nothing hits like a tennis rivalry because its an independent sport. theres no team to back you up and no franchise history to go off of it’s just you and the person whipping balls at you a hundred km an hour. the only thing that other sports rivalries (sometimes, depending) have is the ability to beat each other up about it (mostly hockey but fights do also break out in other sports like basketball and baseball). but then again, the contactless framework of tennis is part of what makes it so delicious. you hate this person you can never touch except to shake their hand after one of you loses

my favorite rybakina iceberg moment is the fact that she grew up doing figure skating but had to switch to tennis due to being too tall

like in another universe, figure skater rybakina is a thing. she might have been olympics 2018 gold medalist elena rybakina and not wimbledon 2022 champion elena rybakina. this is fascinating to me to find out not just because i’m a big skating fan, but i’ve always thought she had that skater build if it wasn’t for her height, and she moves with the gracefulness of a skater if that makes sense
