Once again rolling up on the last day with a wildly ambitious embroidery submission. Obviously, this one is unfinished, partly because I bit off more than I could chew given how busy I ended up being, and partly because I bought all the medium to dark blue at my local Michael's.

This piece is a little more abstract than my last one. I really wanted to capture the shape of the church ceiling in Bastogne, and eventually there will be little stars scattered around the crosses on the ceiling. I also plan on adding the tops of pine trees to the bottom for the forest where Easy Company was dug in.

The flowers are either state or national flowers for the Bastogne polycule. From left to right they're Mountain Laurel from Pennsylvania for Babe, a Poppy from Belgium for Renee, and Magnolia from Louisiana for Eugene.

Most of the work is stem stitch for the outlines, with fill done in satin stitch. The apex of the roof at the center is done with Roumanian fill stitch, which was fun to experiment with. The crosses on the ceiling are Maltese cross stitch, which was a real brain bender of loops and weaving, but completely worth it imo.

I'll definitely be posting pictures when I finish the whole thing, but tbh I'll probably take a break and let my poor fingers rest lmao

addressing fair play

hey friends! there's been a lot of discussion lately about keeping the steal rules for tournaments fair and fun for everyone which is a concern that is near and dear to my heart. so let's talk about it!

first i want to reiterate that the purpose of the steal rules has ALWAYS been to inspire and motivate people to create art they're proud of for the things they love, not to maximize points. in that sense, the tournament has already been a huge success. but as we continue, i want to make some things really clear.

first, this is not a talent competition, and i welcome creators of all skill levels to participate. however, going forward, i will have to reserve the right to reject work that i deem inconsistent with the spirit of the tournament (as mentioned above).

in order to make sure we are all playing fair, let me outline a couple of things that you can do to be sure that your work is counted:

make sure your pieces are distinctly different. i understand that with rarepairs, there may not be many scenes to use, but shake it up to the very best of your ability. grabbing points is not the goal!

try not to spam post all at once. a couple posts back to back is fine, but keep it reasonable.

try not to post too close to the deadline. sometimes that IS just when things get done but please be respectful of my time if you have work saved up. ive had some great help but im one person receiving submissions very late at night, usually at the end of a work day.

remember that your work is valuable! as ive said before, there is realistically no number that can be placed on sincere and heartfelt creation. when the tournament is over, your work will still be here and our space will be better for it! my ask is that we all continue to be good sports while the game is running, win or lose. thanks for your help with these things 💕

It’s just that he doesn’t know what to tell Mummie in postcards, that’s all. Sid and I are getting on just fine. Sid’s cracking up, but I’ve been cracked up for years, myself. Maybe before the war ever touched me, but who’s to say? Don’t worry. Let Ed and Martha cheer you up. If I knew when I’d be coming home, I’d tell you. None of that, of course, ever makes it out of the pen, but he manages to scrawl a decent note leaned over the corner store countertop while Sid hunts for two bottles of Coca-Cola in the iceboxes.
