200521 Marie Claire Interview (Jun. 2020) - Miyeon & Shuhua
You marked your second anniversary recently.
Shuhua: I was surprised. It feels like two years went by just in a blink of an eye.
Miyeon: We did a second anniversary live broadcast and read letters that we wrote to ourselves during our first anniversary. It was only after reading the letter that I felt the time that passed. I also thought maybe I should value this short period of time that can pass by easily.
You made a wish in front of the cake during your second anniversary live broadcast. What did you wish for?
Shuhua: I wished that the members would be healthy. Also I made two more wishes, but I’m not going to say it here. People say that wishes wouldn’t come true if you say it. (Laughs)
What is the image of yourself that you remember the most in the past two years?
Miyeon: Personally, from debut till now, I think I’m changing little by little. At the same time, it’s a shame that I always show sides that I’m lacking each time. I want to remember days that I thought I did well, but there’s still nothing I can think of exactly [right now]. I’m only expecting that day to come.
Shuhua: For me, when I did the intro for ‘LION’. When I was assigned to do the intro, I was very nervous and had a lot of concerns. I even cried a lot after finishing the first stage while feeling a sense of relief. I think I’m not going to forget that moment for the rest of my life.
What changed in these two years?
Shuhua: I think we became freer.
Miyeon: Yes. As we were still new to everything before, we went up the stage thinking, “We can’t make a mistake here, we must show this much”, but now we think, “We hope people watching this can feel as much happiness, we hope this time spent is meaningful”. We definitely don’t feel as pressured now and enjoy it.
Is there any compliment or feedback you want to give yourself who passed those times?
Shuhua: I worked very hard every day for the past two years. I want to compliment myself for that. And for feedback - to wake up and quickly start exercising.
Miyeon: If I were to look back, there may be times where I feel I could have done better, but I have no regrets. Because I think I did my best. However, I think I should have more greed. Although there are lots of things that I show with the team, I started thinking that I should show more sides of myself by going on <King of Masked Singer> or uploading song covers. Showing something through new units instead of a group like today would be good too.
Is there anything you tried with the two of you like today?
Miyeon: It’s the first time. Whether it’s broadcast programs or stages, we often do it as six. Even if we split into twos or threes, I haven’t done anything with Shuhua alone.
Why do you think it’s the two of you doing this today?
Shuhua: Visual? Or maybe because it’s a new and refreshing unit. It’s new for us too so we’re curious as to how it would turn out, but I think we’ll look good together.
I heard you both are called “Tom n Jerry” among your fans.
Shuhua: I am the “Jerry” and Miyeon is the “Tom”.
Miyeon: I am sloppy and Shuhua is a meticulous person. Shuhua is good at reading the room and reacts well to it. She is quick-witted. There are times where our roles switched too. Even though she is like a playful little sister, she takes care and comforts me well.
What is your role among your group members?
Shuhua: I am someone who wants to do everything quickly.
Miyeon: But you wake up late every day. Haha.
Shuhua: I become hard-working as soon as I wake up.
Miyeon: We had our roles at first, like Soojin as the mom, Soyeon as the dad, Shuhua as the cute maknae. I think as time goes by, the assigned roles slowly disappear. There are times where Shuhua becomes like an unnie, and Soyeon becomes someone who follows instead of someone who leads.
Is there no more boundary between being the eldest and the youngest?
Miyeon: No, I don’t think there is anything like that. Maybe because I’m the oldest?
Shuhua: I think there is a boundary. Maybe because I am the maknae, they don’t listen to my opinion. They will say “oh, okay”. So sometimes I just stay quiet. The members have to see this so please write about it.
Miyeon: If that is the case, I don’t have [the voice] either. The loudest voice in our group usually leads the mood. Usually, it is Yuqi, Soyeon, or Minnie. Haha. Because I have a small voice, I don’t really give opinions. Even if I say it, it usually gets buried.
I think each member has a clear role in music. If Miyeon's voice makes a stable and firm melody, Shuhua's voice tends to create a decisive moment.
Miyeon: You are right. Any song made by Soyeon, even if she didn’t write the parts with names, you can tell this part is made for this member after listening to it. I really like it, because it feels like we’re doing our own roles well. But still, sometimes I would want to get out of the box.
