To be fair - I was super transparent otherwise in my profile. Re : South Korea - in fact, the registration of what is basically your Korean social security number is very much in line with its draconian defamation laws.

You'd think, in a country with sasaengs and cyberbullying problems up the wazoo, this would be a good thing, right? WRONG.

As far as I know, the only people who actually profit off of defamation laws (and the linking of registration numbers) is mostly far right politicians. I personally know a few people (more than 2) that have been successfully sued by far right politicians for "slander" when it was a criticism of their policies.

While it's true that mandatory identity verification will inevitably be leaked on a massive scale, the thing you need to understand when framing these arguments is that a lot of the folks in favour of such measures don't see that as a bad thing. Full de-anonymisation of the Internet is their explicit goal. Like, the actual objective here is for everyone to have a public record of everything they say and do – online or otherwise – linked to their government ID. The universal panopticon is the good ending as far as these people are concerned.
