“Roughly three-and-a-half seconds, so you can feel free to calm down,” Maxwell told the girl flatly. He didn’t recognize her-- though that was unsurprising. Sometimes students ended up in his classes who he thought were new but it turned out they’d been at the school for years. Oops. He gave her an appraising look. “What are you doing?”
a deep startle left her as the other approached. she hadn’t seen them coming, hadn’t heard them come in, now she was face to face with them. perhaps it was ella’s own obliviousness that was the cause. either way, she still felt her heart pulsing from the ache of the surprise. “how long have you been there?” she asked, bit breathless. @arcanasstarters

The only reason Maxwell was even here this late was because he’d left his wallet in his desk drawer and hadn’t realized until he’d gotten home and tried to order-in some food for supper. It’d been an annoying trek back to the school, to say the least. But while there, he couldn’t help but peep curiously around the door of one of the offices whose light was still on. "Teach me how to restrain myself from strangling students in the first week of the term?” he replied dryly, leaning up against the doorframe of the other professor’s office. Fletch, after all, was a good teacher. Enjoyed it, even. What that must be like, Maxwell had no idea. “Why are you here so late, anyway? Go home. Honestly.”
It was well into the evening when Fletch found himself still working late in his office. It had become something of a routine to get lost in his work, planning away for the next day of classses. He heard the creak of the door as his gaze remained on his work. ❛ How can I be of service? ❜ He questioned, finally reverting his eyes from his desk up to the approaching individual.

( hale appleman, 33, he/him ) class is in session for MAXWELL GRAY. their resume says they’re a WITCH and they’ve been teaching SPIRIT MAGIC at the academy for FOUR YEARS. the psychological report says they are SHORT-TEMPERED and PESSIMISTIC, but they’re also LIVELY and FOCUSED. we wish them good luck in the new school year.
hey hey hey! i’m tara & i’m literally so happy i happened to stumble across the main again BY CHANCE and see that this was re-opening?? it was my absolute favorite and i’m beaming to be back again because i adore playing maxwell.
**also, someone tell me how to turn off this horrific dash change? like, why is the font strange and weird? how do I fix it???** EDIT: IT’S FIXED, HALLELUJAH ETC
i’m being lazy and essentially tweaking maxwell’s previous intro, so, here you go:
maxwell’s mother was one of the previous instructors of spirit magic at arcanas, and his grandfather before her. it’s not really an inherited teaching position so much as-- their family is just naturally good at it, apparently.
he never knew his father (his mother never mentioned him) and he doesn’t have siblings, so he makes up for his lack of familial connections by getting to know everyone’s business. he’s a social butterfly, though without the bubbliness that usually attends it.
because his mother taught at arcanas, he essentially grew up on the grounds of the school even from the time he was a toddler, since she was the headmaster of halitus house. he attended arcanas as a member of that house as well, with a primary air affinity.
when he graduated, he moved across the atlantic to do magic-for-hire for wealthy folks in london who needed a boost from spirit magic for their own spells. he has always been highly driven, so that opportunity was a good one-- though the magic that he involved himself with there was more-than morally gray and a bit darker than perhaps what he’d intended to get into. he met a lot of sketchy individuals. it was a questionable time period in his life and he was an accomplice to some magical activity that he definitely regretted.
so after about four years of that, he decided to attend a magic university training program to become a teacher. because what else was he going to do? true, he didn’t exactly like “the youths,” but it would at least be an improvement from his previous job, maybe. things were great, for a while; he became a better witch at university with a slightly less skewed moral compass and also discovered his secondary moon magic affinity. his mother was even looking forward to teaching alongside him. then, because fate is cruel-- just as he was about to graduate, whoops, she died as an unfortunate result of trying to cast a too-powerful spell, and he ended up taking her teaching position. it was all horribly ironic.
turns out that teaching is not much more enjoyable than his previous job, and he considers quitting every other tuesday.
personality-wise, he’s outspoken (no one would ever claim him to be shy), he can often be impatient, and he has an extraordinarily low tolerance for bullshit, so he’s not exactly the most “touchy-feely” teacher. but on the pro-side, he pushes his students to succeed (if they put in the effort to do so) and he is creative enough to help them conquer roadblocks of various kinds. even if he makes them cry along the way.
non-magic wise: he definitely lives off-campus. he loves a good bingeable netflix show. he’d rather die than exercise voluntarily. even though he’s a master cocktail-mixer, he can’t cook to save his life, so his meals are typically 100% take-out. he always dresses for success, and if given the opportunity, he’ll take karaoke way too seriously. actually, he takes most things way too seriously. maxwell “intensity” gray.
tldr: maxwell’s a witch with air and moon attunements; he teaches spirit magic; he cares, though he pretends he doesn’t; he’s a Lot.
would love to plot with anyone and everyone. I have to go to “work” (from home) this afternoon but I’ll be around after that. xx
