I love how "Sinners" didn't villify the sinners in the movie. Sammie's father told him that playing music for "drunkards and philanderers who abandon their family responbilities to sweat all over each other" was a sin. And he was right about the kind of people going to the juke joint: Delta Slim is an alcoholic, and Pearline a cheater. It would have been easy to villify them, but the movie tells us that despite their flaws, they are humans worthy of love, respect and freedom.

Delta Slim drinks because he's traumatized by the horrors Black people of his time face. And he's kind and compassionate, encouraging and reassuring Sammie, and sacrificing himself to save everyone else.

Pearline literally saved Sammie's life and sacrificed herself to protect him, a boy she had only known for a day. It shows her kindness because she could have easily stayed back when Remmick tried to bite Sammy and not endangered her life more than necessary.

The movie shows us that preachers blindly condemning those sinners are wrong: Sammie is only alive because drunkards, philanderers and gangsters (Smoke) gave their lives to protect him. They are people, with flaws and qualities.

I love how nuanced the movie is: Sammie's father is not wrong about the kind of people Sammie wants to associate with and their potential bad influence, but he's wrong about them being evil and not deserving of respect.

We're super excited to let you know about one of our first post-fundraiser endeavors that we can finally put into your hands! It's our Spanish Language Capsule Collection! ✨

With the money raised this year, we're able to add over 400 Spanish-language queer stories to our collection. We're adding a combination of adult, YA, and juvenile; fiction and nonfiction; ebooks, audiobooks, and comics. Some titles were written originally in Spanish and some are in translation.

Many thanks to everyone who responded to our survey last October - that helped us identify Spanish language materials as something that our library patrons want! 🌈📚

So, the other day, when I was discussing AO3's policy on solicitation, a tumblr user came at me saying that AO3's "no monetization/solicitation" rules were "bullshit" because nexus mods allows fan created mods to get paid.

love the library. there's no risk. you can take out a book and go "wow this sucks" and just give it back. and when you do that you're still making the library's Number Go Up so you'll be able to roll the dice on even more books. all for the low low price of free/you already paid for it with your tax money so you might as well use it

Time to get back in the saddle, folks! It’s time for Yeehawgust year 7 and there are starry skies ahead.

Yeehawgust features daily art prompts as well as alternative weekly prompts, for those of us who are a bit slower on the draw. Don’t draw at all? No problem! Submit any art at all, be it illustration, comics, writing, fanfiction, photography, embroidery, sculpture, music, or whatever other creative endeavors you might enjoy. What matters is that you made it with your own hands, and all skill levels are welcome! 

Maybe you love media like Red Dead Redemption and Fallout: New Vegas, or you’re a fan of the western genre. Perhaps you want to see your blorbos in boots and spurs, or put your OCs in a Stetson. Heck, you could just like drawing horses. Whatever the reason, you’re welcome to join in, pardner!

I’m just saying if Daniel Radcliffe, the literal protagonist of the Harry Potter franchise since the age of ten years old, was able to disavow JK Rowling and move on from the HP universe then actually what the fuck is anyone else’s excuse. There is no one else on the planet who can say their entire childhood was HP more than that guy and he still cared about trans people more than the average tumblr user who says “we’re protesting by making all her characters queer and trans!!” like you can do better. You should do better.

Ok but Katniss’ worldview is so falsely transactional I’m really wondering how much the “kisses=sponsor gifts” is really Haymitch’s actual message. Like how much of that was performance rewards and how much was Haymitch being like I have an exorbitant amount of money from a crowd enthusiastic to see them both live, so I can get them both out if I provide meals while they recover like Mags did for me while meanwhile Katniss is like I Know Exactly What He’s Saying. I Should Kiss Peeta More. Kiss Equals Reward Yes?

The way you know Katniss and Peeta are drift compatible is they both walk into their final skill assessments for the Quarter Quell against everyone who’s ever won the Hunger Games and get so mad they decide individually last minute to do performance protest art pieces that wind up perfectly building on each other to make a pretty compelling statement
