TWICE-THE-FURY ıı GRADY
The fight had hardly been that. They’d shot maybe two artillery, it was mostly the machine guns and the men who trailed the rumbling tanks that did the work. The hardest part was sitting patiently while listening to everything around him, waiting for the next call for him to load. It feels as though he spent more of the fight watching Bible’s foot as it bounce.
He’s more than please to climb out with the all clear, scrambling through the hatch seconds after Bible has slipped out himself. His leg still jumps and jitters, working out the anxiety that mirrored Grady’s own. They’d been warned about rumors of a Tiger. None in the tank had ever been so glad to realize the report was just that, a rumor. Grady settles back against the hatch, already digging into his pockets as he feels the tank slow. He sees quickly what had caught Gor’s attention. He grins, “sure there’s better ya can do ‘stead of some Lucky’s”. The sentence ends with a grunt as a hand cuffs his ear and Don’s voice raises over the engines before Grady can start up a fight properly with the Staff Sergeant.
“Hop up, we’ll see what we can do.”
Claire couldn’t help but grin at the comment floating through the engine noise,  resisting the urge to roll her eyes and offer a snarky response of her own. The staff sergeant had already handled the situation, and she wasn’t about to cause trouble for a crew that probably had weeks - if not months - left to spend together in a cramped space.
“Thanks, sarge.” She gave the man a nod before she pulled herself onto the tank, wincing as her aching muscles protested against the strain. The adrenaline of the fight had already left her, and now she was starting to feel every ache and bruise. But it was nothing she hadn’t handled before, knowing that the ache just meant that she was still lucky enough to be alive.

Her eyes scanned the crew as she settled down, a little unsteady at first as the tank roared to life again and continued down the road. It had been too long since she had been allowed on any kind of wheeled transport, and it was odd feeling an engine under her feet rather than just dirt.
“Ain’t much, but I might be able to dig up some Hershey’s if you’re lucky.” Eyes turned to the first man that had spoken as she held out the packet of Lucky’s for him to take. Well aware that none of the men crewing the tank would be cheering over a bar or two of chocolate. “Or maybe you’re after somethin’ more sound, like crackers?”

@twice-the-fury ıı GRADY
The tanks had arrived at the very moment Claire had been ready to give up. The fighting had been endless, and she could barely remember the last time she had slept, or how many men she had dragged off the battlefield to waiting transports.
The tanks had been their saving grace, breaking through the hedgerows and getting the Germans on the move for the first time in days. The rumours of a Tiger hiding somewhere within enemy territory was soon forgotten as men were able to rise out of their cramped foxholes and stretch their aching limbs.
Tanks were still roaring past as she moved down the line, checking that everyone was still as unwounded they had been just an hour ago when the tension in the air had almost been solid. The wounded had been evacuated as far down the road as they could, and most had already been picked up and transported to the closest aid station. However much she would have enjoyed a good meal and some rest, she knew that the aid station was her own next destination as well, if so only to make sure the men she had sent there had been patched up.

Eyes scanned the passing tanks as she came to a halt, giving herself a moment to breathe before she moved forward, waving her hands over her head to catch the attention of the crew of the nearest tank. A green monstrosity that had the word Fury painted along the side of the gun in white.
“Hey!” Her voice almost got lost among the roaring engines, but she knew she had caught their attention as the tank started to slow down. “Mind giving’ me a lift down to the aid station? Could do with one, been on my feet all night.” Digging through her pocket she soon found a relatively fresh packet of Lucky Strikes, which was raised in the air with the same revere as if it had been a delicate vase. “Ain’t got much to offer, but these might do?”

I recently read The Unwomanly Face Of War by Svetlana Alexievich, and despite some super heavy subjects, it’s probably one of my favourite war books I’ve read. It also gave me so much inspiration for Claire and her role as both a medic and a woman at war, and helped give me something to reference when it comes to some headcanons about her at war. So here’s some things that I can now say are actually legit parts of Claire’s time of war:
Her not having periods at all during the war, which was something multiple women talked about in the book. Their bodies just completely stopped having periods after a while, and for some of them they never resumed again post-war, which also resulted in many of them being unable to have children. So Claire probably doesn’t experience periods at all from like... 1942 and until she gets back home, and even there idk if it starts up again for her, because she’s already unable to have kids so...
Her being able to drag and/or carry men that are a lot larger than her without any real issues. Obviously she’s already pretty strong after having gone through the same kind of Airborne training as any of the men she serves with, but there’s women who talked about being able to carry men who weighed double their body weight during the war. A lot of it obviously has to do with adrenaline, but girls? Being stronger than they look? Yes please.
Generally people underestimating her until she proves what she’s capable of? Especially to begin with, seeing as she was only 19 when she volunteered for the Airborne, and 22 when she was sent to war to treat the wounded.

astrificare:
❝ oh. ❞ well, it ain’t the first time he’s misinterpreted what someone’s saying, and johnny’s sure it won’t be the last; he’s easily confused by things, and he needs them straightened out for him before they can make sense. it’s not that he doesn’t can’t get there — he’s not stupid, whatever people say — but it takes a little time. or he gets the wrong end of the stick. he’s not embarrassed about it, anymore; this is who johnny is, and he’s fine with it. the war changed him, sure, but it changed all of them. it’s just more obvious with him, is all.  ❝ i-i get confused sometimes. ❞
Tumblr media
one thing he isn’t confused about, though? you’ve got to find enjoyment in life, whatever form it takes. they’ve all seen some horrors in the last few years (even if johnny’s memories only haunt him in his dreams) and they’re all hurting so much. for him, for the band, music is all thy have left; he doesn’t know what he’d do if he couldn’t play, who he’d be without that. sitting at his drums is the only time johnny really feels like himself.  ❝ you wanna dance? c’mon, i promise i’ll go easy on you. ❞
A part of her almost felt guilty, despite being aware that she probably shouldn’t. None of it was either of their faults, and she knew much could be blamed on the war. But that still didn’t mean she didn’t feel guilty for not being clear enough, when there was no way she could have known his reaction.
Tumblr media
“It’s fine.” She tried to still the guilt with a weak smile and a nod, for a minute scrambling for the reassurance she had so easily been able to conjure up during the war. “I’m sorry.” Her voice was weaker at that, careful, the guilt over something that really was minuscule growing by the second.
Eyebrows rose in surprise at his offer, but it made the situation a little easier. Smile growing slightly as she shot him a surprised look.
“If ya promise not to blame me too much if I crush your toes, then why not? Can’t be that hard, can it?”

What was the inspiration behind Claire?
Send some anons!
[Ohh, um, this is a tricky one tbh? Because I kinda want to say other medics?? I mean, at the time of me making Claire and her original blog, I was rewatching Band Of Brothers, and I loved Doc Roe from the first time I saw the show. I was originally going to pick up him or Stephen Gould from Saints and Soldiers (which is one of my all time favourite war movies, together with the second one), but I was also tempted to make another OC, so I ended up doing Claire.
I had an idea for a character to begin with, but it didn’t feel right for her to just be a nurse or something, so I decided to slightly bend the rules and make her a combat medic. Not only because it worked for her character, but also because I wanted to explore what that might have been like for a woman, and because I wanted to write a medic in general. I’m also not the best at writing male characters (I try and I do okay, but I usually prefer female), so there was that too.
But yeah, I 100% got inspiration from my favourite medic (or corpsman) kids, together with the shows or movies they were in. Claire has obviously changed a lot through the years, and she’s very much not the same character that she was when I first created her, but the basis is the same, and I’m so happy to have my medic child!!]
