All or Nothing Interview (1966)
Steve Marriott [Transcript]: “I think it would be a much better place to live if you could walk down a road with long hair and not be stared at by every middle aged person. They still haven’t accepted it, you know. Accept! [YELLS] They refuse to accept that it goes on, they just close their mind to it. And when they see it, they turn round and [’tsk’ telling off noise].
We don’t go around looking at the older generation and going ‘my god look at that!’ you know. I mean that’s the way they want to dress, that’s the way they want to look, great! They give someone a complex if they keep turning around and looking at you, you know, just because your hair is longer than theirs.
Older people won’t accept what we feel, what we think or anything. They won’t very rarely make compromises, either you know. I don’t think this is so on the younger generation part because I think we try to communicate with them and tell them what we like and what we want to do and what we feel, in fact you can get laughed at, you know, so no wonder there’s a [generation] gap. The older generation has no interest whatsoever, I think, in our generation.
Age means nothing. I think by the time you’re seventeen, you know, you sort of, you can talk to anyone older or anyone younger, you know, I mean around your teens, your twenties, your thirties, and so on. I think the older generation just don’t want to communicate really with the younger [generation]- communication is everything, you know. They just don’t get through, they don’t really want to get through, they’re quite happy.”

Happy 80th Birthday, Pete Townshend!
While you didn’t die before you got old, you’ve shaped a whole generation of guitarists, songwriters, and artists with your work. You’re a hero and an inspiration to so many people, such as myself.
Have a Happy Birthday, and Thank You for Everything!

One of his friends was a boy about Jimmy's age named Jeff Beck. Jeff had built his own guitar and had been playing for a year when he and his sister took the bus over to Jimmy's house in Epsom one weekend afternoon. Jeff played the James Burton solo from Ricky Nelson's "My Babe." "We were immediately like blood brothers,” Jimmy recalled.

“By early 1966 Jeff Beck was already trying to convince Jimmy Page to join him in the Yardbirds so they could play dual lead guitar on stage.”

When they reached Los Angeles…at a band meeting the three original Yardbirds refused to play with Jeff anymore and fired him. Jeff got up to leave and asked Jimmy if he was coming. Jimmy looked at him and said, "No. I'm going to stay behind." With Jeff's departure, the Yardbirds became Jimmy's.

Then in New York, after one of Beck's Fillmore East triumphs, Jimmy played Led Zeppelin’s demo of "You Shook Me" for Jeff, which of course was one of Beck's show stoppers. According to Beck, Jimmy said, "Listen to this, listen to Bonzo, this guy called John Bonham that I've got." When Beck heard the version, his heart sank. “I looked at him and said, “Jim, what?” and the tears were coming out with anger."
