(   dev patel  .  cis man  .  he/him  )       —       blasting  destruction  by  joywave  down  main  street  we’ve  spotted  AJAY DESAI  sporting  their  silver rings.  the  thirty-two  year  old  MEDIUM  who’s  been  in  town  for  eight years  often  can  be  seen  drinking alone at bars, sighing loudly to himself, having his third too-sweet hot coffee of the day,  or  working  as a PERSONAL ASSISTANT.  people  say  they  display  kind  and  fatalistic traits,  but  we  rather  trust  their  vibes:  perpetual dark circles smudged under eyes, a briefly stopped heart, the cold glow of a phone late at night, a plate of fruit cut by loving hands, placed on a table when no one was looking, the futile pursuit of doing the right thing.  also,  we’ve  heard  they  love  DOGS !   aren’t  they  fascinating ?   

biography .

ajay got fourteen years of a normal life before everything changed. his first fourteen years of life were not unlike those of most other children; ajay was well-liked among peers, perhaps a little too talkative in class, but otherwise a good kid. he had two loving parents, a mother who was maybe a touch too strict at times and a father who was a touch too lenient. they were not perfect, as parents never are, but it was a happy upbringing. drowning, near death experience, surgery tw — then, the summer that ajay was fourteen, he nearly drowned during a lake trip with friends. his heart stopped while he was in the water, and it was only because someone's older sibling happened to have taken a lifeguard course the semester before that he ended up surviving. he was diagnosed with bradycardia soon after, and underwent surgery to get a pacemaker. — end tw his ability to see ghosts emerged after this incident—and it wasn't something he noticed right away. for one, only he could hear or see them, and two, they never appeared unless he actively sought them out. the first time he talked to a ghost had to do with a prank at a high school halloween party ( which, turned out not to be a prank ). three, spirits could very rarely hide the truth from him, nor were most strong enough to hurt him. in the town he grew up in, abilities like his were beyond rare—unbelievable even. his ability to "talk to ghosts" was seen as nothing more than a party trick — something that must have a plausible explanation, but to demand one from him felt like asking a magician how he pulled a rabbit out of his top hat. but, ajay realized he could help people. it started off small, and then, it spiraled. mostly, it bothered no one. he told his neighbors where their recently passed child hid their wedding ring, politely asked a spirit to stop haunting a property where a new couple moved into, helped someone come to terms with a missing person's case that the police had given up on. his reputation slowly began to grow. law enforcement, murder tw — in the spring of his junior year in high school, a victim's family asked him to try to talk to a recently murdered loved one. ajay did. what he maybe should have realized and didn't at the time was that his ability to see ghosts — at the end of the day — made no fucking sense and had no logical explanation. when the clues ran out and the case went cold, ajay was made out to be the most likely culprit for knowing a little too much about a crime when the cops knew too little. his words were used against him. then, right when the case was about to go to trial, a law firm appeared out of nowhere and took on his case pro bono. he was let off the hook. — end tw though he was deemed innocent, rumors only grow and grow, and many in his hometown still believed him to be guilty, convinced that he only got off the hook on a technicality. as his "most important" final years of high school were occupied by a criminal court case, he hadn't taken college applications seriously enough to be accepted anywhere, not to mention the toll that the experience took on his mental health. he moved out of state, taking any job that would hire a guy with only a high school degree ( retail, food service, call centers, and bill collection ), slowly chipping away at an online degree during his time off. he earned a modest but honest living, and got used to living well below his means. then, a few years after living paycheck to paycheck, he started taking money to talk to ghosts for people after one particular hard month when he had to take care of emergency vet bills for his dog.

again, it spiraled. first, the jobs were mostly innocuous, and paid very little. then, the law firm that rescued him began to contact him again to contact some dead people related to some of their clients' cases — or so they said. they were short excursions for a generous amount of money, and while he realized it was dumb to take money for the thing that nearly got him incarcerated, he was finally able to upgrade from his ikea bed frame that was missing a leg, so he hadn't asked too many questions. but he started getting asked to contact more and more dangerous ghosts, some of his "clients" were no longer human, and after a "job" where he almost got seriously injured, ajay packed his bags and ran. details tba, but he eventually ended up in portum, where he's been working as fabien's assistant. :)

other facts .

tl:dr; unluckiest guy in the world ( exaggeration ). what happens to a teenage boy when they can talk to ghosts and no one believes him :/ is not in contact with his parents anymore.

is not easily spooked. he's crossed paths with all kinds of supernatural beings even before reaching portum, and he's also been spooked by his bills at the end of every month… so there's not much that fazes him now.

