I think that the fear of mischaracterising Andre and Cal that a lot of people in this fandom suffer from greatly impairs the creative works in this fandom.

What I mean by that is that we as a fandom have essentially “he would not fucking say that” ourselves into a corner where artists and writers are too afraid to create anything that separates itself from canon too far in fear of scrutiny.

I understand that Andre and Cal are complex characters and seeing them and their motives being ‘mischaracterised’ can feel frustrating and even insulting but at the end of the day nothing fan made is canon and not everyone is going to have the same takeaway from Zero Day.

99% of the fics in this fandom are 1k-5k words of smut or DDDNE with nothing too plot heavy and while there’s nothing wrong with that it shows to me that people aren’t comfortable making anything that strays too far from canon and that makes me sad. Bring forth the AUs!!!

At the end of the day just create whatever makes you happy regardless of how you think people will respond to it, it’s all fiction and who gives a shit if Andre wouldn’t say that, if him saying that makes you happy then write it down!