Is there any member’s part you want to try?
Shuhua: Instead of a song or rap part, I want to try Soojin unnie’s ‘Oh My God’ gesture at the last chorus where she raised her hand up.
Have you ever felt sad when other members stand out during their personal schedules or wanted them to know how you feel about it?
Shuhua: Nope. It is still hard to do it by myself. I am timid and become really shy when I am alone. Last time, I attended a radio schedule alone, I was so shy that I couldn’t even speak properly. I think I will need a bit more time to have a personal schedule.
In the future, people will find out more about you individually instead of as a group. What kind of image do you want to show?
Miyeon: If there is a chance, I want to try singing a heavy R&B genre song. Also, I like listening to people’s stories and communicating with them so if I were given a chance, I want to become a radio DJ.
Shuhua: I want to show something just like today through pictorials and also a variety of images through acting.
Do you have any goals or wishes as a group?
Miyeon: We tend to set realistic goals instead of something abstract like “Let’s be more successful, let’s  be more famous”. We would say “Let’s do well for this album” or “Let’s fix this part”. We’re okay with not achieving 1st place or dropping in popularity. Those aren’t our goals. It is our wish that the 6 of us do something that we want to do.
Shuhua: I think our fans like it that way too. They always tell us this “(G)I-DLE, just do whatever you want”.
Are you doing everything that you want to do?
Shuhua: Almost everything.
Miyeon: I hope we will not be swayed or want to chase something else and focus on doing what we want to do like right now even in the future. Someday, there might be not enough time or freedom to focus on doing what we like. I hope we don’t forget the thoughts we have shared together at the beginning.
On the contrary, is there anything you want to change?
Shuhua: I wish we could talk less during filmings. It’s hard for interviews to proceed because we talk too much. We cannot stop chattering throughout filmings like we’re at a preschool. It’s like there is no end to it.
Miyeon: I don’t think we can ever change that. (Laughs).

191025 Wengie x Minnie Vibe Magazine Interview
INTERVIEW WITH WENGIE
Q: What is the reason behind picking Minnie out of all the many other K-pop idols?
Wengie: (G)I-DLE is one of my favourite girl groups. I fell for their unique concept when ‘LATATA’ came out. In particular, I knew Minnie sings with a beautiful melody as the group’s main vocalist, I thought she would be good if she tried a new style like ‘EMPIRE’ and also rapping. And as you can see, Minnie did it perfectly!
**
INTERVIEW WITH MINNIE
Q: When you first heard of this project and also the message behind this song, what were your thoughts?
Minnie: Before I received this proposal, I’ve watched Wengie’s YouTube videos before so I was really happy and honored to receive this collaboration proposal. Especially because this is my first time featuring individually, it was even more meaningful. I was excited and also really wanted to do well. Because of the cool message the song conveys as well as the energy, I think people who listen to it can relate to it.
Q: It’s a different style from (G)I-DLE’s songs though?
Minnie: I think the song has a different kind of powerful from (G)I-DLE’s songs. As I am the main vocalist of (G)I-DLE, I usually am in charged of the singing [in our songs], but I got to try rapping this time so it was a new and fun experience.
Q: You are attracting a lot of fans while promoting with (G)I-DLE as well as the recent appearance on <Queendom>, what is something you want to tell your fans?
Minnie: I always enjoy music and I am working hard to show you an improved version of myself. I hope you can look upon me prettily and I will become a cooler Minnie in the future. Please show me lots of support! 🙂
Q: During the process of composing or recording the song, what is something you found you both have in common or have synergy for?
Wengie: I realized quickly that the both of us joke/play around a lot but when we start working, we become serious and professional. When we shot the music video, we were tired from the repeated shooting, but we stayed side by side and cheered for each other - I think that’s how we ended the shoot well without losing energy. I keep remembering the moments where we match the choreography and performance for the music video.
Minnie: Even though it was Wengie’s first time recording in Korean, her pronunciation was accurate and she fitted it well - that was when I realized she is a very hardworking person. When we were matching the choreography, I was really surprised because she is such a good dancer and I could see the result of her hidden sweat and hard work at the shooting location. It was a work where I realized that there is something different to professionals.

