cein & jeha in begins youth

i yap to myself about begins youth all the time so why not post about it. i really loved the show but (amongst other things...) i wish jeha and cein's relationship was explored more, particularly i thought it was strange how its never specified how they actually met for the first time, but i have a little theory.

i think jeha was once a piano student of cein's mom and the piano studio being their family home, obviously jeha and cein would have met. i think this mainly because of jeha's contact name for cein "piano hyung".

it makes sense to me that jeha would name cein's contact after his primary association with him.

furthermore, when jeha enters cein's home in the flashback of the start of episode 9, he seems familiar with the house. now, obviously he's apprehensive and wary because of the gas and the petrol and the fact he's breaking in and what he's been told is going to happen BUT he doesn't seem disoriented or lost, as you would be if entering a completely new building for the first time. in the same vein, when he calls out to eunjoo, he doesn't specify who he is. if you were entering a home unannounced in this kind of situation, wouldn't you de-escalate the fear of the homeowner by saying you mean no harm or something?? i know jeha is scared, but he doesn't do this, almost as if he expects eunjoo to recognise his voice and know its alright. this is a bit fuzzy but it makes sense to me.

the reason i really believe this theory though is because of jeha's mother and their step-family. now, very little is said about jeha's life pre-his mother's remarriage but in episode 3, he does say that she chose her husband because of his money.

("that" = money)

this implies that they were comparatively poorer before. and all of his mother's complaints throughout that he doesn't know how to behave suggest to me that jeha has been thrust into a higher social class, one which he is not used to, which would explain sudden hobbies like golf and the PIANO.

i don't know for sure about korea or anywhere else but where i live piano lessons are expensive and knowing how to play the piano is seen as quite prestigious. therefore, i think that, using this new money, jeha's mother would have enrolled him in piano lessons at the local piano academy in order to have him fit better into their new rich lifestyle. she treats golf in the same fashion, which is also a very expensive and prestigious pastime. obviously, after the fire and eunjoo's death, jeha couldn't take lessons anymore, which is why he never plays or mentions piano in the show, despite it being of enough significance in his relationship with cein to be his contact name.

in terms of the timeline, in episode 8, jeha's stepfather says to mingook that its been over three years, presumedly since they married or all started living together.

so maybe it was three / four years ago that jeha started taking the piano lessons, and met cein for the first time. that seems enough time for them to become friends, and it could explain why they're so close, if jeha knew cein before, throughout, and after his mother's death and knew eunjoo personally.

one problem with this though is that jeha's stepfather seems to know nothing of it.

he only "hears" this from mingook, as if he didn't know it before, despite it apparently being neighbourhood gossip, and it seems even weirder that he wouldn't know especially if his stepson was supposed to be visiting their home on the regular. (although later in the show he's more familiar with "min cein" as a name, and this is only from episode 5)

my only explanation for this is that its (annoyingly) common for men to know very little about the details of their family members, the provision of after-school activities most often being managed by the mother. moreover, he doesn't like nor care about jeha all that much, so its not surprising that he wouldn't have known about the piano academy.

that concludes my theory. there's probably something massive that i'm forgetting but hey.
