Hardcore action in the pit at the 1st outdoor Eastern Front punk rock festival, Aquatic Park, Berkeley Marina, in 1981, as captured by Stephen L. Harlow -note Jello Biafra in aviator shades and blue tee in the 2nd pic because “The best thing about Biafra was that he was a fan”, to quote the photographer.

“I was in the pit for two bands - Flipper & DOA., shot 3 rolls of color slide film at 400 ASA. A slightly wide-angle, 30mm, lens, these guys fell on top of me. I had my brand new Contax, I was hunched over, knees bent to keep a low center of gravity, protecting my camera by holding it with both hands in my stomach, I had guys going over me and slamming me into other guys. It took all my mosh expertise. It was very much fun.”
