is maar zelden perfect. Schijnt de zon, is het veel te warm; woon je in een fantastisch land, regent het te vaak; is de temperatuur precies goed, wordt je lek gestoken door de muggen; heb je een fantastische duikspot gevonden, zijn er net deze maand geen hamerhaaien. D: lieden die nog immer niet geloven dat het klimaat drastisch aan het veranderen is, moeten eens gaan reizen... R: het is verbazingwekkend hoeveel aardige mensen je tegenkomt in de wereld. D: en hoe weinig onaardige! R: maar het is nog verbazingwekkender hoe angstig mensen worden ten opzichte van hun medemens als ze regelmatig voor de tv zitten en het nieuws kijken in hun huis met sloten voorzien van het Politiekeurmerk Veilig Wonen. De wereld: best aardig met een drankje er bij en nog rond ook!

Groningen, the Netherlands. Home, sweet home. Fourteen months, one week and one day ago, we left. We find it hard to believe.

Casa Túcan, our favorite hangout in Playa del Carmen. Even before we left, we decided to end our trip here, before embarking on the flight back home. That means we have one night left in the tropics. That also means some alcoholic beverages are in order. It probably means a lot more, but for now we can't be bothered. Pura vida!

Counting down! The last two days I've started to throw away my travelling clothes. A few more items I will leave behind before going home. I just have to keep my winter clothes. It is spring in Holland, but that doesn't mean it is warming up. But seeing back all my friends and family will bring back some warmth.

Panama - De management samenvatting

San Blas (Guna Yala), Panama City, El Valle de Anton, Santa Catalina, Boquete, Bocas del Toro D: van alles en nog wat: jungle, caraïben, koloniale cultuur en pacific kust R: geef mij de Caraïbische kust maar. Zandstranden, zon, heerlijk blauwgroen zeewater van een lekker temperatuurtje, prachtige eilanden vol palmbomen, hangmatten, kokosnoten en cocktails. D: nog veel inheemse cultuur, met name te zien in bijzondere kleding. Met name de Kuna zijn een bijzonder volkje. Kleurrijk en trots. En een blikje bier of pretsigaret gaan er altijd in! R: Panama-city is een mooi Unesco project. De totaal verwaarloosde gebouwen worden prachtig na een grondige renovatie. In de toekomst wordt het nog mooier. Helaas verdwijnt een groot deel van het gesponserde geld in de diepe zakken van bepaalde lieden D: panamezen zijn bijzonder ontspannen. Je maakt ze de pis nauwelijks lauw en morgen is er vermoedelijk wel weer een dag. R: maar in de verkeerde wijk wordt het 'dijn' toch al snel 'mijn'. Dat hebben we alleen van horen zeggen, maar we geloven het direct. Geen inkomen, maar wel veel drank en/of drugs maakt al snel dat anderen, locals of tourists, doelwit worden. Toch zijn ook deze mensen supervriendelijk tegen ons. Verheugd dat we ons -een beetje- in hun omgeving begeven. D: panamese radio moet toch echt wel het dieptepunt zijn in radio uitzendingen. We hopen in elk geval van wel. Dan is Giel plotseling bijna filosoof. R: duiken in de Pacific is prachtig; scholen met kleine manta roggen en veel rifhaaien op een paar meter afstand. Maar dan moet je wel in de goede periode langs komen, want ons zicht was zo mimiem dat we elkaar nauwelijks zagen, toch hadden we geluk qua roggen en haaien.

There isn’t much time left to post our travel adventures, so we might as well give you our latest craft beer pic. A seriously hip place in San José, Costa Rica. Lots of young people, tattoos, soccer haircuts, trendy clothing, little dogs and... us.

Our last land border crossing on this trip: using an old railway bridge to get from Panama into Costa Rica. We were hoping for something seriously dodgy, just to round it off, but alas, no hassle by money changers, no invented departure or stamp taxes, no shady types offering all kinds of services. Just a border crossing. You can't have it all.

Election day in the Netherlands. Just to be on the safe side, we have started practicing for the New Order.

