          “I know that.” The words came out of Hawke’s mouth a little harsher than intended, fueled by the weight of the pending decision that seemed to rest on his shoulders alone. He knew that Anders would stage protests if he chose anything but setting the girl free, but at the end of the day it was Hawke’s decision to make. He was the one who accepted the task of locating the missing mage and he was the one who had to be tied to her fate (and bear the consequences). Not for the first time Hawke wished he had never gone to Meredith’s office in the first place. Nothing good ever came of it - except for the slight chance of some poor mage having a chance to survive instead of being hunted and killed on sight by the Knight-Commander’s crazed templars. (And that’s precisely why Hawke kept going back).      Hawke looked back at the girl who stood a few feet away, looking every bit the lost soul that she was. She was shaking with the same fear that shone in her eyes; the fear of being caught and trapped. As vexing as finding her had been, convincing her to trust them had turned out surprisingly easy. Hawke didn’t want to think about what might have happened if they had been a moment to slow in proving they were here to help. Isabela was talking to her, doubtlessly saying inappropriate things to cheer her up, while Varric was doing his best to ensure her that everything would turn out alright. A bold promise, all things considered, and a painfully loyal one.      “But letting her go might not be the blessing you believe it to be.” Hawke continued, the harsh tone in his voice giving way to a much softer one. “Look at her, Anders. She is just a child. The incident that made her run was not a result of ill intent but a lack of control. She NEEDS someone who can help her study and master her magic. The Circle.. might be her best choice for the time being.” He raised a hand, trying to stop the onslaught of words that were likely to fall from Anders’ lips any moment now.      “Unless you have somewhere safe we can send her to, I say we bring her back to Meredith. She may be anything but a friend of mages, but she is not entirely unreasonable. She won’t harm the girl if she goes back willingly.. I hope.” The last two words were mumbled into Hawke’s beard, and hopefully remained unheard altogether.      Growing up a mage had made Hawke skeptical of templars and Meredith had not done anything to change that impression, but other than Anders he still had a fraction of hope left that the situation was not as dire as it seemed. The Circle was far from ideal, but he had no alternative at hand and exposing the world to untrained mages who were driven by fear and despair sounded like a plan doomed to end in catastrophe.      “What do you want me to do? Give her some coin and send her on her way? She will be dead within the week - or end up killing someone —–for real this time.”

“sending her to the circle IS a death sentence.” he urges, looking to him expectantly-- seemingly frustrated seeing as how anders has been saying the same shit for who knows how long at this point.  “have some SENSE-- if they catch wind of her-- of what she’s done, she’s as good as tranquil.”  he wants to grab hawke by the shoulders && shake him-- perhaps that’ll loosen whatever was wound too tightly in that brain of his.  because how could hawke even consider sending her there?  after everything anders has told him?  it was almost an insult to the mage as he stared at hawke gape-mouthed and all.

“look, i know some refugees she can stay with- trust worthy folks that can keep her safe && off the streets.  i’ll set her up with them, we don’t need to take her to the circle.”

he’s desperate, that much is certain-- but how could he not be?  for in every terrified mages eyes, in every desperate plea he saw himself, he saw the mirror image of who he used to be.  simply a frightened soul that wanted the taste of hope that everyone else was receiving-- && why?  because mages were abominations, because they held powers that no one but them understood-- it wasn’t fair to be judged based off of something that was out of everyones control.
