Tips for writing with mental illness:

Pinterest is a legitimate way to become inspired or to research your story. One of my WIPs is partially from finding aesthetics I wanted to write about.

Bullet points and even asking yourself questions in the document is fine. Ex: "Do I want X to climb up the cliff or try to go get help?"

Writing anything, even if it's not related to your WIP, is fine. It's momentum.

Creating playlists is also a good source of inspiration and brainstorming. A lot of plot points from my current WIP were brainstormed during songs that inspired my creative juices.

actually, I don't know how anyone else would apply this to their writing process, but something that's been working really well for me (<- adhd, focus issues) recently is writing at the piano so I can alternate between writing and practicing? I don't know, there's just something about writing a few lines/paragraphs/whatever until writing starts to feel unbearable, switching to the sequence I'm practicing and playing it through a few times (while the next lines simmer in the back of my mind), and then moving back to the writing when I'm ready that's kept me much happier and engaged than staring into space or attempting to muscle through?

again, not sure how this applies to people who don't play the piano exactly, unless there's maybe a similar activity that's not too engaging that you can switch in and out of easily? felt worth sharing, though

Did you know that JRR Tolkien wrote an unpublished epilogue to Lord of the Rings? It's achingly, beautifully wistful in the way that only Lord of the Rings is. I revisited it recently because I'm guesting on my friends' LOTR podcast, and THAT reminded me that I drew a comic of the epilogue back in 2021 (all text is entirely canon). Anyway I thought folks on this website might enjoy it!

I think the weirdest form of fatphobia I keep bumping into is writers suddenly becoming deeply concerned with physical realism when a fat character is involved even in contexts where everybody's physical capabilities are explicitly bullshit. "They're fat, it wouldn't make sense for them to have super speed" and it would make sense for the 98-pound twink to be able to run at Mach Fuck? That's something skinny people can do in real life, is it?

Whenever the history of video game consoles comes up on this blog, folks tend to be surprised by remarks like describing the PS2 as "sixth generation" – like, if the PS2 was already six generations deep, what the fuck did the other five look like? The idea that home video game consoles have been around since the early 1970s is unexpected to many, and I 100% encourage anybody with an interest in the medium to read up on those early consoles, not only because knowing your history is handy, but because they were often pretty fantastic aesthetically. Like, look at this thing:

This is a Magnavox Odyssey from 1972. I love the juxtaposition of sterile white plastic, faux leather texture, and artificial wood grain – it's like it can't decide whether it wants to be a Star Trek prop or a footrest. However, I personally regard 1977's Coleco Telstar Arcade as the pinnacle of the form, because... well:
