was just reading up on "Collective Shout" and their recent escapades

i feel like now more than ever its over for video games. with the recent astronomical layoffs and cancelations at xbox and all over the gaming industry, and now a fascist organisation is trying and succeding at mass censorship on two major game platforms, that being steam and itch . io, and especially with itch . io being an indie platform its really bad news to hear that creators are having their work erased.

like many other things in recent history, its impossible to not see how this will lead to and already is just facism. while the current victims of censorship are mainly NSFW creators, which i dont think really matters, art is art after all, it certainly wont take long for the bar to be raised to the point of extremes.

whenever i get upset about the state of video games lately i always remeber that kojima exists, and while it does give me some reprieve or hope for the future of games i think kojima isnt really a factor at all. kojima is able to make games now because he was a part of the Ps1/Ps2 renaissance. much like the fall of the western in the 60s/70s, everyone and anyone was getting green lit to make something. that is why we had so many radical and crazy games that would go on to shape the current modern era of games. in my eyes kojima is the scorsese of the video game world. he got his big break during that renaissance period and has held onto his popularity through his skill and passion. so even now if scorsese says he wants to make a film, or if kojima says he wants to make a game, he does, like you cant deny a master of the craft. so its for that reason that i feel kojimas success dosent really hold much hope for the rest of the industry. kojima can do what he wants and thats a good thing, but its because he is a safe bet, when you hear there is a new kojima game, or a new scorsese movie, everyone goes and checks it out and it is almost always spectacular, so studios can bank on whatever crazy idea because the name is all you need to sell units.

whereas when it comes to AA and indie developers who also have amazing ideas and could be the next best thing and revolutionize video games, they dont get funded or any sort of exposure because its not a safe bet, you may end up putting loads of money into funding a crazy new idea that is good but its not what the people want so no one plays it, or it goes the other direction where so called "gamers" cannibalise the very industry they claim to be so fond of by review bombing and denouncing games before theyve even released for really stupid reasons, usually coming back to them just being fascists. so its impossible for the industry to progress when the people that have the money dont put it anywhere fruitful. there are some cases when a smaller studio does make something good and it gets recognition but more often than not those studios get bought up by the likes of microsoft and then disolved without even getting a second chance.

it would probably help if video games were more widely recognised as the artform that it is

i think we really do need a second renaissance where people just start handing out money to any one with a decent idea and seeing what sticks
