I’ll never stop raving about how casting mads mikkelsen to play Hannibal lecter was a stroke of genius. He’s such a deviation from the book description of Lecter and any previous on screen portrayal of the character.

The choice to cast a tall man with incredibly sharp facial features was the move. While Hannibal is described in the book as being short and sleek (and subsequently being portrayed by Hopkins and Cox, who both fit the description), it just makes more sense to me that such an intimidating man would have the physicality to back that. He literally dwarfs any scene partner he has. And his face

The lighting is constantly used to accentuate the sharpness of his features and how ‘skull-like’ he looks. His looks and body language combined perfectly capture that scary-haughty-intimidating -sexyinascaryway vibe.
