So I have heard. This is sad. There's already so much trouble in the world.

Still, I feel bad for people who feel the need to scam others (and the people who are scammed, of course, but who doesn't?). Seems like a sad and scary way to live life.

Anyway...I'm posting all the warnings publicly, just like I shared the original post publicly, so people can see this information.

I do very much think we should look into why people run scams like this, and who originated the text (quite possibly someone very much in need of help?).

The worst result of scams like this would be to make people who can help afraid to do so.

I wasn't aware. And would rather try to help someone who might be a scammer than ignore someone who isn't because I suspected they were.

I mean, Gaza is struggling to get aid and insulin is far too expensive in many places (like in the US, for example).

Also, scamming people has always seemed to me like a desperate act, you know? Done by people who either have no other options or believe they have no other options. I mean, I would feel bad if I scammed someone, wouldn't you? Maybe showing a little kindness to people is the best move anyway, even if the people seem a little sus.

Introduction

Welcome to the Hitchhikers' Guild! We are a group of nerds who want to make the world a better place and encourage our fellow nerds to do the same.

How can I participate?

There are four levels (currently) of participant: investigator, helper, advocate, and change maker. We'll post more details about each one but, in summary: investigators learn about their community; helpers make themselves available to share this information and help individual people; advocates identify specific problems and work with others to solve them; and change-makers put all of their experience together to create change.

Are you associated with Douglas Adams or the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

No. We are just fans. All art was either created by one of us or by people who released them into the public domain.

We chose the name because, early in our friendship, we bonded by reading the entire Hitchhiker's Guide series out loud to each other. The books are important to us, so the name felt right.

You keep saying "We." How many of you are there?

Three, currently.

Okay, but how are you different from the Nerdfighters or Fandom Forward?

Well, all of us are nerdfighters, so not too different? As for FF, they are an official 501c3. We would like to be, but aren't.

Also, we have a leveled badge system. If FF would like to absorb us, or DFTBA would be willing to start making our pins, we would welcome them. For now, though, we're just us.

Did you say "badges?"

Yes! We are selling badges to allow people to literally wear their intentions on their sleeves (or backpacks, hats, jackets, etc.) We are currently selling them for $2 each in an attempt to cover production and shipping costs.

Unlike other badges, you don't earn them and then get them. You wear them during the work you have chosen to commit to. For example, wear the "investigator" badge while you are gathering information. Add the "helper" badge when you are prepared to help people. Add the "advocate" badge when you picked the issue you want to advocate for. Finally, add the "change-maker" badge to indicate that you are working on your big project. The goal is to make the symbols a recognizable sign, saying "this person can be counted on to help you."

In the future, we may add subject-specific badges.

God I fucking hate Olaf the snowman so fucking much holy shit. Holy shit, every frame he's in, every scene, every gif, every jpeg, he's got this painfully vacant, stupid as shit, fuckass look on his stupid lumpy face. Absolutely no part of his ugly as sin piece of shit character design is endearing. His stupid fucking legs? Who the hell makes a snowman with legs. His dumb flaily fucking twig arms? His shitty, lumpy bastard head? The three thousand percent unnecessary dumbass shitass fucking SNOW BUCK TOOTH that no snowman has EVER FUCKING HAD IN tHE HISTORY OF GOD'S GREEN FUCKING EARTH? God, I hate him. I hate him so much. So FUCKING much. Every time I see a stuffed toy Olaf or an Olaf gif or a shitty goddamn commercial, it ignites my primal rage response and I'm overcome by the need to punt this shitty little homunculus into the fucking sun. "Bhurr blur, I'm Olaf the fuckshit snow fucker, I like warm hugs". Fuck you. Fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you. You look like Tow Mater summoned a patronus. Your dumb fucking twig hair makes your whole shitty head look like a hairy skin tag. Any scene he's sad it invokes all the wrath and fury of a spoiled child having a meltdown over a chocolate bar in a w*lmart checkout line. And I know its irrational. That's the worst part. I know he's just a shitty fucking side character in a stupid fucking children's movie, I know it doesn't matter, I know I shouldn't care. But that's part of the problem. The part where no matter the might and fury of my hatred, the locus of my homicidal intent is alltogether inconsequential. I find myself laying awake in the dark in the early hours of the morning consumed by the spirit of Wrath itself, all the force and might of a flaming hurricane directed at a bottle of piss in a ditch by the highway. The absurdity of it all burns me to my core. What better things could this energy be directed towards? And yet my disdain for this stupid, useless, insubstantial failure of endearing character design utterly eclipses the intrigue of all other pursuits. I hate him. I hate him on a level of my mind reserved for the worst of the world's array of sinners, and I can't even begin to justify it. Shitstick the snow dick is, for all intents and purposes, the animated corpse of all of humanity's saccharine pretenses- every condescending, passive-aggressive statement of meaningless upper middle class suburban drama distilled into a single, hateable form. The fucking. Fuck. I have no words. There is no cuss or epithet in any language that can encapsulate the height of the emotions I am experiencing. God, I hate him so much. I hate him so, so fucking much. I want to light his ugly little dumpster body on fire. I want to graphically beat him to death with his own stupid fucking nose. I want to punch him to death. You know that weird feeling you get, when you see a picture of something so cute you find yourself overcome with the bizarre, inexplicable urge to squeeze it? It's EXACTLY like that, except instead of cuteness it's disgust. The wordless knowledge that his existence as a fictional work is evidence of all the failures of mankind. I find myself possessed by the will of a Holy Angel gone rogue with the belief that God has made a mistake, and I alone must correct it. This is the trial by which Samael himself fell from grace. This wild, meaningless rage. A thousand blades of shining steel cast with inhuman force in the direction of a plastic grocery bag floating on a breeze. Hi! I am a volunteer with my local Girl Scout council and put together an Earth Day activity plan based on WAGGGS/UN climate badges and Girl Scout nature badges from all levels. If you are a troop leader, volunteer, or just have a group of kids, here is an Earth Day program you can tailor to your own area and try out!

Part I forget, but the future: Finding Our Steps

Thank you for sticking around to read about the history and the projects of Small Steps. We are now entering a new era, the era where we found the right small step for us.

As mentioned before, we are a team of three. We are all some flavor of nerd but share a love for Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. We had a book club in college where we read all of the (Adams-authored) books out loud to each other. We know not to panic, where not to say Belgium, and of course, the importance of towels.

Introducing: The Hitchhiker's Guild. We will be holding towel drives on or around towel day each year, starting in 2024. We're still working out some of the details, but organizations helping humans often have a need for new towels, and organizations helping domestic animals often have a need for gently used ones.

Updates will be posted here. Thank you for being a part of our new journey.
