What's cool about Gideon I think is that she's actually, in-universe non-conforming, rather than just being "butch" or "masc" to our sensibilities but relatively passé within the universe. We read Gideon as masculine, yes, but it's not like Gideon acts like Ortus, or Mortus, or Crux. Nor does she act like Aiglamene, for that matter. The Ninth to me presents a kind of monastic androgyny - everyone shaves their head, everyone wears baggy black robes, everyone paints their face. Gideon, with her "ridiculous" hair and aversion to skull paint, is therefore non-conforming to the gender of Ninth. She's also non-conforming to the gender of cavalier, it's not something she was raised in, it's something she struggles to "pass" as. Gideon is basically transcavalier. And I think that's cool! I've seen a lot of people posit basically "what would it even mean to be 'butch' in a post-gender society" and I think Gideon solves that equation nicely by being "butch" to us in the real world and being decidedly nonstandard for both Ninth cavalier and a cavalier in general within the text. You need to look beyond what we consider arbitrarily "masculine" and "feminine" in order to effectively analyze gender in tlt, and I for one think that's very interesting

Obviously I don't care abt like, a fictional relationship "being problematic" I don't think you "aren't allowed" to post about "problematic ships" but it does kind of kill me how people talk abt Palamedes and Dulcinea while conveniently leaving out that he was like. Fourteen? Fifteen? Sending her love letters. I think that's extremely interesting. That's what makes their "relationship" interesting. But idk people weirdly have become attached to paldulcie (and also to campal to some extent) being "the one healthy/'wholesome' ship in tlt" when all evidence points to the contrary. Girl they're "doomed" because that's what happens when a guy started sending you love letters when you were in your 20s and he was like 14. And again I feel like I need to make it clear I am not someone who thinks it's inherently bad to explore these things in fiction but it's weird to ignore lol. Like not only is the whole "one wholesome ship" thing actively more boring but it again seems very odd to ignore that Palamedes was a teenager "in love with" the idea of an adult woman he never met so you can have one Wholesome (coincidentally straight. hm) Ship in a fandom for a series that pretty fundamentally grapples with ideas of love and power and subjugation

She had held her breath instinctively, though she had been serene at the time; to drown, she thought, was softer death than she deserved, and back then to die in Gideon’s arms had seemed entirely correct.
Very chill and casual thing to say about someone you are very chill and casual about. I am also chill and casual about Gideon and Harrow being the center of the other's universe