Marie Claire (Jan. 2020) Interview - Minnie, Soojin
I think you guys are really popular recently. Even today, there are a few staff members that are fans of you.
Soojin: I heard that a few times today when I was doing the photoshoot and interview. However, it (the rise in popularity) still doesn’t feel real for me.
Minnie: I think a lot of people started recognising us after our appearance on <Queendom>. Back then, people wouldn’t recognise us when we had makeup on, but now, people recognise us even when we have no makeup on. I was a little surprised.
Is it too late if we fell for (G)I-DLE only after watching <Queendom>?
Soojin: Not at all. We are still new too. We have lots to show in the future, so I think it’s more than enough to start looking forward to us now.
Did you foresee yourselves receiving this much attention?
Soojin: No. To be honest, we didn’t have confidence since pre-debut.
Minnie: It isn’t an easy thing. As the days go by and more idols started appearing, we thought about how to let people notice us among them and it felt hard. Because we are just one of the many groups who are putting in effort and trying their very best. We couldn’t even imagine this situation (receiving attention).
That’s a surprise. Because an occupation like being an idol is hard to continue without confidence.
Soojin: We had one promise before debut among us. Even if we don't succeed, we wanted to be a group who enjoy making music. So we just had fun while preparing. I think that appeared positively on stage.
Which stage do you think portrays that ‘fun’ the best?
Soojin: I think we had the most fun doing ‘Uh-Oh’.
Minnie: Before that, it was nerve-wracking just to stand on the stage, but we found confidence while doing ‘Uh-Oh’.
Only the two of you stood in front of the cameras today instead of the whole group. I think it feels different from when you are all together.
Minnie: I think it got a bit quieter. But also because there is only the two of us, we are talking more.
Soojin: I’m not more nervous just because there is only the two of us. It’s actually easier. Because the process is a lot quicker. (Laughs)
Is there a word/nickname for you as a duo?
Minnie: SuMin. It’s a name that our fans gave us when we did our first VLIVE together. I usually do [broadcasts] with Yuqi and Soojin usually does it with Shuhua, so maybe that’s why people found our pairing refreshing to see when they saw us doing it together.
Is there a charm [of each other] that isn’t shown much to others and only you know of?
Minnie: Reversed charm?
Soojin: Ah, she’s saying she has reversed charms with her own mouth. (Laughs)
Minnie: Heuheu. When Soojin is with others, she doesn’t talk much and appears cold, but when she’s with me, she talks and plays around a lot. She becomes cuter.
Soojin: Minnie unnie doesn’t change much no matter who she’s with. Her personality has always been bright and is full of aegyo.
Minnie: No. It’s different with you. When I’m with Soojin, I have even more aegyo.
Is there something you enjoy doing together in your daily lives?
Soojin: We both love shopping. Also, I really like taking walks. I go with Minnie unnie sometimes too.
Minnie: Me, Soojin, and Shuhua are the types of people who must have breakfast. We always wake up early to eat even when we go overseas.
I heard both of your music preferences are similar so you have a shared playlist.
Minnie: Soojin listens to music a lot and she’s very good at finding at hidden great songs rather than the popular ones. I liked all the songs that she recommends since a long time ago. Billie Eilish is one of the singers we both like. Soojin said that she likes the song ‘Idontwannabeyouanymore’ when we were trainees and that was how I found out. We both like music that are calmer and have a darker atmosphere.
Give us one song recommendation out of the songs you listen to recently.
Soojin: Lolo Zouaï’s ‘Money Diamonds Roses’. [Her] mysterious vocal is very charming.
What attitude do you take regarding your music? Are you the kind to be at the forefront of change?
Soojin: Rather than being the forefront, our attitude is closer to ‘let’s show our style’ and ‘let’s make music that we can do best’. But there are times we are afraid too while doing it. One part of us is always worried that people wouldn’t like [what we do].
Was there a song that you were particularly worried about?
Soojin: I have no confidence in powerful dancing so when we were preparing ‘Uh-Oh’, a hip-hop bass song, I was really worried. But it was fun after trying it. I think I learn as I do it.
Minnie: As I am a foreigner, I spend a lot of time understanding the lyrics. The lyrics for ‘Lion’ were really hard. I was wondering what it meant while reading it at first.
