While I was gone, I found an animation app that fits my brain (flipaclip)
And so I used it to animate some clips from my favorite podcast, Says Who?

Chickenfox and Purrie (Purry? I've never written it in the singular. Hm) for June ArtSnacks challenge!

I forgot to review the individual May ArtSnacks products! General's Cedar Pointe - No. 1 extra soft - I didn't really notice anything special about this pencil, but the eraser works well. It's on standby for light sketching. KRINK K-90 Paint Marker - Oooh this is an interesting one! I like the pump action and the thick ink, but it's REALLY hard to control the flow, especially with the smaller pieces I usually work on. The paint is really thick and has a pleasant dimensionality even when dry. I found it hard to work over it, it's a finishing touch... Which sucks if you get everything else to perfection and then splot the Krink where you don't want it. Kuretake Brush2o Long - I have plenty of these already, so I wasn't too excited to see this, and I'm still annoyed that it was labeled a "New Product"... But I get it. I would never have used one of my water brushes for ink, and that was a new one! I saw someone using water brushes prefilled with ink washes at ECCC and was excited by the prospect of trying that (I used to work almost exclusively in ink washes) but I never thought to try it with CRAZY INK: FW Neon Acrylic Ink (Daler-Rowney) - I got fluorescent yellow. I didn't know what to do with fluorescent yellow. I thought I would never USE fluorescent yellow. I put it in my brush with some water and tried it, and it was fun! I've used it a little on some other things. I really REALLY love what happens to it under colored LED lights, and I think this one bottle will last quite a while... If I hadn't left the lid loose overnight. It has a few dry chunks in it now but still works fine and plenty is unaffected, but I have to look out for clumps later (whoops. Acrylic.) It was a hard box for the ArtSnacks challenge, but it grew on me. Weirdly, the thing I was most annoyed by has become part of my favorite from this box, and the cool thing is what intimidates me. I need to try some bigger stuff with the KRINK. It was fun but limiting.

June ArtSnacks arrived! Best one yet, I have no complaints this time! Colors I like, nothing I’ve ever used before, useful for the kind of stuff I like to do… Perfect!
Denik Custom mini sketchbook - so cute! Paper’s good, cover is very nice, love the art on it! A little small for what I use sketchbooks for but it’s so cute and just the right size for ArtSnacks noodling. And now I know about Denik. General’s Layout pencil - great tone range, easy to use, still just a pencil but I’m interested to try some storyboarding with it, since that’s what it’s supposedly good at. Kuretake No. 7 Brush - at first I was like, “oh man, more Kuretake stuff, how original”, but it is actually pretty great! It came with two ink cartridges, the second one is stored in the body. I like that, very clever! The ink isn’t waterproof at all, but has nice line variation. I could see mixing this in with my favorite (also Kuretake) Zig CocoIro pens (none of these are waterproof though, kindof bad for watercoloring…) The CocoIro is pretty short and stout, this long thin pen is a nice feel contrast to it, we’ll see which I end up using more. Caran d'Ache Fibralo brush marker - I love me some brush markers, and I’ve never seen this brand before! I got a really nice magenta-y color. The brush isn’t as brushy as some (Kuretake Clean Color Real Brush wins that one), but the ink consistency is solid and adding water blends it out nicely (I waterbrushed all over my sample lines above) fun fun! Spectra AD marker - oh heck yes. I use AD markers at work and wish I had certain colors at home… But they’re so expensive and smelly. I didn’t know they had a new product coming out! I like it, and I got a perfect red (Spice) for chickenfoxing! It’s way less stinky than your typical AD, and bleeds a little less (but still bleeds- it’s what AD does, I’m used to it.) I waterbrushed on it as well and nothing happened, which is good! *Something* in my current toolbox needs to not be affected by water!
This is what I was hoping for when I subscribed to ArtSnacks; new products I don’t know about and an assortment that gets me all excited to art! I was ready to give up if this box was wishy-washy (imo) like the last 2, but it really stepped up!