This is heaven! A lonely beach on Isla Colon, Bocas del Toro, just behind the very touristic town. Only a few locals on the beach and very few tourists. No plastic on the beach, just some seaweed and nice lukewarm seawater. One would expect a beach with bars, terraces and beach chairs, being so close to town. We think that the tourist industry is so strong these days, that people don’t think for themselves anymore. If you don’t have to pay for it and there is no pick up service from your hotel it is not worth a visit. Lucky us!

Trying to find the resplendent quetzal in the cloud forest of Boquete, using a trick we saw the guides in Nepal use. Didn't help us finding a tiger then and a quetzal now. But it surely makes you look like an experienced wildlife tracker, which is not bad either.

Sendero el Pianista, Boquete. At this sign, erected after the tragedy, the trail ends, and Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon should have turned back, nearly three years ago. We hope they liked yellow flowers.

Colombia - De management samenvatting

Santa Marta, Palomino, Minca, Cartagena D: We hebben maar een héél klein stukje van Colombia gezien, aan de caraïbische kust. Dat jullie dat even weten. R: En daarmee was Colombia niet heel veel anders dan de landen in Zuid Amerika waar we ook zijn geweest. D: Wel heel veel straattheater, met name streetdance. Bij vlagen spectaculair. En rappers die bij je tafel komen rappen. R: Meer muziek ook, op straat, in de bars, bij mensen thuis. Een beetje meer outgoing. D: Meer uitbundig, dat is het woord. Maar ook al veel toerisme voor een land dat jarenlang niet al te veilig was. Cartagena is al een boetiekstad. Weinig budget voorzieningen meer te vinden. R: Van te voren hoorden we van mede-reizigers dat Colombianen zo super vriendelijk zijn en het zo'n prachtig land is, maar wij hebben dat niet gezien. Niet vriendelijker of mooier dan bijv. Bolivia. D: Sterker nog, je komt in Colombia meer onvriendelijke mensen tegen dan elders in latijns Amerika. Of stug. Het Drenthe van de Andes :) R: Tuurlijk joh, lekker stug wijf heb je ook. Wel interessant vond ik het feit dat in Minca de guerilla's tot een jaar of 7, 8 geleden daar het hele gebied controleerden. Geen toeristen, maar ook geen andere Colombianen die daar niets te zoeken hadden kwamen er. Een hele andere wereld dan nu, ook voor de locals.

Meet Símon Bólivar, the great liberator of the top part of South America. Every city has a statue, some streets and plazas and the odd building or two in his reverence. He might have liked a bit more appreciation during the last years of his life: he died a lonely and bitter man. So it goes.

Panama City with a splendid view from our luxury hotel. We didn’t pre book a hotel and arrived during carnaval, both wondering where we would end up. So we jumped out of the taxi, where some other german backpackers went out too. They didn’t book either, but had been before in this nice hotel. A steep 66 dollars for a room. Pricey, but hey, it’s a place for the night. They where lucky, we weren’t: they got the last room. Taking our backpacks, we tried 2 other hotels, but all full. The 3rd had another hotel under renovation, a few rooms ready: aircon, private baños, new matresses, and just very cheap, 17 dollars. Let’s check it out. Walking out the Casco Viejo, the well patrolled Unesco area, we started to understand why it is so cheap. The area is starting to look exceedingly dodgy. The first guy we meet, wants us to walk upstairs in a filthy building, shouting Hotel, Hotel. The next one tells us to go back, because the neighbourhood is too dangerous, about fifty meters from our target. But the hotel has a room and the room is very okay, so we take it. With only one way to get out of the area, the rest of neighbourhood is inaccessible for us, we walk back to the tourist area. Santa Ana, north of our street is a no go zone for gringos, so is El Chorillo at the end of our block. Not too bad, hey! A guy passing us, is greeting, while making a hand sign with a invisible gun. Warning or threat? We decide that for 17 bucks per night, we can afford to get robbed at least once if we don’t carry too much money each time. Welcome to the banana republic of Panama!