‘I’m here to play hard to get’, ‘You look into my eyes and feel threatened by this music’, there are a lot of poetic lyrics in the song.
Minnie: There are a lot of hard to understand sentences. When I see words that I don’t understand while reading it. I look them up in the dictionary and study.
You have to go through a difficult process every time while worrying if people would like it - what’s the reason for challenging new things despite it?
Minnie: Because it’s music that we like. Also, I think it’s impossible to predict the public’s reaction. We have no idea if they would like it or not until we release it. The reaction to ‘LATATA’ from the people around us before it got released was not good, but it was better received than expected. Even if it is worrying, we have decided to do what would make us contented.
When you first listen to a song, are you the type to have a consensus as a group?
Minnie: The reaction has always been good.
Soojin: The kind of music we like is different for all 6 members. Minnie unnie likes songs that are more emotional, Yuqi likes songs with strong beats and powerful hip-hop, Miyeon unnie likes groovy music, Shuhua likes ballads, and I like medium tempo music. Soyeon listens to a wide range of music. But strangely, with regards to (G)I-DLE’s music, I think we all think similarly. Also, because Soyeon writes a song thinking of each member, we always end up liking it.
What kind of thoughts do you have as you monitor your stages? Other than doing well or bad, I think there are things you feel while looking at yourself on the stage.
Minnie: As our concepts are very distinct, it feels different every time. They are all me, but it feels like I’m looking at a different person for every stage/performance. Like an actress acting as a different character every time.
Soojin: I think ‘Put It Straight’ was the one with the strongest concept, but I wasn’t surprised when I monitored the stage. I just thought, ‘it came out just as I imagined’ and ‘it looks alright’.
I think that’s the reason why people say there is something different about that (Put It Straight) stage. Becoming the speaker of the song and acting through singing and dancing. Do you also practice your expressions?
Soojin: I actually cannot practice my expressions while looking at the mirror. I just imagine myself on stage while listening to the song.
Minnie: I think of the song as a story and the kind of expression and image I would have if I was the person.
There are also people who say you do not care about looking pretty on stage.
Soojin: We totally exclude looking pretty for our stages. I even thought people would think that we are being over the top with the acting, so we are thankful that people see it that way. That’s what we wanted.
The stronger the concept for a stage is, the harder it is to pull it off right? If you do a little more, it becomes burdensome, but if you do a little lesser, it looks awkward.
Soojin: That’s right, so we hold many discussions to not go too over.
You have been on a steady march since debuting 1 and a half years ago. Where do you think (G)I-DLE is at right now?
Soojin: I’m not sure. Perhaps in the middle?
It’s so fast to be halfway through only after a year and a half.
Soojin: Really? I want to achieve more faster. There’s still a long way going up.

(G)I-DLE GQ Korea (Jan. 2020) Interview - Minnie
It’s like your eyes are half-closed. I feel like I’m going to get bewitched [by them].
I didn’t know if this was good in the past. Because I look like I’m sleepy, it was my complex. I’m thankful that [you/people] like them.
You have an aura of someone who does not belong to this world. When you sing the “Darkness, heart bruising” part (from Put It Straight), I really thought I was getting bewitched.
That’s the part that I like too. I really liked that I got to do it for the ‘Put It Straight’ stage. I thought I could do it well.
[You] felt like a mermaid, but also like a witch.
People said that I looked like the character ‘Tomie’ from the manga….
That’s a horror manga though.
Really? It’s something scary?
A scary beauty. Her voice is also deep/dark and languid.
My voice gets heavier and darker when I sing pop songs, but it gets a bit brighter when I sing Korean songs. I try to sing Korean songs with the tone I use for pop songs so that I don’t sound cute.
But you become bright and cute the moment you get off stage?
I think of it as acting when I go up the stage, like getting in character to match the concept. [I] wear a mask. I have to throw this [cute] Minnie away on the stage.
Which Minnie do you think is the real Minnie?
The current Minnie.
What kind of songs do you like?
Billie Eilish, Troye Sivan, and I like Charlotte Lawrence recently. I like songs where I can hear the artist’s voice clearly rather than songs with great musical instruments or arrangement.
Your self-composed song ‘Blow Your Mind’ was good. It’s light, captivating, and suits your voice well. Do you not have plans to compose another song like that?