I was ready to be disappointed by the May ArtSnacks (I already own several Kuretake water brushes) but then it was kindof fun…
And THEN, I put it under one of our color-changing LED lights! (Not a phone filter)
Fluorescent Yellow: YOW!

I also did a cumulative ArtSnacks with both boxes I've received so far (April and May) Yes, I used both pencils. Not being a huge pencil-user, I felt no appreciable difference.

But at least I'm trying the new one with ink (yellow) in the barrel, I've never done THAT before.

"New"? The Kuretake water brush? I've had the exact same ones for like 2 years... Does "new" mean new to the ArtSnacks product cycle or new to the art supply market?

There’s TWO new products in the May box.
Here’s a peek at one of them.
Solve the mystery of the May box by subscribing before April 23rd.

I got my first ArtSnacks box (April 2016) the other day and I figure I should review it! So… To be honest I’m disappointed. Not in the individual supplies, really, but the overall package. I’m REALLY into brushy pens at the moment, so the 3 tapered pens are all right up my alley (more on that later) but the COLORS. I’m sorry, I thought this box was CURATED. In all my poking around I never got that everyone gets different colors, and I really feel like I got the bottom of the barrel on that, or I got the bottom of someone’s attention to detail. Individually these are all fine colors, but together they’re frikkin awful. I want to do an #ArtSnacksChallenge but these are really uninspiring colors that don’t play nicely together at all. I feel a little cheated seeing the awesome colors everyone else got to play with. But anyway. Hopefully this isn’t a trend with all my future boxes.
Koi Coloring Brush Pen- (Light Cool Grey) - nice feel, lovely grey for shading, actually gets darker with multiple layers. The tip is resilient so far but soft enough for a varying line. Nice. Like everything else by Sakura, it’s solid but not really extraordinary.
Ironlak Strikers tri-grip twin marker- (G011T- meadow green?) - never heard of this brand but love the feel of this marker in my hand. Not as overpowering as Prismacolor markers, longer barrel than my Blick markers. Nothing super exciting about the ink- it’s a marker. Apparently it’s refillable? The marker body is really nice, I kindof want more of them just to see if other colors make me love it more. I WANT to love it more. This green leans blue and I have so few good GREEN greens, natural greens, so it’s not filling any needs for me yet.
Le Plume fine brush - (Maize) - like the Koi, good tip, flexible but pops back into form after applying pressure. It has a distinct “wet” application, it looks watery and sinks into the paper, almost looks like it’s going to leave wetness stains but then dries into a nice color. Going to bet it’s not great for blending colors.
Kuretake Metallic brush pen- (Blue) - so here’s the thing: I use Kuretake water brushes for my watercoloring sometimes (and I LOVE my new Zig/CocoIro), but I prefer my Koi water brushes. I don’t like the thin, long barrel as much I guess? But on this it kindof works. I’ve also used prefilled watercolor brush pens before and just wasn’t impressed. Changing colors is such a pain when you have to uncap and cap the brushes all the time. So I’m not sure how much play this one will get. It’s an unrealistic, oversaturated blue and the “metallic” doesn’t really come through. If it had been gold or silver or copper I could find more applications for it but it’s blue and not really that shiny at all. I notice this happens a lot with “vibrant” metallic colors just across the board, even Gellyrolls. Kudos for being really brushy and easy to control though, and being the most interesting color in the box.
Faber-Castell jumbo pencil- I don’t use wood pencils a lot, but this one has a nice feel to it. Lays down nice soft graphite. Not sure how the heck I’m going to sharpen it. Not bad. Definitely not something I would have ever bought on my own. Honestly will probably end up with my old architecture school pencils until someone I know needs them for an art class.
So that’s it! Maybe a Challenge will come to me soon, and I’ll post it. Still… Not sure what to think about the box yet. They didn’t really do any of these products justice with this selection, as far as I’m concerned. @artsnacksblog I guess? Hi! Please send me better colors next time! Not so many cool tones and one warm one! And light values with one bright!
