open to suggestions btw, what is the best "control group" series to use as something to contrast against how ambiguous the classification of super mario games is? I'm specifically looking for something that has as many of these properties as possible:

it's "the mainline series" of a media franchise where not all media in that franchise is part of that series

both the series and the larger franchise it's part of are very well known

the mainline series is long-running

there are at least twice as many non-mainline works in the franchise as there are entries in the mainline series

the non-mainline works include things that are very similar to mainline installments in several ways

(crucially) it is not ambiguous or controversial what works the mainline series consists of. every notable up-to-date source that lists the installments in the series (while distinguishing the series from the larger franchise the series is part of) includes the same exact things on the list

naruto is such a weird fucking show. kishimoto inexplicably established that the hidden villages are actually small mercenary units run for the benefit of war lords and then literally never addresses it. they have casual death matches to determine who will graduate to a level 2 mercenary and everyone is like This Is Fine. it’s like if the hunger games was about katniss wanting to become the mayor of district 12 and every other aspect of their world remains virtually unchanged.
