SP #9
1) The best part about this class are definitely the class meetings. It feels the closest to a physical class environment because we not only interact with the teacher, but we interact with other students as well. With most of my other classes, it’s a very one-sided lecture, where only the teacher is seen and heard, unlike introductory studio.
2) One part about this class that I didn’t like as much was my hesitance in speaking. I have a pet peeve about people interrupting me and me interrupting people while we speak, so because I was afraid of interrupting people or talking over them, I rarely spoke.
3) For winter break I want to explore subject matters that I tend to avoid or I have difficulty drawing, such as the human body and architecture.
4) In 2021, I want to develop a tattoo portfolio in case I don’t get into med school and therefore would have to drop out, so then I at least have a backup plan.
5) I’ve already planned out how I will go about developing this portfolio. Just like the art world, in the world of tattooing there are different styles, and I want to be a versatile artist, so I’m going to reference different styles of tattooing and implement those styles into my own ideas.

skate a little and drop

I’m going through a mid-life crisis at 18, and that’s because I can’t decide whether or not I’m making the right decisions. On one hand, I want to pursue medical school and earn a high and stable financial income, but I think I’ve either become dumber or less ambitious ever since starting college and I’m starting to worry I won’t be able to get into a med school. On the other hand, I want to drop out and pursue filmmaking, which is my dream job, but the entertainment industry is so oversaturated that it would be hard for me to stand out, let alone be successful in. I wish I was having fun and I wish I was sure of myself. I really don’t know anything at this point, honestly.

The Wall
I remember reading this story about people on either side of the border using the wall as a volleyball net, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a performance piece, it was just a natural occurrence between people on different sides of the wall coming together to enjoy a game of volleyball which is beautiful in its own way.  It reminds me of another story about World War II, where German and British soldiers had a temporary ceasefire during Christmas to play football.
I would love to see another version or a replication of that where people are encouraged to participate in an activity where they no longer see the wall as this imposing device created to divide, even though that is the intention of its design. The people on either side can engage in a competitive game that’s fun and light-hearted, which will remind them that the people on the other side aren’t enemies, they have friends and families and life goals just like any of the rest of us, they just so happen to be on the other side.

If I were to create the ideal version of myself, I would want a version that is a complete nobody because I wouldn’t have an identity or reputation holding me back from doing whatever I want. That is why the traits I’ve listed are all contradictory with the exception of number 13. My alter ego is meant to be observed from a distance, which makes it hard for an observer to see any traits, and I’m wearing baggy clothes to conceal as many traits as I could as well.

"The Artist is Present"
I remember reading about Rhythm 0 a while ago, but I never knew the title nor’ did i know it was Marina who performed it. Rhythm 0 is the first, and so far the only, performance art piece that has changed my opinion on performance art. To be honest, I still don’t understand most of it and I still don’t like most of it, but Rhythm 0, to date, is still the most intriguing and thought-provoking art piece to me. I don’t know if Marina would appreciate it being called an “experiment,” but that’s what I’ve thought of it. She gathers strangers to test what they would do to a person completely vulnerable and submissive and through art she reveals how depraved and cruel people could be. A fight broke out after someone pointed a gun to her head, and that shows how much influence her performance, her doing nothing and letting the audience do anything, had.
I do not understand how she could allow herself to experience so much pain for the sake of art. When they showed her old performances with Ulay, I cringed during the performances where they inflict bodily harm onto one another, like when they were constantly slapping each other, not lightly either, and especially when they were running into one another. The sound of their bodies colliding and then watching Marina fall and no one helps her up made me very confused, because as Ulay said, they were both black and blue afterwards. I don’t understand how they, especially Marina, who of course is smaller than Ulay, could handle the pain and continuously allow it.
Marina’s performances astound me in the fact that they are so depraved of any human comfort. From the inflicting pain onto herself to sitting still for long periods of time for months, those all require such a high level of discipline to maintain. Her performances make me uncomfortable, and I guess that’s the point, usually.
In one of Marina’s speeches, she repeats “do not fall in love with another artist,” and I didn’t expect any emphasis on romance in the documentary, but then Ulay showed up. I still don’t understand why she suggests avoiding falling in love with another artist though. She mentioned infidelity occurred, but Ulay said both parties were disloyal, and to be honest I don’t know who to believe. Even then, I don’t think infidelity was the nail in the coffin of their relationship, especially since they still have a good relationship. Marina said as they continued to perform with one another, differences between their interests grew, but is that not natural in any other relationship, no matter who you’re with? Growing apart happens, and losing interest is what occurs naturally after a while. I wonder if it’s because of their past that they still have such a good relationship. Despite the infidelity, maybe the pain they experienced together is the reason why they appear to be on good terms with one another.
Despite seeing so much nudity already, I was shocked by the girl undressing before she sat in front of Marina, and I was even more shocked that she was escorted away. Marina’s done so many shocking things in her lifetime and I thought the girl was just paying tribute, she’s not hurting anyone.

