you ever latch onto a headcanon so hard that u feel like it's just canon ? bc that's how i feel about a younger colin having to witness his father dying and be around the age where he wouldn't really be able to sit with it properly bc he likely would have gotten shipped off to eaton. like he probably had 2 seconds to mourn before going to school and not having anyone to really talk to about it. would have needed to just move on and deal with it rather than have his family surrounding him and mourning properly and it all kind of makes sense bc whenever colin feels stuck or purposeless or just terrible in general , he leaves and travels in search of something that makes sense to him bc that's the only way he's really learned how to cope.
