Return of the Superman

Episode 9

It is Christmas morning, and Jinyoung-abba is excited to spend the morning with his little reindeer.

You nudged Jinyoung awake as the night begins to lighten into dawn. As a rule, you never slept with the heater on because being under the comforter with another person made it easy to become hot. But the flip side meant that mornings was cold and brutal. 

He tightened his arm around your waist. “Just fifteen more minutes.”

“We have to get to your parents’ house by eight. Come on, baby, we need to get up.”

He groaned in response before sitting up. “Fine. Force me out into the cold then.”

You laughed as he rolled out of the bed. Because it was early, it gave you enough time to get dressed before getting the baby. After taking a shower, making breakfast, and putting on your Christmas outfit, you went to get Yeji.

Your baby was already awake, a smile on her face. You hiked her up on your hip and brushed her hair back. Recently, Yeji’s hair had grown so long that when she slept, her hair bunched up behind her ears. You changed her diaper on the changing table and laid out her clothes.

“How is my Gongjunim?” Jinyoung appeared in the doorway, a jingle bell necklace around his neck and a Christmas hat slung atop his head. “My little elf. My little reindeer.” He holds up a brown reindeer ear headband and reaches for Yeji.

“Ah-Ah! She needs to eat first. Then she can play Rudolph.”

He pouted as you walked to the kitchen.

Yeji’s Christmas breakfast consisted of cinnamon oatmeal and two apple slices. As she ate, she watched The Grinch, mesmerized. The tree glittered in the background. While she was starting to reach the age of being able to feed herself, Jinyoung insisted on spoon-feeding her.

When she was done feeding her, you dressed her in her outfit. She had a red tutu with white trim, a white shirt that said “My first Christmas”, and a red bow. Before you could do her hair, Jinyoung stuck the headband on her head. 

“One last touch.” He put a red paint dot on her nose. 

Awww look how cute she is. It’s Santa and Rudolph!

Yeji screamed as they looked in the morning. You snapped a picture, smiling.

Your Christmas morning was off to a good start.

Top 10 Least Favorite Books

(not necessarily in this order btw)

1. My Almost Flawless Tokyo Dream Life; Rachel Cohn (This book was a birthday gift from my friend. Excessive cursing for absolutely no reason. Tokyo felt…how do I put it? Touristy and fake. The love interest wasn’t introduced to the very end and he wasn’t even that likable so I don’t see the point.)

2. Interview With The Vampire; Anne Rice (It’s not that I hated the entire book…but it started to get weird. If the author wanted to say the vampires are gay, she should have just said it outright instead of dancing around it. The characters practically do nothing for most of the book and when it finally reaches the climax…I don’t even know.)

3. To Kill A Mocking Bird; Harper Lee (So yeah…I’m from Alabama. it’s not that the book is bad, it’s just wayyy too overrated. The book seems to concentrate on Atticus and it’s supposed to be some kind of racial aware book…but it’s really not. All I really felt that resolved in the book was Scout meeting Boo Radley. Nothing changed in the town in terms of race.)

4. Wuthering Heights; Emily Bronte (you know, every now and again I try to pick up this book to see if I can make it past the first three pages but I seriously can’t. Just no.)

5. 1984; George Orwell (Paranoia, red, dystopian rolled into one book. The book repeats itself in terms of philosophy and while I get what Orwell is trying to say, most of his ideas are too impossible to ever come true. The ending was trash, and there were a few rapey undertones with Julia and the sex instinct that made me want to gag.)

6. The Looking Glass Wars; Frank Beddor (It was a good concept with a re-telling of Alice in Wonderland but it had way too many time skips and the description was pretty bland. I didn’t really empathize with any characters.)

7. House; Christina Lauren (This was one was supposed to be a horror but at no point was I scared. Something about the romantic relationship between the main characters was off. There were other reasons why I didn’t like it but it was so unmemorable that I don’t remember lol)

8.  The Goddess Test; Alice Carter (This felt like it was trying to be the romantic version of Percy Jackson mixed with Twilight and yet it failed. The plot line was rushed, characters were weak…the mythology was weird too)

9. Forest of a Thousand Lanterns; Julie C. Dao (This book was East-Asian inspired, so I really wanted to give it a go. However, the pacing was weird. I didn’t like Wei, the love interest. The protagonist became a villain at the end but I really felt like she didn’t have as much fight at the end. Like she just walked up and got everything she wanted. Not to mention, she was kind of unlikable as a protagonist but maybe y’all vibe with that idk.)

10. Divergent; Veronica Roth (This book felt like it was trying to be Hunger Games but was so poorly written that its just a fanfiction. I can’t even tell you why they’re rebelling because the reason is so unmemorable that it doesn’t even matter. Trish or whatever her name was plain, Four was plain. This whole book was just plain.)

Top 10 Favorite Books

(not necessarily in any order btw)

1. The Picture of Dorian Gray; Oscare Wilde (the dramatic flinging on the divan did it for me. Also the prose of Oscar Wilde is just so pretty)

2. The Wedding Gift; Marlen Suyapa Bodden (this book takes place in my home state, Alabama. Of course it had to be about slavery and incest! However, there is a happy ending and the plot is interesting.)

3. Jade: A Novel of China; Patt Bar (this book is so longggg, but it has my name in the title, and it is about China during the late 1800s which is really cool)

4. Al Capone Does My Shirts; Gennifer Choldenko (I forgot what happens because I read this book like five years ago, but this isabout some boy living on Alcatraz who wrote a letter to Al Capone or something.)

5. Crazy Rich Asians; Kevin Kwan (I read the book first, but even the movie wasn’t bad although it cut a lot out. Very entertaining, classy, and humorous.)

6. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter; Seth Grahame-Smith (WHAATTT? Is that historical fiction combined with fantasy? Coming mother…)

7. The Great Gatsby; F. Scott Fitzgerald (the weird thing is that Fitzgerald’s books, combined, fill me with a lot of inspiration. The Great Gatsby is probably my favorite though. The prose is just so beautiful even though his plots are usually simplistic and his characters all sound the same across his books.)

8. The False Prince; Jennifer A. Neilsen (This series was so freaking good that I went back to the bookstore to get the second book after reading the first book that same day.)

9. Percy Jackson Series; Rick Riordan (this is probably more nostalgia than anything else, I haven’t picked up a Rick Riordan book in a long time but his books took me to worlds beyond my bedroom back in elementary school.)

10. Ender’s Game; Orson Scott Card (Tbh, I’d probably hate this book if I were to pick it up now, but I loved this book so much that it made me start writing my own stories)

Next I may do books I hate the most :)