The wearable sculpture is my take on fast fashion. I tried to use as little resources outside of the scissors and the chip bag itself, but I had to use some hot glue to keep everything from pulling apart. I used that specific brand of chips because it was all I had around, and I like uniformity so I tried to use the bag as much as I could, such as making them into straps, and into “string” to hold all the components of the top together. Fast fashion is so accessible to us, but it’s also detrimental us as well since it’s wearing away our environment. I think materialism is so ingrained in American culture, and when we feed into entities or trends that promote materialism, such as fast fashion, it’s detrimental to how people start viewing themselves and their environments. People start becoming entitled to have whatever the environment has to offer. It’s gluttonous. People can’t stop to think “do i really need this” and companies can’t stop producing or else they’ll lose money, and neither care about how it affects the environment.

I went with a storyboard approach as my response to the growing use of automation by companies and the gradual replacement of the blue-collar workforce with automation. I’ve found two articles from NPR and The New York Times describing the political aspect of how the government’s allowed automation to go so far into the work force and how it will affect jobs in the near future. I’ve never considered government involvement when it came to automation, it just seemed like an inevitable industrial development. Large companies would desire the most efficient and, long-term, inexpensive method of production and “robots” are the method large corporations are seeking, at the detriment of its human workforce. The government appears unable to adapt to the needs of many people who are losing their jobs to technology that is developing at an exponential rate (Vigdor). Many people will be displaced, and seeing how poorly our government has reacted to a sudden pandemic, I am worried about how willing they would be to help against a more subtle tragedy affecting many (Selyukh). It is described as subtle because, to a certain extent, most people are not actively fighting or protesting against the use of automation because they like it. Companies like Amazon are relying more on technology each day, and it benefits those who use Amazon. Orders are shipped quicker and it’s easy to find what we want on Amazon as opposed to shopping in person. However, feeding into use of automation also feeds its growth, which eventually could be so advanced that it replaces more and more people.
I showed my friends the images I drew, and they all collectively agreed it was a fever dream about a depressed businessman, so I think I owe an explanation of why I drew what I drew.
In the first panel, it’s, oddly, many white-collar workers being displaced, unlike the blue-collar labor we see more often being replaced, and I chose to focus on white-collar workers is because it’s often believed they’re irreplaceable, and for the most part, currently they are irreplaceable compared to blue-collar workers, but it’s not impossible, especially taking into consideration how fast technology advances.
In the second panel, one of the white-collar workers finds his lover in the arms of technology. I didn’t know how to portray technology without it being obvious or cliche, so I gave the “robot” a blank slate, because oftentimes technology can be whatever we want it to be. The man and his lover really are not opposing figures, they both love and use technology as much as the other, it’s just one is being replaced by it.
The third panel shows the man walking by many homeless people, who the government does not care about, while simultaneously shoving materialistic products into everybody’s faces because it stimulates the economy of the wealthy.
The fourth panel shows the man, without a job and without a source of income because the government doesn’t provide enough of it, and so he just does what a man without motivation or dreams does, stare at the sky.
It’s just an allegory of what the potential future looks like for a middle-class citizen if the government continues to let automation push away jobs for people and decide not to compensate for those who are unable to find a job because the government has allowed corporations to cast aside the human workforce so suddenly in favor of technology. It’s fine if technology does eventually replace the human workforce, but without money or a way to pay off basic necessities is inhuman, especially when it’s not the fault of the average citizen that they lose their jobs to automation.

My breath smells bad. I squeeze toothpaste onto my toothbrush. I scrub it up and down, around, on top, and behind my teeth for longer than necessary because I'm ao tired that I don't have a concept of time yet. I just know I need to brush my teeth. I also brush my tongue, which is the source of the bad smell, but it's kinda hard cause I gag easily. When I brush my teeth, I start coming to my senses. The scraping sound wakes me up further and I eventually realize I need to stop. So I stop brushing. I spit out the minty hunk of salva I've developed and rinse my mouth to get rid of any residual toothpaste.
