Adonis closed his eyes and concentrated. He felt the wind blowing upon his naked untrimmed chest. He felt the sand and aluminum dust he poured earlier under his bare feet. The rough grit mashed between his mahogany toes. Adonis maneuvered his hands and chanted ancient words. He felt the ground shift beneath him and he opened his eyes. Speckled translucent glass surrounded him in floating shards. He brought it together and made a mirror. He checked his teeth and made sure his hair was agreeable. It was. “Looking perfect as ever.” He smiled. The mirror shattered back into sand and the glittering aluminum dust. It floated in the air and traveled into the pouch on his belt. “Never know when you’re going to need a mirror.”

Hannie had been wondering around avoiding doing the ever growing mountain of work she needed to complete. Hannie had stumbled upon someone she’d never seen before doing a spell she had never witnessed; then again, there were a lot of spells she was unfamiliar with. "WOW!” she exclaimed as she witnessed the materials travel back into his belt. “How did you DO THAT?” She asked. She took out a small pink notebook and pencil ready to write down any information. Haneul, a natural magics kid, tended to favor spells that she witnessed first hand. Reading about them in books was find, but nothing caught her interest more than when she witnessed it being done in real life.

He blinked, bemused at the sudden flood of information as he followed her - still just a bit reluctant. “Andrew Lin,” he said, nodding at her assessment. “Knowledge, yes. I would say it’s because I apply myself though, rather than anything inherently smart about me as a person.”

“Ah! That is so cool,” she said clapping her hands together. “There is nothing more admirable than hard work! I....I try to work hard, but I get distracted so easily,” she admitted. Hannie was an open book, something that usually came back to bite her. However, she felt at home at BrakeBills, and that meant she was very trusting. “Can I call you Andy?” She asked.

“Aww that sounds wonderful! I guess your unit would be different, since you’re a naturalist after all. I mean, I know we’re all gonna learn basic stuff, but still.” she giggled, “Well, maybe try starting with a simple plant? Like, I dunno, a daisy or something? What sort of things would you need?”

“Oh yeah,” she said. Haneul was still getting used to the way things at BrakeBills worked. Her parents, though they had no real magic in their blood, had always believed in it. So she grew up believing that it was on big thing, not something that was broken up into different aspects, though she wasn’t surprised when she learned about this either. “Yes! Daisies are so pretty!” She said excitedly. She took out a small pink notebook that had drawings and notes scribbled in it. “It says I need chalk, a clear white stone, five candles, and belief,” she said, “Oh! and a plant of course! I think I have some seeds,” she opened her backpack and dug around. Her family grew flowers and had given her some seeds to plant in her dorm room. She pulled out the package triumphantly. “Tada~!” She said with a smile.

“Well, as long as it is for studying purposes I am in! But whom or what are we gonna direct the spell at?”

“Does it have to be making one person love another ... or can we do something like for me to love vegetables?”

Eve’s demeanor instantly transformed when she saw her adorable friend Hannie in the doorway. “Oh my gosh, of course! I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since I left. What chapter were you assigned? I’ve got my book here if you wanna use it.” The blonde sat up and patted her bed, encouraging the other to sit with her.

Haneul walked over and lightly plopped on Eve’s bed. She let out a sigh and played with her bangs, something she did before she got ready to admit she was paying zero attention. She gave Eve a bright smile, “Erm, I am not quite sure...I started thinking about trying out a spell I found. It is to help grow flowers and herbs.”

He has been watching the other person for quite a while. it wasn’t that he didn’t cared about studying, don’t get him wrong he really did but….not like that “If you think eating that book is going to help you’re greatly mistaken”

“I’m not that hungry,” she said. She realized that she might have looked strange to the older peer. “Sometimes you can smell the ingredients people used to create spells,” she said with a grin. “I was wondering if I could taste it, but then I thought about all the germs people have on their hands...and if everyone washed their hands before handling their book...then whether or not I want to start using gloves...”

He could keep arguing but would it be worth it in the end? Probably not; the easiest course would likely be just to give in and go along with the request so that he could get back to his studying. “Fine. Lead the way. There’s no need to apologize. It was probably true, although that’s how I always am.”

Hannie smiled and shook her head. “Maybe, but I intend to find out,” she said with determination. Hannie had a habit of being a self-proclaimed friend. Though she always had the best of intentions, she sometimes overstepped her boundaries. “I’m Hannie, well, Haneul, but I go by Hannie.” She said walking towards their destination. “I’m a Natural Magic kid, I take it you are a,” she took a moment to look over him. “A knowledge? You seem very smart, though most seem smart to me,” she said with an embarrassed laugh.

Eve had laid out on her bed, sighing as she rewrote her notes from her previous class. Her doe eyes were narrowed as she tried to make sense of the ethical bullshit the teacher had been spewing, and was clearly becoming frustrated when someone knocked on her door. “Mmm? Come in.” she said of-offhandedly, not looking up from her notes.

Hannie, like usual, had been thinking about something else during her class and completely spaced out. She poked her head into the room, “Hey...um...Eve,” she said with an embarrassed smile. By now everyone knew that she could be kind of a space cadet. “Do you think we could go over the stuff that we talked about in class?”

Her comment brought his head up at last, frowning in indignation; he wasn’t grumpy - he didn’t particularly like being interrupted while he was reading, but that didn’t make him grumpy. “I’m not,” he said finally, eyes flickering from the girl back to his book, “and I don’t eat messily. It just happens.”

She gave him a soft smile. “Then let’s go and get something to eat!” She hummed. She tilted her head observing him silently. “I’m sorry about calling you grumpy pants. Maybe it is because I don’t really know you, so what I think is grumpy is something else.” She shrugged her shoulders. “But, that could change,” she added.

“Tonight the stars are in a favorable position for a love spell,” Gwen said brightly. Her smile dropped and she leaned forward just a fraction, speaking hurriedly, “Not that I plan on doing that!”

“Really?!” Hannie said with a pleased giggle. “We should try it out...for studying purposes of course,” she added.

Kate looked up from her cellphone, irritation clearly written on her face. “Some prick keeps sending me creepy texts. It’s like something from a fucking movie.This is ridiculous.”

Hannie let out a small squeak. The thought of the someone sending creepy texts — or well anything — sent shivers down her spine. “M..maybe we could do a protection spell,” she said in a concerned voice.

“What? No, no, I don’t take books when I eat. They just get dirty, and I hate that.” There were few things more annoying than books with food all over the pages. “And I don’t have time for a break right now.”

“Huh?” she said thinking for a moment. Two things went through her mind. The first was that he must be a dirty eater if he is worried about his books getting dirty. She’d eaten with books, and never had a problem with food in the pages. The second was that he definitely needed a break. “Hmm, I think that you totally need a break! You are a bit of a grumpy pants, mister. As for getting food in your books...well don’t eat messily!” she smiled.

She still kept her sunny disposition. “You could always bring your study material! Or just take a teeny, tiny, break!”
