Clark had barely stepped into the apartment before he launched into one of his rambling debriefs of the day. Glasses slipping down his nose, tie loosened, jacket discarded across the back of your couch, he looked more boyish than the man who’d just spent hours being Superman and Clark Kent all in one.
“…and then Perry nearly had a meltdown because Jimmy misplaced some pictures—oh, and Lois nearly got herself arrested again, you should’ve seen—”
You weren’t listening. Not really. Your eyes trailed over the curve of his mouth as he talked, soft lips moving quickly with that earnest excitement of his. You moved closer, leaned in, and pressed a quick kiss against his mouth.
Clark blinked, his sentence skipping for half a beat. But then he smiled faintly and continued as if nothing happened. “…anyway, we found another Kaiju. I convinced Guy to not obliterate his eyes once more. Nothing I couldn’t handle. Although—”
Another kiss. This one lingered, brushing over him slowly until his voice faltered again.
“You really don’t want me finishing this story, do you?” He murmured, though his tone was still warm, still teasing.
You kissed him again, harder this time, sliding your hands up into his dark hair. He made a low sound in his chest, still trying to mumble something about a deadline until your lips moved deliberately against his in a kiss that made his shoulders stiffen and his breath catch.
That did it. His rambling trailed off completely.
Clark’s hands went to your waist, tugging you closer until you were practically in his lap. He leaned back against the couch cushions, letting you climb over him as though this had been his plan all along. His glasses shifted askew, and for once, he didn’t care.
“You’re—” he tried again, but you swallowed the word with another kiss, deeper this time, tasting the faint hint of bitter coffee still clinging to him. His lips pressed back harder, hungrier now, answering you with a low, heated growl that vibrated against your mouth.
Your fingers tugged at his tie, loosening it fully until it hung useless around his neck. He laughed softly into the kiss, the sound cut short when you kissed him again, open-mouthed and slow enough to make him groan.
Clark pulled back just enough to look at you, pupils blown wide behind his crooked glasses. “You’re going to be the death of me,” he whispered, voice rougher than before.
You smirked, brushing your lips along his jaw, down to his throat. “You’ll survive.”
His head tilted back, breath stuttering when your mouth lingered at the sensitive spot just under his ear. His grip tightened at your hips, and then suddenly he was flipping you—careful, but quick—so you were lying against the couch cushions with him braced above you.
The kiss that followed was messy, all teeth and tongue and desperation, like he’d been holding himself back all evening and finally let go. You tugged him closer, your legs curling around his waist as he kissed you like he couldn’t stand a single inch between you.
When you finally broke for air, his chest was heaving like he’d just flown halfway across the world. His lips were pink, kiss-swollen, and his glasses were hanging crooked at the edge of his nose until he finally gave up and tugged them off, tossing them blindly onto the coffee table.
Neither of you spoke at first. There was nothing to say—only the silent agreement that words could wait. With a wicked grin tugging at your lips, you pulled him down again, kissing him until the world outside disappeared, leaving only the heat of his body pressed to yours and the dizzying rush of his mouth moving against yours.
When he finally tore himself away, forehead pressed to yours, Clark’s laugh came out low and breathless. “You know,” he panted, lips brushing yours with every word, “I was trying to tell you about my day.”
You smirked, thumb brushing over his jaw. “I like this better.”
He chuckled, kissing you once more, softer this time. “Guess I’ll just have to file the full report for later… though between you and Perry, I think I prefer your interruptions.”
And with that, he silenced himself again, kissing you like he had no intention of ever finishing the story.

how you get the girl
Tumblr media
summary - you and clark didn’t work because long distance was never an ideal, but now clark’s back and your heart still feels the same
pairing - ex!boyfriend-clark x reader
word count - ~2k
Tumblr media
The sun was high and it was a perfect day for the town market.
The cobbled main street was lined with plenty of stalls selling items like warm, fresh, bread and pots of homemade honey, but also handmade wooden crafts and trinkets.
Saturday was your favourite day of the week simply because you got to enjoy your small town market.