It was a song that I have written a long time ago, but because it didn’t really fit the color of the team, [I] left it for the time being. Whether it’s a R&B song or a total pop song, I will try to write a variety [of genres]. I tried to write an exciting song this time. If it fits the concept of the next album, it may be included as a b-track.
I heard that you are rich in emotions. And have lots of tears.
Yes. When I watch a sad movie, I fall into it very easily and cry. But the problem with this is that sometimes, [I’m] in a situation where I shouldn’t be crying, but because I can’t control my emotions, I start crying. The other party is not at fault so they might misunderstand if I cry. So I tried very hard so it doesn’t cause misunderstandings. I can kind of control it now.
Do you get affected by the weather?
Very. I get gloomy on a rainy day. I like autumn, but [you feel] lonely during autumn. Haha.
Do you need lone time?
A lot. I play hard when I go out and when I’m alone, I’m totally alone. I usually play the piano alone. I have a few chords that I like. For example, I repeatedly play ‘River Flows In You’ in a variation of chords. I recently fell for drawing videos. I can’t draw, but my mood becomes better when I watch drawing videos.
You said you wanted to become a movie director when you were younger?
Yes. I like watching making films of movies and I like movies like <Call Me By Your Name>. There are movies where you don’t get it at first, but you get it after watching the second time, right? I like those kind of movies. I also wanted to become a photographer.
You were taking photos earlier too.
I fixed the film camera that my mother has been using for 25 years and [the photos] come out very prettily. Look at this, Thailand’s scenery, my parents. But I only take pictures well with the film camera and not the phone camera. Haha. I had various dreams, but I wanted to become a singer the most ever since I was young.
How was it like when you first came to Korea?
There was a period where I was the only foreign trainee when I came to Korea. I lived in the same form as another young trainee who was still a student and the kid would only come at night, so it was very lonely. Because it felt like I was alone. But the unnies and oppas took care of me well and I held on while thinking of my parents. With the thought, ‘I must succeed’.
How is your Korean pronunciation so good? It’s my first time seeing a foreigner as the main vocalist of a K-pop group.
I copied a lot. I sang while following [the original]. I repeatedly watched videos of the seniors I like and tried to follow them. Until it sounds like a Korean singing it.
Your motto is ‘Live as you imagined’. What’s the meaning of it?
Coming to Korea, to the past me, was something that I thought could never happen. Will I be able to go to Korea? Even debuting in Thailand is hard though? But I debuted in Korea and am doing activities well, right? If you put it as much effort as you dreamed, you can do it.

(G)I-DLE GQ Korea (Jan. 2020) Interview - Miyeon
Today’s concept suited you the most unexpectedly. You have a ‘good girl’ image, but you also bring the wild feeling to life. Do you like it?
Yes. It’s my first time trying a style like this, it’s new and nice.
You have a classic 90s idol image. Neat look, jade bead-like voice, a model student feel.
I’m not a model student. Hahaha. To be honest, I didn’t know I would give off that kind of impression when I debuted. Because I don’t think of my personality as innocent and well-behaved at all. But everyone sees me that way after I debuted.
Is it not right?
I don’t hate it. But that’s not all of it.
When I hear Miyeon’s vocals in the chorus, I feel at peace. It’s like you balance things among the younger ones.
We each have a role in the team. Although I’m the oldest in the team, I’m the one who you can think of as a friend that you can be comfortable with more than anyone else. I think that’s why I’m able to balance things.
Like Tom and Jerry, maknae Shuhua and your bickering is what makes the team fun.
That’s how close and affectionate we are. We enjoy it now. Haha. Maybe because I’m an only child in my family, it’s nice to live together as a group. It’s like I got real siblings.
You trained for a total of 8 years. How did you get through that period?
8 years is a long time. The process was like attending schools and studying continuously. Like going to the company as a school while I stopped attending the real school. When I left the company after I didn’t get to debut, I wasn’t frustrated. Because I still learned and gained a lot there when I left, so I didn’t feel the need to regret those times.
You’re the only child right? I think you grew up receiving love.
My parents have always allowed me to do what I want. Violin, piano, swimming, art, I learned a variety of things. They wanted me to have many hobbies and experience many things as I live.
