oh hi! before anything i’d just like to say how incredible your blog is and how it helped me a lot while writing my fics. i have a question that my research didn’t help much, i wonder how a poisoned dagger might work. i read somewhere that it’s covered in wax to protect the poison, but if you have any more info on poisoned weapons that would be really cool! anything, really.
like, how plausible it is that during a war, a princess got “gifted” a poisoned dagger for erm, an emergency i guess? how would she keep it safe as to not poison herself accidentally? how long would the poison on it be viable, and which poison would be used on it.
thank you and i’m sorry if it’s too much trouble
This ask did make me think a lot and I had to consult with my scientists (who have all questioned me closely after this). Now, the shortcut (but not the lazy way out) to this would be that the knife is cursed (cool concept, who gets effected by it?) or it has magical properties and can be poisonous on command (helpful especially if the owner is like me and forgets).
But if you want to go along the lines of adding poisons, there are a few ways to achieve it but this can be dangerous (applying it could lead to injury and then 💀) or the effect only lasts a while especially if it dries too fast. I would suggest creating a fictional poison as most of these would need to be applied constantly.
Ricin: An oldy but goody, you can find it in castor beans. Ricin can be made into a paste like mixture or a powder. Ricin attacks the protein and kills cells, it causes a fever, nausea, and chest pains leading to respiratory difficulty. It can also cause vomiting, attack blood pressure and cause diarrhea and organ failure. Death comes within 36-72 hours,
Aconitine: This comes from the monkshood plant, would be best applied as a liquid and is fast acting. Death occurs in 2-6 hours. Exposure causes diarrhea, stomach pains, numbness, burning, slow the heart rate with bradycardia.
Abrin: Comes the seeds of the rosary pea, usually found as a powder or liquid. Abrin prevents protein synthesis which kills off cells. A victim would suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, organ failure and find it hard to breathe. Death would be imminent in 36-72 hours.
Tetrodotoxin (TTX): This comes from puffer fish so it's not readily available, could be applied as a liquid. TTX causes disruption in nerve signals, paralysis, and causes respiratory failure. 4-6 hours to kill.
Saxitoxin: found in shellfish (like mussels, clams, and scallops), freshwater cyanobacteria and causes paralysis and respiratory failure. A victim would feel some light numbness, and muscle weakness and die within 2-12 hours depending on concentration of dose.
T-2 Toxin: Comes from mold in grains, comes in powder form but can be made into a gel-like substance. It attacks the protein killing cells. After the victim suffers from diarrhea, vomiting, diarrhea, immunosuppression death will come in a few days.
Diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS): A mycotoxin usually found in powder form, comes from fungi and contaminated grains. This damages DNA and protein causing vomiting, diarrhea, skin issues and immunosuppression. A victim can die within a few days.
Metals can also give you the effect your looking for but this might be slower acting.
Bronze: Some bronze alloys contain trace amounts of arsenic and repeated exposure to the blade (death by a thousand cuts?) but very slow acting.
Mercury Blades: Mercury is liquid at room temp but a fantasy blacksmith might be able to coat a blade in it but it probably would not last long.
Space Metal: For a fantasy setting, could the metal at the heart of a fallen star be poisonous? It could be. And they look cool.
As for storage, as you can see these would linger in the blade so the poisoned blade could be earmarked for a one and done job or have it's own special sheath or perhaps like I suggested, be enchanted to be poisonous when needed.
This ask also reminded of this particular scene in Reign.
