It’s with both happiness and sadness that we are returning home. We are both missing family, friends, our own bed, English food, beer and culture as well as our other bikes, but we know we will now be missing the excitement of somewhere new tomorrow, the expectation of a new place and new people, the time on the bikes travelling the roads. We know we will do this again sometime in the future, who knows when maybe when we retire, but it’s in the blood now.

We have both had the most amazing experience, and have learned so much. We have also made some new friends on the road, which we hope to keep in contact with as well as see again one day.

I have to personally say that Carol has been the perfect travelling partner, and has put up with me through it all, we have both supported each other very well, and our relationship is so much stronger for the trip.

So the over night ferry from Rotterdam to Hull was quite smooth, we slept well but both woke at 3, Carol managed to get back to sleep, I’m writing this after trying to sleep for the last hour, with no joy. We are getting close and we gave been promised landing at 7 with good weather.

Leaving the ferry seemed to take forever, but in fact only took an hour, then the short ride home and both Poppy and Dasiy made it, they are tucked up in the warm garage with our other bikes. And that is it folks the journey ends, we hope there will be another chapter.

Was Awake early this morning and saw I hadn’t done Guy a cuppa last night, well apparently I asked if he wanted one and he said I MAY not drink it so I didn’t do him one 😂😂😂. After  breakfast we were discussing about the bikes feeling so nervous about if she will get to the port deep down I know she will make it. We still had hour and half to go to book out so we had our last cup of tea in our favourite cups. Thanks Helen. We booked out just after 10 Poppy started straight away we got about a mile down the road and I stopped in a layby as we was going over a bridge with no hard shoulder and I dare not risk going over it. After 5 mins we set off again and we made all the way to the port yippeee. We weren’t there long when 2 guys turned up on Harleys but they left after a while to find food don’t think they realised there was a pub right opposite us 😂. The check in opened up at 3 and then we got straight on the ferry, up a steep runway which was fine, but Poppy and Daisy are really struggling up hills. But they both made it. We were first bikes on, parked up then walked away lucky we saw a piece of paper on wall saying that we had to strap our bikes down, and we have ti take all responsibility! which is fine but they don’t supply proper straps so we doubled strapped them. Guy is not happy about it. Not about strapping it down but the fact it’s not on proper hooks. We had to strap 2 fully loaded bikes onto a canvas strap on the floor. We finally found our room, I always get lost on these things 😂. After shower and change we went of to find a bar there not open till 4.30 so Starbucks for a cuppa and sandwich as we were starving. We then moved to the sunset lounge listened to someone on a guitar.

If you are free we are having a beer in our local on Saturday between 1 and 5 the Hed’on Inn in Hedon of course. Will be nice if we see you but if not we will see you soon.

I was awake at 3 worrying about getting on the ferry we don’t get on it till Wedmesday 😂. I fell back asleep about 4.30 then all of a sudden Guy woke me up I thought I had slept in my heart was going mad 😂. Guy informed me the hotel I booked which said it was 2 miles from ferry port was actually 32 miles 😱, apparently it’s 2 miles if you swim or fly 😂. Guy has now booked another hotel which is 5 miles from the port so hopefully will only take 2 stops to get there but we have all day. We got up had breakfast got our bags outside for 5.50 as we got told he wanted to be gone by 6 it’s 6.15 and we are still waiting.

He turned up at 6.20. in a little car we got told it would be a land rover type car.

The driver couldn’t speak any English, so we both sat in the back so we could talk and watch films. It was funny as the driver was moaning about drivers and lorrys he couldn’t overtake (it didn’t stop him though). We stopped a few times for little rest it seems he had been sent to Frankfurt the day before and had very little sleep 😱. He kept asking Guy if he needed to be off at junctions like we knew where we was going. Guy did have his google map on and helped him a little. The journey was long and I kept falling asleep even Guy slept. we finally got to our hotel I emptied the car whilst Guy went to find someone, in order to find out where to put the bikes. Whilst our driver was undoing the bikes on his own luckily Guy got back to help him to undo Daisy first. Guy tried explaining that he needed to undo the straps a little at a time, he didn’t understand and undid the first one fully and she wobbled thankfully Guy was holding her and Poppy was still on trailer. We got her off then Poppy’s turn, but first we needed to but the handle bars back up, so asked the driver if the had given them the spanner he just looked at me and grumbled something at me. So I had to find our spanner as doing this Guy was back and took over phew 😂. We got Poppy off and parked up, we thanked the driver for bringing us and off he went. We are in a lovely little motel. with a church quite near. It has lots of bells and tinkly things ever hour we will see what the night brings with that.

We what a little walk round the village got some water and choclate for the next day. Then in to the pub and they don’t do pints it’s glasses that are just over half a pint. We had a few, may be a few too many lol, then asked for the food menu, there was nothing at all vegitraian so we decided to head out for a restaurant, we found a Chinese and had a meal there. We were so shocked at the prices, we have been so spoilt, with good food at cheap prices, but the closer you get to home the more expensive it is getting.

