Mars, Mapped 

The USGS has just released a gorgeous new geologic map of Mars, combining data from four separate spacecraft to paint a rainbow-like spectrum of terrain and texture upon the red planet.

See those four bulges on the left side of the spherical projection? Each of those four mountains, Olympus Mons, Ascraeus Mons, Arsia Mons, and Pavonis Mons, are taller than any mountain on Earth, including Mauna Kea (which rises more than six miles from the ocean floor).

This book is further out than far out. It’s an illustrated encyclopedia of an imaginary world, created by the Italian artist, architect and industrial designer Luigi Serafini. It’s around 360 pages long (depending on edition) and written in a completely unintelligible alphabet. The book is comprised of copious hand-drawn colored-pencil illustrations, of bizarre and fantastical flora, fauna, anatomies, fashions, and foods. It’s a fervent, phantasmagorical, feast of fantasy.

Sapphirina copepod, a.k.a. "sea sapphire" is a tiny shrimp like crustacean that makes up the bottom of the food chain. The microscopic layers of crystal plates inside their cells catch light and reflect back different hues, from bright gold to deep blue that resembles like a gem. 

When they’re abundant near the water’s surface the sea shimmers like diamonds falling from the sky. Japanese name this kind of water, “tama-mizu”, jeweled water. Combine this nifty trick with the sea sapphire’s impressively transparent body, and you have an animal as radiant as a star in one moment, and invisible in the next.
