Tae：　昨日さぁ、めっちゃ恥ずかしいことが会社であってさ。

Hana：　どうしたん？

Tae：　プレゼンを各部署の人たちにする予定だったんだけど・・・。

Hana：　あ～そう言えば先週末言ってたな。

Tae：　そう。で全員が集まったところで、上���が「はい、それでは田中君、お願いね。」

って言った途端、頭の中が真っ白になってさぁ。

Hana：　なんで？　けっこう前から準備し始めてたやん？　準備が整ってなかったん？

Tae： 自分を過信してたのかな、前日に練習を全然しなかったんだよね。

Hana：　で、どうなったん？

Tae：　一緒にプレゼンの準備をしてた同僚が助けてくれて、何とか終わった。

Hana：　その人にはたっぷりお礼をしなあかんな。

Tae: I made such a fool out of myself at the office yesterday.

Hana: What did you do?

Tae: So, I was supposed to give a presentation in front of all the department heads.

Hana: Yeah, I remember you told me about it last weekend.

Tae: Well, so, everybody was sitting in their chair and my boss said “Okay, Ms. Tanaka, you’re up.”

As soon as I heard him say that, my mind just went blank.

Hana: Why? You started working on that a while ago. I thought you were prepared.

Tae: I guess I overestimated my ability. I didn’t practice at all the day before.

Hana: So, what happened after that?

Tae: Well, A good coworker of mine who was working on it with me did the entire presentation.

Hana: You might wanna send the coworker a nice bottle of Champaign or something.

Hana：　事実を言ってるだけやで。

Ana：　この前さぁ、叔母さんの友達のEnriqueが来て台所を使ってたやん？

Hana：　英語は不自由なく話せた？

Ana：　全然。でも楽しかった。やっぱり英語を話せるようになりたいなぁ、って思ってん。

Hana：　夏の留学の道は閉ざされたん？

Ana：　まだ完璧には閉ざされてへん。

Hana：　行くと決めたなら協力するで。

Hana: The divorce rate in Japan is getting higher. Did you know 1 in 3 couples ends in divorce?

Ana: Bite me! I know what you’re doing.

Ana: Do you remember when your friend, Enrique, came here to use your kitchen?

Hana: Uh-huh. Were you able to talk to him in English without any problem?

Ana: Not at all, I wanna be able to, though. It was fun talking to him.

Hana: Has the door been closed for studying abroad this summer?

Ana: Not yet.

Hana: If you decide to go, which I think you should, I’ll help you with everything.

Ana：　おばさんに失礼にならないように言ってん。

Hana：　失礼やと思うけどなぁ。

Ana：　ほんまのことを言うと、叔母さんって、コンサートに行くと妙に体を揺らして恥ずかしいねん。

Hana：　リ��ムに合わせて体が動くってことやろ。

Ana：　ん～どうでも良いけど、お誘いは断るわ。

Hana: So, I have 2 tickets to a Jazz concert. Do you wanna go with me?

Ana: I’ll take a rain check on that.

Hana: You don’t even know when it is.

Ana: I was being polite.

Hana: That was being polite?

Ana: I mean, the real reason is that you kind of move your body side to side at a concert. It’s weird and embarrassing.

Hana: You mean the way I sway to the music.

Ana: Whatever. I decline your invitation.

Tae：　そう言えば、Anaちゃんの婚約者とSakoさんの前の夫は会ったの？

Hana：　実はこの前、5人で会ってん。なんでか知らんけど私も呼ばれてん。

Tae：　穏やかにことは進んだの？

Hana：　デザートの時に私がお手洗いに行ってる間に大変なことになってん。

Tae：　怖いけど、何があったか知りたい。

Hana：　お姉ちゃんが前の旦那さんに「もう、消えてくれる。死んでもらってかまへんし」って。

Tae：　え～！？

Hana：　そしたら前夫が「ついにそんな事を言う喧嘩になったか。お前の正体がばれたな。」って冷静に言うねん。それはそれでめっちゃ怖かったわ。

Tae：　で、その後はどうなったの？

Hana：　どうもこうもそれで食事会は終わりよ。

Tae: Has Sako’s ex-husband seen Ana’s fiancé?

