fuck me for thinking we were past this kind of behaviour as a fandom

So it looks like sour-apple-studios is stepping back from creating. Bullying a real human being over 'problematic' depictions of (not real!) characters... in an AU about murder and torture and cannibalism. Makes sense!!!

I've been in this fandom for a decade. It's absolutely fine to dislike a ship. It's absolutely fine to dislike a person because they ship something you don't like. Block whoever you like! Block wherever you like! Your future is yours to command.

But - and it's a big butt - issues always arise when you start to demand for the outright banning of certain subjects/depictions. It's a slippery slope toward right-wing thinking. Do you know who also outright bans the depictions of things they don't like, for the sake of 'protecting' certain groups? It's not the good guys.

Banning difficult subjects is EXTREMELY hard to do delicately. It's common knowledge that people who've experienced a lot of distress often find peace in creating disturbing art. When you ban people from creating around certain subjects, you inevitably accidentally target those who are most vulnerable.

I'm not a proshipper. But I'm also not an anti, either. Because I find it really weird and reductive to boil everyone down to 2 super strict boxes. I believe that, whether or not I like it or understand it, people should be free to create whatever they want.

Who decides what is and isn't 'bad'? Who decides what is and isn't 'allowed'? I don't know what's going on in someone's head. I'm not morally infallible. I'm not the arbiter of all that is/isn't 'good' in the world. And clearly, if you're bullying a real human being over fictional characters, neither are you.

So if proshippers arent also people who believe that people should be free to create whatever they want then what are they? What do proshippers believe if it's not that?

I get really icky about insistently putting people into two strictly defined groups. It makes it so easy to create an us/them dynamic that allows the kind of behaviour we've been seeing recently.

"All antis are evil puritans who want to set ao3 on fire" "all proshippers are nasty disgusting monsters" we're all people. Sensitive human beings, all here because we love fandom and creating.

They're just words, anon. Made up words. I'm sure there's self-proclaimed 'proshippers' who are genuinely terrible people, and self-proclaimed 'antis' who are horrified by the prospect of harassing someone. Because these terms are just as flawed and open-ended as the people who came up with them.

I consider myself something of a Word Expert. My two cents? There's no need to twist into knots to try and fit into terms coined by total strangers on the internet.

creator of uf just condemned sour... as did jael with vague posting on twitter... why does it feel like the big wigs are sellouts just to keep their popularity? Why does it feel like they don't care about people?? I'm glad people like you exist...

I feel for them. It’s hard being in the limelight, and getting harassed by thousands of people for your response to a situation or trying to use you to further feed the fire and hurt you as well isn’t easy. But they themselves are adding to the fire.

They unintentionally made it about themselves by posting anything involved with the situation. I’m sure they have dark secrets they hide from the public, knowing if their ‘fans’ find out they’ll be in the same situation as Sour. But instantly publicly chucking Sour under the bus to further prove that, yeah they’re safe!!! To the face eating leopards won’t save their faces when the mob comes for them too.

Also just?? Block the assholes, just do it, block anything and anyone that makes you uncomfortable and move on.

And they’re not only chucking Sour under the bus but also a lot of their long time fans who are just chilling. The reason I am so public with making sure people know they’re welcome here no matter what they ship is because of it.

I’ve become protective of myself and our little corner because I want you to know that your fictional tastes don’t matter to me, your actions do.

(Especially for a fandom for a game created by a guy who wrote, “the baby is you” in response to a similar situation happening a decade ago, imagine going to a forest and complaining that there’s bugs like there sure is bugs in a forest you should wear bug repellent not try to chop down the trees 😂)