Your tote bag was filled with two loaves of bread already and now you were on the hunt for some cheese and chutney, in order to make a well earned sandwich.
You were busy looking at Clarissa’s crochet stall when you bumped into someone.
“So sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was– Clark?”
Clark pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose as he focused his gaze on you.
Wow, he looked good.
Presumably all the time he now spent in the City meant that he had access to good, but expensive, clothes and hairdressers. His hair did look ridiculously lovely.
“Y/N!” He beamed.
He immediately brought you in for a half-hug, his other hand held onto a cooler bag filled with something.
The flannel shirt he was wearing smelt exactly as you remembered and you allowed yourself to breathe in the familiar smell as he hugged you tight.
“It’s good to see you.” You pulled away from him, your heart sinking over the loss of contact.
“Yeah, and you.”
His smile brought you comfort - especially when that little dimple popped out.
“So what are you doing back? Just visiting family?”
“Uh, y-yeah. Sort of.” He nodded.
“Nice. I still see your folks every Thursday for dinner.” Your cheeks warmed over admitting that, but surely Clark already knew that.
“They love having you over. It’s Ma’s favourite time of the week.”
“Surely not this week, what with you being back.” You pushed his arm gently and he swayed back gently, even though in reality you knew that touch never should’ve moved him.
“I-I wouldn’t be so sure.” He laughed.
That laugh.
God.
You had missed that laugh and the sunshine of a human being that came with it.
Your heart still very much yearns for Clark. After all, he was the one that got away. Or maybe more accurately, you were the one who had to stay.
“What are you up to today?” He asked.
“Oh,” You looked from him, to your bread and back to him, “Just sandwich shopping.” You patted your bag.
“Cheese and chutney?”
“Yeah.” You laughed. Of course you were that predictable, or maybe Clark just had a good memory.
Clark smiled and nodded, looking down at his feet to hide the obvious blush forming on his cheeks.
“I was thinking about going down to the lake and maybe set up a picnic, if you want to join?” You offered.
Clark’s eyes shot straight back to yours.
“O-oh uh… I…”
“Sorry, I meant you don’t have—.”
“No!”
“What?”
“I mean, yes. Absolutely I’d love to join.”
“Okay.” You said with a laugh. “Good.”
“So are we off there now… Or?” Clark asked and you admired his eagerness.
“Now is good.” You nodded. “I just need to finish getting some stuff and also get us some drinks.”
“Right here.” Clark lifted his the cooler bag he had been carrying. It looked like it was filled to the brim.
“What’s the poison?”
“Ginger beer, dandelion and burdock or water.” He answered with the exact three options you thought he would offer.
“Okay. Well I’m going to grab some more stuff if you—.”
“I’ll come with you.” He offered before you could suggest anything else.
You were glad he was back.
However briefly.
Tumblr media
Clark was now carrying all the bags as you both trekked down the gravel path towards the lake.
He had assured you that he would be doing his Ma a disservice if he didn’t at least attempt to carry the bags - not that it broke any sweat off his back.
You knew from the past that Clark was letting you walk ahead of him so he could keep an eye on you.
The walk with Clark was comfortable and familiar.
He made you feel like before.
Having him back was filling up a pot of emptiness in your chest that you didn’t even realise existed. Clark had meant a lot to you - had been your first everything, really - so it was no surprise that he was making you feel this way.
“Oh look!” You abruptly stopped and Clark’s front bumped straight into your back. His hand quickly grabbed onto your hip so that neither of you would fall.
“What?”
“Rabbits.”
You had almost forgotten what you’d stopped for when his hand had touched you.
Even after all this time, his skin felt electric against yours.
“Wow.” You whispered, staring at the little bunnies that had stopped to graze on a patch of grass and wildflowers.
Clark didn’t rush or hurry you along and let you stare for as long as your heart contented. When you did finally move on and Clark’s hand moved off of you, you swore he dragged it out so he could touch you for as long as possible.
“Sure you don’t want me to carry something?”
