Can You Get Analytic Paralysis?
Tumblr media
In short, the answer is yes. You can, in fact, suffer from analytics paralysis. Many site owners do, as a matter of fact. It occurs when an individual becomes so lost in the process of analyzing data that they can’t make a decision. They are essentially frozen in the numbers. This is a problem is because it is a valuable waste of time and resources. It also prohibits those in authoritative roles from making decisions that will benefit the company. They are too busy examining and evaluating all the different data factors at their disposal. This evaluation process consumes them and prohibits them from making any decision at all. This leaves every department essentially stuck in a holding pattern and most likely losing money.
What Causes Analytics Paralysis?
Analytics paralysis can occur with relatively minor as well as complex situations. It can also occur within any industry. The individual attempts to examine and evaluate every single detail in great depth. This typically occurs when someone is unsure of the best practices. For site owners, they become obsessed with all metrics. There are only a handful of metrics that provide actionable information. Unfortunately, someone suffering from analytics paralysis groups these metrics in with all the other insignificant data. They end up scouring data reports for hours, unsure of how to apply the knowledge the are obtaining. They fail to differentiate significant data from that which is irrelevant. This uncertainty freezes them in their tracks and they do nothing at all. They have a fear of failing which replaces the confidence of moving forward. Inevitably, they end up failing in an attempt to avoid it.
Diagnosing Analytics Paralysis
Analytics paralysis can be devastating to an individual and the company they operate. However, it does not require medication of complex software to treat. The first step toward overcoming a problem is recognizing that it exists. Someone with a deep fear of failing which prohibits them from making decisions may be suffering from analytics paralysis. If someone is overwhelmed by all the available options, that’s another sign. Stalling to avoid a decision is another sure sign. Those who over complicate seemingly simple decisions could also be suffering. Analytics paralysis negatively impacts the bottom line, but you can move past it.
What To Do
Now that you know what’s going on, you can take corrective measures. First, do some research. Find out which metrics are vanity metrics. Eliminate them and do not look at them again. The only analytics that matter are the ones that you can act on. Next, set a hard time line for a decision and stick to it. It is also important to strive for improvement, not perfection. Perfection should never be the goal but there is always room for improvement. Lastly, delegate someone to help you make decisions. You can bounce ideas off each other and talk through potential changes. This will also help keep you accountable to your timeline. They may find that you are still including unactionable analytics. Having a partner makes the decision-making process easier. It also holds you accountable and helps you overcome the analytics paralysis.