I think that affected [your] temperament too. Instead of pushing [yourself] to accomplish your goals, [you] take it easy and go with the flow.
Yes. I followed the waves and flowed like a stream and got to where I am now. That never changed. Because I’ve always had my biggest goal which is to become a singer. To achieve my dream of becoming a singer, even if I have to leave the company, even if I have to go through a longer process, as long as I become one in the end, I made it. Maybe I could have achieved the goal sooner if I was greedier, but I think there is no need to rush, regardless of what it is. However, after meeting the members, I also learned a lot from people like Soyeon who is full of passion.
How is the stream flowing after meeting the team?
It’s flowing well. Not just me, but all 6 of us. We’re going to start having more and more choices, and we’re going to make good choices, and I feel that we’re going to keep going in a better direction. I felt it through <Queendom>, and [I feel that] every moment.
What’s your favourite season?
Sunny summer.
What about color?
Green. Because I’m the calm type, I like those things. Things that give you strength.

(G)IDLE GQ Korea (Jan. 2020) Interview - Soojin
When Soojin dances, you get sucked into it. How do you feel when you dance?
I’m just thinking of the next move [of the choreography]. Because I forget moves often….
You who have over a million views for your fancam?
I’ve actually never had confidence in dancing. It’s only when the public likes it that I know it was okay. I get really nervous too. I thought it would be obvious [that I’m nervous] but I guess it isn’t.
Your expressions and gestures are just as talked about as your dance. When you scrunched your nose for “누가 뭐 겁나 (nuga mwo geobna)?”, when you erased your lipstick for the Put It Straight stage, those became hot topics. Did you prepare [the gestures]?
I go up the stage with it prepared at first. For ‘Put It Straight’, we knew from the meeting that it was going to be a crazy concept, so I tried erasing my lipstick. Sometimes [the gestures] come out impromptu too. Just… I start imagining before I go up the stage. How I’m going to look up there. How I’m going to do this part, how I’m going to change the choreography for this part, the feeling comes to me. Although I can’t really explain it well.
You look like a beast on stage, but you’re actually shy in person.
I’m really shy.
I heard you’re quiet and affectionate. When Shuhua came to Korea, she only remembered you so she followed you around.
I don’t have a lot of aegyo, but I remember things well. Even when I’m looking at my phone, I’m actually listening to everything around me. If [someone] casually said that there’s something they want to eat, I remember it and make it for them at a later time.
You were popular, right? And received lots of confessions [from others]?
Haha. There wasn’t none. But I don’t get embarrassed at that. I’m straightforward. That’s better. Because the other party might get hurt if [I] don’t resolve it well.
When did you start dancing?
I learned jazz dance in my 1st grade of elementary school. My mother told me to try dancing too as she was an aerobics teacher. I did taekwondo in the middle and fell for it, but started dancing again after.
When you were young, did people around you said you were quite a dancer too?
My grandfather always told me to become a singer since I was young. I’ve never sung or danced in front of my family because of my personality and shyness. I wonder why he said that… It’s very interesting.
When did you want it as an occupation?
5th grade of elementary school. I danced to Girls Generation’s ‘Gee’ for a talent show then. When I went on stage, I didn’t care about the gaze of others and it was really fun. That was when it became my dream to do it.
You were going to debut in another group before [(G)I-DLE] but it didn’t work out. How did you get through that time?
Yes. The environment and experience back then was so bad that I didn’t want to become a singer again. I wanted to lead a normal life. But my father, who was against me becoming a singer, supported me a lot so that I don’t give up on my dream. After meeting the current company, it has been smooth-sailing.
What kind of dance performer would you like to become?
I want to bring medium tempo music to life without it being boring. I think I can do that well. A song like Taemin sunbaenim’s ‘Move’.
Aside from dance, what else do you like?
Walking. I like discovering new roads while walking. I walked with Miyeon unnie in Ho Chi Minh recently. We went to the beach, saw the cathedral, and people-watched. The both of us walk a lot when we go overseas. There was once we wanted to walk based on our intuition and got lost. We walked for 3 hours in the opposite direction of the hotel.
Are you a spontaneous person?
Yes. I do what I want to do at that moment.
Which time of the day do you like?
Dawn. When everyone is sleeping. I like it when it’s quiet. Being alone too.
