I used to post about SU exclusively on here as that was the whole reason I made a Tumblr account. And then I grew up and became more aware of the world and people around me and wow.... Honestly a show about Everyone Should Be Friends (Gay) being bashed repeatedly with mostly racist commentary (Garnet is black this is scary??? I didn't forget how many people just agreed with that one racist as hell SU review) was insane but as more episodes were coming out actual good and important criticism was being made and got buried by. people retroactively love to make shit up about the (in)famous steven universe shattering debate, which really pisses me off because for all of the love i have for this show (and trust me, its a LOT of love), everyone fails to mention the reason it began was because of Bismuth (the episode) - and one thing i think most people with a critical eye can agree on is that Bismuth (the character and episode) are one of the biggest shortfalls that show had! the argument wasnt just "why doesnt this child want to kill people grrrr" it was "why are you introducing a new character who is a Black revolutionary (literally!) and positioning her antagonistically in opposition to steven, and by extension his white mother, as being In The Wrong on the topic of 'killing dictators during war'".

OBVIOUSLY the show was not going to endorse murder, but doubly obvious that steven specifically would never be able to accept that as a viable strategy. but the problem was entirely within its framing, as the show literally has him say "that would make us just as bad as them". and i mean do i really need to spell out why "killing dictators during war makes us just as bad as the dictators who have at this point in time literally done something tantamount to genocide then sewing all the bodies of those genocided people back together into a bioweapon". the show constantly wants you to take the gem war and its consequences as seriously as a show with that target demographic can, but then... sort of backpedals lol.

ATLA hinges its pacifistic message on aang's values, specifically, with him acknowleding the necessity to murder (and everyone around him encouraging it!), but his hangup is a refusal to bend his own morals. SU does this differently - and yes, in the end, it (mostly) works out as we learn the diamonds are a much more allegorical antagonist than previously though. but that doesnt become clear until VERY late in the show!

idk i think people looking at this argument and going "um its a cartoon what do you expect" are selling short the other kinds of topics SU tries to tackle as seriously as possible, and how those topics are usually handled quite well. im not saying the message is Bad or whatever but it was undeniably executed poorly sometimes! thats fine! it was such an ambitious show i dont really hold it against it these days but cmon.