Hana: I don’t know why I was called in, but 5 of us had dinner the other night.

Tae: Did everything go smoothly?

Hana: Well, things had gotten a little out of hand while I was in the ladies room during dessert.

Tae: I’m scared to know but what happened?

Hana: Sako said to her ex “I wish you would disappear from Earth. You know what, I really wish you would die.”

Tae: Geez.

Hana: Then he quietly and calmly said “I guess the gloves are off now. Everyone here can see who you truly are.” His calmness scared the crap outta me.

Tae: Then what happened?

Hana: Nothing. That was the end of the dinner.

Hana：　バイトしいひん？

Hana：　あやしくないで。友達のEnriqueが何時になるかわからへんけど、ここのキッチンを使わして欲しいって言ってるねん。

Ana：　おばさんが居ればいいやん？

Hana：　その日は仕事でずっと大阪やねん。

Ana：　ほんまにそれだけで￥８,000くれるの？

Hana: Do you wanna make a quick buck?

Ana: Doing what?

Hana: Be here the day after tomorrow at 4:00pm and stay till the evening. I’ll give you \8,000 for just doing that.

Hana: No catch whatsoever. My friend, Enrique, is coming here and wants to use the kitchen. He doesn’t know exactly what time he’ll arrive here.

Ana: Why can’t you do it?

Hana: I have to work all day in Osaka.

Ana: Are you sure I can have \8,000 for just being here?

Hana: Yes! That’s what I’m offering.

Hana: I don’t wanna jump the gun because I haven’t really figured out my next move, yet.

Tae：　それはもしかして、よりを戻したいとか？

Hana：　わからへんけど、15年も前の話やし、それはないと思うけどな・・・。結婚もして子供もいるはずやし。

Tae：　彼のFacebookページを見よう！

Hana：　あかんあかん！　何��憶測もない状態で会いたいから、やめとく！

Tae：　Ok.　HanaがそうしたいならOk.

Hana: It was totally out of the blue, but my old boyfriend sent me an e-mail yesterday.

Tae: Why?

Hana: He just said that he wanted to see me because he’s coming to Kyoto.

Tae: Do I detect some romance on his part?

Hana: I don’t know. It’s been 15 years, so, no? Besides I think he’s married and got kids.

Hana: No, no! I don’t want to assume anything before I see the man.

Tae: All right, suit yourself.

Tae：　圧勝？

Hana：　お姉ちゃんがAnaの婚約に関してもう何もするな、って言うから、婚約に関してもう何も言わない、って言ってん。

Tae：　それが圧勝なの？

Hana：　Anaの留学��関しては何をしても良いってことよ！　細かいところにこだわらなあかんねん。

Tae：　じゃあ、まだAnaちゃんの件は未解決なんだ。

Hana：　お姉ちゃんは解決済みと思ってるけどな！

Tae: So, your sister came over to talk to you? How did that test go? Talking to her is usually a challenge.

Hana: I passed with flying colors.

Tae: What do you mean?

Hana: Well, Sako told me not to do anything about Ana’s engagement, so I said I wouldn’t.

Tae: How does that make you pass with flying colors?

Hana: You see, she didn’t say anything about Ana’s studying abroad, only about her engagement, which means I can still convince Ana to go to Arizona. The devil is in the details, Tae.

Tae: So, I guess the matter is not closed.

Hana: No, but Sako thinks it is.

Sako：（怒った調子で）Hana、ちょっと話があるねんけど。

Hana：　オッケー。

Sako：　Anaの婚約に関して、もう口出ししんといて！

Hana：　わかった。婚約に関して口出ししんとくわ。

Sako：　ほんまなん？　私は真剣やで。

Hana：　わかったって言ってるやん。

Sako：　なんや。喧嘩まんまんで来たのに、肩透かしやわ。

Hana：　どっかご飯食べに行く？

Sako: Hana, I have a bone to pick with you!

Hana: Okay.

Sako: Do not interfere with or say or do anything about Ana’s engagement anymore.

Hana: Okay. I won’t say or do anything about Ana’s engagement anymore.

Sako: I mean it, Hana. I’m dead serious about this.

Hana: I said okay I won’t.

Sako: Oh, really? This is kind of disappointing and unexpected. I came here thinking we’d have a heated argument.