We then stumbled back to the hotel as we were both sleepy and had had enough beer for tonight.

Was woken up at 5.00 by the ferry  announcing breakfast. We struggled to get up as we both slept in one bed after the day befores performance, I slept on the top bunk but couldn’t get down so Guy had to catch me 😂😂😂. We had a right giggle about that. After an ok brekkie we got ready and went down to the bikes mine wasn’t really strapped down but she was still up right (phew thank God it wasn’t rough).

We set and was 3rd off the ferry whoop whoop we was so excited we followed an exit sign and went up a hill and poppy stopped 😱. Oh no I was swearing a little bit as I couldn’t get her started again. Guy came over and managed to get her going again so off we went again and it turned out we was lost on the port lucky we wasn’t the only ones so not so embarrassing 😂. Then poppy started chugging again we could see a petrol station but she stopped again Guy went to the petrol station whilst I started pushing poppy then he ran back to help us. Then we filled up. We got passed the 5 mile mark and was still going yippeee but we got to 20 miles and she started coughing and spluttering again. But managed a couple more miles and she stopped again so waited a few minutes and off we set well long story short she was only doing 2 miles at most. we had missed a turn off and found a picnic area to stop and decide what our next plan was. We left poppy for 20 minutes, we decided to come off the motorway and go to a little town called Hammoor and see if anyone could fix her. We saw a hotel and stopped, after the room was booked they told us where someone could help us. But they couldn’t, they told us where someone could right near the hotel, but he is on holiday 😂😂😂. We came back to hotel and decided to ring the AA we just wanted them to recover us and we knew we would have to pay but no they were no help, they gave us a number for someone in Germany but they kept putting the phone down on Guy as they couldn’t speak English. Anyway after a few tears off me because I really wanted to ride her home. Guy finally found someone who could help he is picking the bikes up today and picking us up in morning and taking us to Europort where we have now got a hotel booked. We are now just waiting for the lorry to turn up then go and do some shopping as everywhere round here is shut on a Monday even the hotel resturant and bar. The trailer finally turned up and Guy nearly had an heart attack as there was only one seat on van but the guy said we are in a bigger van tomorrow. The guy then took the bikes back to the depot, 10 mins down road then got another car to pick us up to get the money out of an atm as there card machines were not working. After that he took us  to an Aldi for some food and beer (of course) and waited for us how nice of him. We are getting picked up 6 in morning we can get both bikes on ferry and home fingers crossed. When we got back we had some food then looked to see if they was anything to do round here and they wasn’t so decided on an early night and watched some films. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

The view from the cabin is what you expect, Sea, relatively calm, we are travelling at 18 miles an hour, so far have traveled 60 miles while sleeping.

When we had breakfast an hour later it was not bad, usual expensive but captive audience. Then back to the Cabin to chill before lunch. The cabin had a full sized window, we are able to look out at the sea and the odd passing boat, while we try to get a little rest.

Nothing really much to do on the boat so just sat and read and watched films.

Day 146 – Latvia to Germany by sea Woke up at 7:00 only 3 hours sleep, we were told breakfast started at 8:00, only an hour to wait.

Up and about early well Guy dragged me out of bed at 8 for breakfast 😂😂. After breakfast we went back to room to sort out panniers as we are getting on a ferry tonight, yes you read it right, we are getting a ferry, we are going from Latvia to Germany which will cut our road miles down by 800. We are both gutted about this, but our Daisy just won’t make it, she has started to vibrate a lot more and is starting to make some rattly noises 😭😭.But she is plodding on, if we have to slow down to 20mph that is what we will do. It’s only 160 miles today so we have got everything crossed 🤞. We only need one pannier to take on ferry after that is sorted we just sat and chilled, as the ferry isn’t till 4 in morning.The ride over was fine, two stops first for petrol and a breather, we also had biscuits and water. The second was for a meal, which was nice BTW. We arrived at the temeinal at 430 nearly 12 hours before it is due to leave, but we had nothing to do and a detour was out of the question. We are told they will arrive and check us in by 9 we are hoping to get on the ferry early so we can get something to eat a beer and a good night’s sleep but we will see.

We have done our final  chain lube at the terminal and disposed of the remains of the chain lube, less to carry home, we have left things all the way home as we either did not need them any more or they were getting to a point of not being useful. Just makes room and cuts down on weight.Now we are just waiting, and reading books. After returning to the Hotel and having the obligatory cuppa we popped down to the local shop for supies, something for lunch and water mainly for tomorrow.We attached our latest flags to our panniers, Latvia. Our early morning then caught up on us, so we had a couple of hours nap time. Tea we ate in the hotel, watched a film and then off to bed, a slow day really but tomorrow we travel to a town called,  Liepāja, its 164 miles, we have everything crossed for Daisy.