has a dog ! a mutt… a rescue… name pending…

back when he did take money to talk to ghosts, he would sometimes play up the mysticism aspect to his mediumship… until he got tired of it. he learned he'd make more money if he brought crystals and put on jewelry and put on a show of sorts ? otherwise he'd just have to be like "hey, you there ?" and then the spirit appeared, which didn't give some people what they really wanted … he was trying to make money here.

the more he used his ability, the easier it was for ghosts to contact him in return. while he would have to "summon" ghosts in the past to be able to see them, not he can just see them without even trying and they can also affect him more easily. he's gotten good at ignoring unwanted ghost attention.

at the end of the day, a nice guy. means well, but a bit cynical for obvious reasons. he knows that kindness is often mistaken for naivety, and as his kindness has been taken advantage of in the past, he no longer wears his heart on his sleeve.

(   evan mock  .  cis man  .  he/they  )       —       blasting  cool-doug, at night  by  sammy rae & the friends  down  main  street  we’ve  spotted  KIERAN “KIKI” AQUINO  sporting  their  pearl earring & pink buzzcut.  the  seventy-two (appears twenty-seven)  year  old  VAMPIRE  who’s  been  in  town  for  six years  often  can  be  seen  driving around town with rolled-down windows, crying during sad scenes in movies, trying new recipes,  or  working  as  an  SURGEON  at  PORTUM GENERAL.  people  say  they  display  good-humored  and  irreverent traits,  but  we  rather  trust  their  vibes:  the scent of salted ocean air, knowing that the sun is there even if you cannot see it, hearing someone whistle a song you forgot the name of, a dog running with a stick of dynamite between its teeth.  also,  we’ve  heard  they  love  SURFING, DISCO, & BIRDS !   aren’t  they  fascinating ?   

biography .

kieran is born in 1952 to two older parents who had, in their retirement, finally followed their dreams to move away from rigorous city living to a small coastal town in southern australia. his parents had all but given up on having children, and kieran's birth was a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. kieran ( better known as “kiki” ) had a happy upbringing, awash with love. it soon became apparent that he was a surfing prodigy. by the age of ten, he was competing in national competitions, winning multiple junior titles in the late 60s & early 70s. he disappeared from the sport in his mid-twenties, something that was seen as a shame but not too deeply investigated. most attributed his early retirement to an injury he sustained during a competition ( or out of it ). in reality, he fell in love with a merman @highertides. after realizing that his boyfriend was indeed immortal, not one to be outdone by fate, kiki went and got himself turned into a vampire. voluntarily. ah, young love.

extras .

has been in a committed relationship with his husband ( rui aquino ) for the last fifty years !!

while not entirely reckless, he's not opposed to taking risks. he doesn't often let his thoughts spiral, instead choosing to act first and deal with the consequences.

athletic & active ! still surfs at the crack of dawn and has probably run marathons before.

gets along with kids — maybe because he still is one at heart. lies to them about how old he is and where he is from. there are kids running around portum who think he’s a 500 year old vampire pirate.

was a part of melbourne's counterculture in the 70's.

on that note. lies for fun !! but it’s rarely malicious. very lame sense of humor. finds himself funny.

owns two caiques: razor and scooter. owns some pet fish as well.

this isn’t his first time in portum. he also briefly lived in town sometime in the 80’s(?), but left after a bit. probably to travel.

being a surgeon isn’t his first career path. only the truly bizarre and immortal would find med school to be a side quest, but that’s what being a surgeon is for him. it’s something he enjoys and finds interesting.

wanted connections .

SIRE . he would have been turned ~45 years ago (in 1979). not looking for anything super weighty or angsty here. while i’m more than open to a past negative relationship, maybe they have a mutual understanding now and kiki is more or less just an annoyance. or, maybe their relationship has more or less been positive for the past few decades, and your muse felt that it was refreshing that someone wanted the bite for a “pure” reason as opposed to wealth or power. — taken by seyfi mocan .

IMPRINT . people he’s taken under his wing !! i was mainly thinking younger vampires, but it could be other supernaturals. we could work out the particulars, but i feel like he’s the type to accumulate strays 😭

A LONG WAY BACK . long-term connections and/or people he’s met outside of portum !!

GROWING PAINS . a mentor/guide of sorts; someone older than kiki (90+) who's been someone he has confided in throughout the years. while kiki did consider the ramifications of being 27 forever, it's one thing to think you'll know what it's like and another to actually be faced with the reality of outliving friends, family, and the culture you grew up in. — taken by calahan macarthy .
