The Caretaker (Little Nightmares OC)
“I will protect you.”
“I will keep you safe.”
Before The Signal
The Caretaker is apart of the Maw staff, introduced as a key part of opportunity for parents to have the perfect getaway. Hence the name, she watched over the children of the Maw. Despite her instructions to carry out a strict, stern figure towards the children, The Caretaker treated the children as her own and only carried out discipline when necessary.
She was initially a counselor sent from the south. Stationed at a quiet camp in the middle of a desert, she had an already excellent background and experience with troubled children. She was given a better paying position at the Maw. Although she would have to travel far, she knew this would be a perfect opportunity to broaden her background and meet her personal career goals.
Despite The Caretaker’s career choices not following her attributes, given that she dealt with the worst of children, she still showed kindness, understanding, and loved all of her children dearly like they were her own.
Corruption Comes
The Caretaker unfortunately found herself changing, painful and slow. The more time she spent at the Maw the more she could feel herself falling apart. Her memories became choppy, and she would always wake up in the middle of the playroom glued to her rocking chair in front of the TV. There was never anything on it- at least, she thought so. It became hours, then days, then weeks when she last felt full. She still cared for the children, but they all knew that something was wrong. From half cooked food, to the unwashed dishes, from the books that were no longer read and stories no longer told, to the long hours of sitting in front of the TV; she was a shell of a human, a person performing her duties with no ambition.
Despite it all, she still loved her children. She wanted to protect them. She wanted them safe. But something more sinister lingered, something like a virus spreading throughout her brain, body, and soul: she wanted them for herself, and herself alone.
Corruption Complete
The Caretaker haunts the playroom. Her hair has grown longer than it ever has. She is no longer herself, but a sinister, evil shadow of what she used to be. Deep in her heart she only wants to protect them, wants to hide them away from the pain and sorrow that she aches with.
She doesn’t know where most of the children went. The playroom echoes with the static from the TV. Although, sometimes they pass by ever so quietly, but she can hear them. She listens for them to come home, to come back and play with her hair like they used to.
They sneak around like scared mice in a room of rattlesnakes.
Why do they look at her like that? Why do they run away?
What are they so afraid of?
——————————————————
The Caretaker comes from the assumption that the signal is what creates the “monsters” of little nightmares. The signal brings them to delusion, like they are stuck in a repetitive state with no sense of wrong doing. Side note, I sort of think of the children as monsters too, which I’m pretty sure that’s a given hence “Little Nightmares”. I think they are just a bit more self aware and less “infected”.
