Goku wasn't there for Gohan's birth
Because being with Chichi while she was in so much pain and unable to do anything to ease it caused him so much stress it was stressing her out too and making it worse, so he was sent away to do something else.
Which ended up being finding the perfect hat for their son and attaching the four star DragonBall to it
#im rewatching dragonball#and this came to mind#idk if it was ever explained why#but im choosing to believe he wasnt there BECAUSE of that#he cares so much for chichi and to be unable to help her was too stressful and frustrating#and seeing him so upset upset her#thus he was sent to do something productive#and i think thats a cute idea#gochi#goku x chichi#i also thought of him making the crib but they probably already did that

On a slightly more pleasant note: “But he didn’t even LIKE Chi-Chi!” There’s a difference between not being used to types of physical affection and disliking someone. If Goku really couldn’t stand her he wouldn’t have ditched Kami after his offer AND all his friends AND brought the “strange girl” with him. (That’s Goku for “hey, you’re kinda neat and I want you around”, FYI.)
