at first i was surprised there was a thriving Real Life Polar Exploration fandom but now that im diving into it it makes perfect sense. it’s like a god damn cinematic universe. there’s voyages that last for years that force the members of it to really engage and interact with each other, multiple expeditions have repeat/overlapping characters, and they love and hate each other and they have clearly defined goals and ambitions and some of them die tragic ass deaths and some of them reach fame and glory and some of them get thrown in prison for general sheistery and make doilies for the man they had a suspiciously strong emotional bond with twenty years prior stuck on a ship in the antarctic. it makes perfect sense
