This was supposed to be a video, thanking people for attending last night’s training, and a reminder of Sunday’s training (2/27/22 @ 4pm ET). But I can’t bring myself to be on camera today. I’m in too much pain. While I’m still 100% in favor of men being emotionally engaged and I have no problems being seen crying; it’s a pain in the ass when trying to speak coherently. I’m gonna practice self-care and go rest and Be Kind to Myself. Do you make SMART goals? SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and today we are covering Timely. When it comes to goals, humans psychologically work better when we are faced with a deadline or an end date. Saying “I resolve to lose 20 lb this year” doesn't really have the same kind of impact as saying I'm going to lose 20 lb over the next 90 days, does it? Also, setting an end date helps to reverse engineer the steps and progress needed to meet your goals. Example: when I started my fitness journey, I could do 3 push ups. My goal was 60 pushups in a minute, and I have myself 90 days to achieve it. I achieved my goal by adding 5 pushups a week 😁 And this isn't to say that when your time is up that you have “failed;" that's not it at all. When your allotted time is up you assess where your at because you've set Specific, Measurable, Achievable and Relevant goals and now it's Time (pun intended😉) to celebrate your progress and make new goals. All progress is good progress and the goal here is progress over perfection. I didn't set out to lose 120 lb because that's just huge. Instead I set out to lose 1 lb and then I celebrated that achievement 120 times. How many times have you tried a restrictive or punitive diet? How many times has it worked? 🤔 I was on the weight roller coaster 🎢 for decades, and I struggled with fad diets, crash diets, liquid diets, you name it. The thing they all had in common was denial; I was denying myself pleasure when it came to my food choices. There are no "right" or "wrong" foods when it comes to improving your health and progressive, sustained weight loss. Weight loss happens when you're in a calorie deficit, meaning you're using more energy than you're consuming. I achieved my success when I stopped trying to punish myself into good health, and instead of denying myself sugar (and Cake!), I ate smaller portions while increasing my overall activity level. It took me 3 years to drop my first 60 pounds... and one year to drop the second 60 😁 The difference? I had a Coach and mentor to help guide me during the second part of my journey ❤️ The second biggest mistake when it comes to losing weight and improving your health is trying to go it alone. I mean, can you? Sure, it's possible. In my experience, it's a lot more difficult and time consuming, though. I took this picture while experiencing both back and nerve pain. I'm disabled; I have a Spinal Cord Stimulator that helps me manage nerve damage in my groin, and I've got degeneration in three discs as a result of being so heavy for so long and not taking care of myself. I'm smiling because I was practicing Gratitude and thankful I could take as long as I needed to rest, thankful that I have such an amazing and supportive spouse, and that she has such comfortable thighs to use as pillows ❤️ Make sure you're scheduling enough time to rest; if you're not taking time for your wellness, you'll be spending time recovering from illness. What differences do you see in this #eightyearchallenge ? By the numbers, it's 2013 on the left and I'm 290 pounds (I peaked at 320 two years later). On the right it's 2021 and I'm 195 pounds (what I weighed when I graduated Navy boot camp at 18) In 2013 I was still deeply wounded and attached to carrying that hurt with me. I was toxic, didn't love myself, and constantly searching for external validation and approval from romantic partners. 😞 In 2021 I was three years into my (ongoing) Healing and Recovery journey. The ripple effect of getting healthy What are some of the immediate benefits of improving your health? Lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, improved stamina, and increased energy to name a few. Have you thought about who else benefits when you improve your health? For those of you with kids, a recent graduate of Body Positive was absolutely aglow when talking about how his relationship with his kids had improved. He has more energy to go on walks with them after work, he’s got a morning fruit smoothie ritual with his son, and his daughter stopped calling him Mr GrumpyFace because he’s less stressed. 😁😁😁 Another client was reluctant to go walking in the cold, and flat out told me he wouldn’t go when it was under 35 degrees. 🥶 Last week he was excitedly talking about going out when it was 25 degrees because his dogs like it, and he’s noticed improvements in their mood when they go for longer walks. 🥰 My last success story for today is about sex. Today we’re going to talk butt stuff; specifically your poop. Poop has been on my mind lately because I’ve hit the age where colon cancer screenings are now part of my annual physical. Regardless of your age, I recommend you start inspecting your bowel movements. There's a lot of information about your overall health available through your poop. For example, If you’re passing uncomfortable hard pellets, you could be low on fiber or dehydrated. Also, if your throne room experiences require a lot of exertion, grunting, or are just overall unpleasant, it might be time to look at what you eat and your activity level and make some adjustments. It’s estimated that 15 million American men are affected by Irritable Bowel Syndrome, including one of my recent clients. He worked construction and often didn’t have access to a fridge, so bringing lunch from home wasn’t an option. He struggled with eating out during the workday because he’d need the porta potty within an hour after eating, and sometimes more than once. In a word, he was miserable, and his bowels were affecting his job performance. Within two months of working together he’d identified and eliminated his problem foods, breaking his reliance on the porta potty and increasing his job performance and quality of life. How you lose weight is more important than how fast you lose weight. Again, how you lose weight is more important than how fast you lose weight. I saw a facebook post the other day that promised dropping a pants size in 3 days by drinking meal replacement shakes, and it got me hot. 🤬 Sure, it’s theoretically possible to drop that much weight that fast, but at what cost? How are you gonna keep the weight off after that? 🤔 Meal replacement shakes and supplements are band-aids for your weight issues, and don’t address your underlying habits and choices that got you where you are now. They might help you drop some weight, but they're not gonna improve your health or fitness level. My goal as a Coach is to help you become the healthiest version of you that you choose to be, and that includes safe and sustained weight loss while reducing your daily aches and pains through celebrating your body with exercise. 🎉 Dropping a pants size in 3 days from meal shakes ain’t gonna do a thing to help your low back pain, and is only perpetuating your weight rollercoaster.