“Ask me again and it’ll be you I’m carrying next.” He threatened, which actually didn’t sound unappealing in the slightest.
Tumblr media
The lake was quiet.
There were a couple of people around and playing in the water, but not as many people as you had thought there’d be.
You and Clark set up on part of the lake bank where there was a big oak tree.
It had been a compromise.
Clark loved the sun and bathed in it any moment he could get, whereas you were a shade girl through-and-through.
You weren’t so bothered about getting a tan like everyone else rushed to claim. You were quite content just catching the sun if you were out walking.
Clark had laid down on the checkered picnic blanket you had brought. His ankles were crossed and his arms were relaxed underneath his head.
You managed to watch him closely as his eyes were closed and taking in the sun. It honestly looked like he was absorbing the sunlight to store for later, which made you smile to yourself.
You were busy preparing the fresh sandwiches as he sunbathed.
The cheese was still a little cold, thanks to Clark’s convenient cooler, and the chutney had apparently been finished off fresh this morning according to Mrs Maple. You lathered more chutney on Clark’s than yours, knowing he liked his fillings in plenty.
You took out a can of ginger beer for yourself and a water for Clark.
“Here.” You offered him, placing the sandwich in front of him.
Clark opened his eyes and rolled onto his side, propping himself up with one arm so he could face you but still be laying down.
You would be lying if you said you didn’t pay attention (and in detail) to the way his bicep muscles moved as he lay like that.
“Thank you.” He said.
You ate in silence, Clark thanking you again for a lovely lunch every few bites. You both watched on as some kids were messing around in the water, probably playing their own version of mermaids.
“So where are you working now?” Clark asked, wiping his hands on a napkin.
“The library still.”
“You still love it there?”
“Yes.” You smiled genuinely.
“Good. That’s good.” Clark smiled back.
“And you? How’s the big City.”
“Ehh, it’s alright. Nothing like home.”
“Yeah, I bet.” You nodded along. Having never left your small town you could only imagine how different it was out here compared to where Clark is now.
There’s probably more to do and more to see. More opportunities, both in jobs and weekend activities. There’s also no doubt more people to meet and get to know.
That leads your thoughts to wondering whether Clark has met anyone new. Well of course he must have, but maybe someone special? Someone that’s his?
“I have more friends now, I suppose.” Clark said as if he could read your mind.
“That’s good.”
“Work colleagues, I mean, but I guess they are friends too.” He smiled off into the distance, probably thinking about them all. Or maybe just one.
“I know that smile.” You tried your best to remain smiley.
“W-what?” Clark fumbled.
“You’ve met someone.”
“I’ve met lots of someone’s.” He looked puzzled and if it weren’t for the fact you knew Clark too well, you would’ve thought his comment had meant something entirely different.
“I know, but maybe you’ve met someone special? A girlfriend, perhaps?” You raised an eyebrow.
“Pfft, oh. No. Definitely not.” He sat up defensively.
“Really?”
“Well… There is someone.”
He sat with his knees bent, arms resting on top of them in a clasp, facing you. You crossed your legs and put your sandwich down to listen to him.
“Oh really?” You swallowed the lump on your throat.
“Yeah, but not someone new.” His eyes stayed locked to yours.
“Oh.”
“And definitely not someone from the City.” He chewed on his lip after saying that.
Your heart quickened.
Was he talking about… you?
There weren’t many other people yours or Clark’s age, in your small town, that he knew. There was Betty, but she was too extroverted for Clark and had turned her died three times because she never got the hint.
“Clark…” You started slowly.
“I know.” He gave you defeated smile, tilting his head down to the picnic blanket rather than having to face you.
“I-I’m….”
Your eyes started to water and your heart felt like it was going to give out. Clark raised his head to look at you then, almost as if he could sense the change of your heartbeat.
“You don’t have to say anything.”
“No, I do.” You stressed, moving from your seated position and standing up so you could walk over to him.
He watched you carefully, checking the spot you were about to sit down in before you did.
