something that breaks my heart every day is that—in crime and punishment—raskolnikov TRULY believes that razumikhin is different than everyone else. he thinks he’s better than the others, kinder, smarter (his words, not mine), and for that he’s someone to trust. raskolnikov also believes that the majority of people are louses and has a superiority complex, yet contradicts himself in proving his sentiment towards razumikhin.
razumikhin believes that raskolnikov is better than the others, he’s just misunderstood. he becomes actively agitated, and often aggressive, when they can’t perceive raskolnikov the way he does. because he sees something they don’t when he looks at raskolnikov: intelligence, a kindness hidden poorly, the goodness. he sees the goodness in everyone, or at least sees the PERSON in everyone, of course—but no one will he defend to further extent.
like, no matter which connotation you view their relationship with, the way they perceive one another is so special and inevitably heartbreaking. they both think the other is better than everyone else around them, or different, at least. anyways.

Raskolnikov and Razumikhin walked, so that the black cat and golden retriever dynamic could run.

Raskolnikov’s fixed and burning gaze seemed to gather in strength at each instant, piercing Razumikhin’s soul, his awareness. Razumikhin gave a shudder. Something strange seemed to have taken place between them… Some kind of idea had slipped out, a kind of hint; something horrible, hideous and suddenly comprehensible to them both… Razumikhin turned as white as a corpse.
‘Do you understand now?’ Raskolnikov said suddenly, his features painfully twisted.

if i’m going to live with Raskolnikov-level ennui, paranoia, and indecision, i could at least have a best friend who’d beat up his relative defending me for a crime i absolutely committed.