Hana: So, do you wanna grab something to eat?

Hana：　今日はさぁ、2人に知恵をかしてもらおうと思って。

Tae：　Anaちゃんのことでしょ？

Hana：　もちろん。

Koji：　聞いてますよ。留学、彼のためにやめたとか？

Hana：　まだ決定はしてないねん。

Tae：　Koji君がAnaの婚約者だったら、どうする？

Koji：　難しいですよね。でも彼女がしたい事ならサポートするかな。それにたった３カ月でしょ？

Hana：　さすがKoji君！　今からAnaがここに来るから、よろしくなっ。私とTaeはとなりの立ち飲み屋にいるから。

Hana: I would like to pick your brains for a minute, today.

Tae: Let me guess. It’s about Ana.

Hana: What else would it be?

Koji: Tae told me about it. Ana is not going to study abroad for him, right?

Hana: It’s not finalized, yet. I don’t think.

Tae: What would you do if you were Ana’s fiancé?

Koji: It’s a difficult decision, but I suppose I would probably let her go if that’s what she wanted. Besides, it’s only 3 months, right?

Hana: I knew I could always count on you, Koji. A fantastic answer! Ana is gonna be here shortly, so talk to her. Tae and I will be at the standing bar next to the apartment. Okay? See you soon.

Episode 12: get off on the wrong foot　出だしをあやまる

Tae: 39 year-old female

Ana: 20 year-old female, Hana’s niece

Koji: 35 year-old male

Hana：　AnaとAnaの婚約者と一緒に夕ご飯食べに行ってん。

Tae：　どうしたん？　心変わりでもしたの？

Hana：　私も色々と考えて、もしかしたらお互い出ばなを折られたんかな～、もしかしたら初めから色眼鏡で見てたんかな～と思って。

Tae：　冷静になったんだぁ。で？

Hana：　あかんかったわ。やっぱり、すかんわ。

Tae：　また何か企んでるの？

Hana：　まだわからへんわ。

Hana: So, I went out for dinner, the other day, with Ana and her fiancé.

Tae: Wow. You changed your mind about the whole thing?

Hana: I’ve given some serious thought about it and thought, maybe, we got off on the wrong foot. I mean, I thought, maybe, I’d prejudged him before I even met him.

Tae: You finally calmed yourself down. And?

Hana: Turned out, he was exactly who I thought he would be. I just don’t like the guy.

Tae: And, is something brewing in your head to destroy Ana’s happiness?

Hana: I can’t say … yet.

Episode 11: have my back 味方についてサポートをする

Koji：　上司からさんざんな目に遭いましたよ。

Hana：　どうしたん？

Koji：　いつも僕の上司って、既存のものに囚われずに色々と挑戦したら良い、何かあったら自分が何とかするからって言ってくれるんですよね。

Hana：　ケミカルエンジニアに取ったら良い環境やん。

Koji：　でも今日、上司の上司が工場見学に来てて、僕が取り組んでた材料を見て、あんまり良い顔をしなかったんですよね。

Hana：　それで？

Koji：　ここぞって時に僕の上司、自分の言葉を裏切って全部僕のせいにしたんですよね。

Hana：　人ってほんま、わからんよなぁ。

Koji: I had a really shitty day because of my boss.

Hana: Oh?

Koji: My boss always tells me that I should try new things and be creative, and that whatever happens, he’s got my back.

Hana: That’s a great working environment for chemical engineers.

Koji: But then, my boss’s boss came to the factory today, and found some “creative” materials I was working on. I could tell he was not very happy about his findings.

Hana: And?

Koji: When push came to the shove, my boss threw me under the bus when his boss got angry and blamed it all on me.

Hana: People don’t stick to their words, I guess.

Episode １０：a heads-up 告知／前もっての情報

Enrique：　お目にかかれて良かったです。

Tae：　こちらこそ。それじゃあ、また。

Enrique：　バイバイ。

Hana：　バイバイ、また連絡するわ。

（Enriqueが帰った後）

Tae：　ちょっと、言ってくれたら良かったのに。

Hana：　何を？

Tae：　あんなハンサムな男の人がここに居るって知ってたら、もうちょっとましな格好して来たのに。

Hana：　Enriqueとは10年以上も友達やから彼の男前さを忘れてたわ。

Tae：　あんな顔と体やったら、私、ピチピチのTシャツ着て毎晩遊びに出るな～。

Enrique: It was great to meet you.