You sat with your knees bent like his, resting your hands on top of one of hid arms because you were so close. Clark focused on where your hands met his skin, no doubt feeling the same electricity you were.
“Hey, look at me.” You tapped his arm to get him to look at you.
You felt at home when you looked at Clark.
You felt at home even sat beside him.
“You know how I feel about you Clark, but you also know why this would never work.”
He nodded, gulping back his own tears now.
“I miss you.” He admitted, lips wavering.
“I miss you too, but… I.. I can’t leave, Clark. I have to stay. You know that.” You kept your gaze closed on him, trying to figure out what he was thinking.
“And I can’t expect you to follow me.”
You shook your head because he was right.
“The City was your dream, Clark.”
“But it’s not anymore.” He burst out before he could let you say anything more.
“Clark…”
“It’s not!” He shouted, then blowing out a long, hard, breath. “It’s not.”
He tilted his head down and shut you out physically, but you wouldn’t let him shut you out completely.
“Talk to me.” You said softly, moving one hand from his arm to the back of his neck. You scrunched the hairs there and let yourself revel in the familiarity of it all.
“I don’t want the City dream anymore.” His head lifted to meet yours, “Not if it means I can’t have you.”
“Honey…”
The pet name slipped out before you even realised you were saying it.
“Whether you want me or not, I’m moving back. I’ve already bought a little plot of land just off Ma and Pa’s farm. Figured I’d build a house to keep me busy.” He chuckled to himself.
“With a wrap around porch?”
“Exactly the way we dreamed of.” He nodded.
“But what about—.”
“I don’t know and I don’t care. I just want you, Y/N. If you’d let me, I’d just want you.” He tilted his forehead against yours, breathing you in as if it would be his last.
You smiled to yourself, feeling brave.
Your heart had been waiting for him all this time and now he was right here there was no way you were letting him go again.
“I want you too.”
Clark nearly knocked you out as his head tilted up. His eyes shone as if all that energy from the sun was now passing through him.
“You do?” He grinned, moving a hand off his leg and cupping it against your cheek to feel the reality of the moment.
“Always have.”
“You have me. Always have and always will.”
Just as the warm air blew around you both, the scent of wildflowers being brought with it, Clark moved in and sealed his lips to yours.
Neither of you cared about being too quick, because you knew you’d have years of these moments to come. Years of these kisses too.
Clark kept the kiss tender. Sweet.
The kiss felt like the beginning of something.
He pulled back briefly just so he could look at you. His thumb softly brushing over the skin of your cheek, before moving back in.
You could feel his smile in the kiss and you couldn’t help but smile back, your lips parting as you both let out a breathy laugh.
You kissed him again.
And again.
Until he didn’t let you kiss him again because he knew you needed to catch your breath.
“I’ve missed that.” Clark chuckled.
“Me too.”
The distance between your faces was slight, but you hated the gap and wished for nothing more than to fill it with your kisses again.
“Can’t believe it worked.” He mumbled to himself.
“What worked?”
He chuckled, tilting his head up to the sky and then back to you.
“Ma. She knew how badly I wanted to try and get you back, so she suggested intentionally bumping into you at the market. She knows how you love them and in the summer how often you go to the lake afterwards. So she sent me on my way with a cooler full of drinks and a heart filled with courage.”
Your jaw dropped a little, scoffing at the scheming of it all.
“You little…”
Clark kissed you before you could swear.
You pushed him back and then pushed him again so he fell back onto the blanket. You didn’t expect him to take you with him.
You shrieked as he pulled you down, his hands landing firmly on the backs of your thighs. Your hands fell on either side of his face, stopping short of his lips touching yours.
“I can’t believe you schemed.”
“I can’t believe it worked.” Clark laughed, rubbing his hands up and down your thighs.
“You’re a menace to society.”
Clark clicked his tongue, “Quite the opposite actually.” Whatever that meant.
“You bumped into me.” You narrowed your eyes.
“And I’d do it again.”
“You have no shame.”
“None. Not when I got the girl.”