Tae: Yeah, you, too. Well, have a nice night.

Enrique: You, too. See you later.

Hana: Yeah, I’ll call you.

(After Enrique has gone home)

Tae: A heads-up would have been nice.

Hana: What are you talking about?

Tae: If I had known such a fine Greek statue was gonna be here, I would have worn better clothes.

Hana: I’ve known him for more than 10 years. I guess I don’t notice the fine Greek statue in him anymore.

Tae: If I had a face and body like his, I would wear a really tight T-shirt and go clubbing every day.

Episode ９：give the cold shoulder わざと冷たく接したり、無視する

Ana: 20 year-old female, Hana’s niece

Koji: 35 year-old male

Tae：　みんな帰ったよ。何があったん？　何であんな態度してたの？

Hana：　何のこと？

Tae：　明らかにAnaちゃんを無視してたよね。

Hana：　だって、Anaがアリゾナ行きをやめるって言いだすから・・・。

Tae：　彼が反対してるからやん。

Hana：　とは認めないけど、絶対そうやで。

Tae：　で、無視したらAnaちゃんが気持ちを変えるとでも思ったの？

Hana：　ノーコメント。

Tae: Okay, everybody’s gone. So, what happened? Why were you being like that?

Hana: Like what?

Tae: You were clearly giving Ana the cold shoulder. Why?

Hana: You heard her, too. She’s not going to Arizona.

Tae: Because he doesn’t want her to.

Hana: She doesn’t admit that that’s the reason, but everybody knows that’s why.

Tae: And you sophisticatedly thought your ignoring her would make her change her mind?

Hana: No comment.

Episode ８：head over heels (in love) 好きで好きでたまらない様子

Koji: 35 year-old male

Hana：　Anaの結婚にどうやら暗雲が立ち込めてそうやねん。

Tae：　え～そうなの？　あの二人はアツアツだと思ってたのに。

Hana：　若気のいたりよ。笑顔がとまらへんわ。

Tae：　何があったの？

Hana：Anaの短期留学に彼があんまり賛成してないみたいで。

Tae：　それは理解してあげないとね。

Hana：　これで私の心配も1つへりそう。ははは～！

Hana: It seems there are dark clouds looming on the engagement horizon.

Tae: Whaaat!? I thought they were head over heels for each other.

Hana: Nah, they are just young and stupid. I can’t stop smiling over this.

Tae: What exactly happened?

Hana: Apparently, Ana’s fiancé is not too keen on her studying abroad.

Tae: Well, he should let her go.

Hana: I think I have one less thing to worry about in my life. Hehe.

Episode 7: a skeleton in the closet 

（恥ずかしいので）他人に知られたくない秘密

Hana: 42 year-old female

Tae: 39 year-old female

Ana: 20 year-old female, Hana’s niece

Koji: 35 year-old male

Tae：　今朝、Kenの引き出しの中から何を見つけたと思う？

Hana：　人の部屋をのぞき回るのは良くないで。

Tae：　のぞき回ってないよ。ただ、・・・ハサミを探してただけ。

Hana：　元カノの写真。

Tae：　ちがうよ。なんか切った爪のカスみたいなのが小さい箱にぎっしりと詰まってたの。

Hana：　おえっ！　それは臭いかなりの秘密やなぁ。

Tae：　爪やってわかるまでにしばらく時間がかかったわ。

Hana：　この件は絶対Kenに尋いてな。

Tae: Guess what I found in a drawer in Ken’s apartment this morning?

Hana: Nothing good usually comes out of snooping around people’s place.

Tae: I wasn’t snooping around. I was just, ahhh, looking for scissors.

Hana: You found pictures of his ex girlfriends?

Tae: No. I found a small container full of, what it seems to be, clipped nails.

Hana: Eww, that is one hell of a strange smelly skeleton in the closet.

Tae: It took me a while to figure out they were clipped nails.

Hana: You’re gonna have to ask him and then tell me all about it.
