after the incident!AU

is an alternative universe in which katzuki bakugo almost killed izuku midorya, who is now missing his right arm and leg, and has to learn to live with his disability, while bakugo learns to live with the responsibility and aftermath of almost ending a life. in this universe izuku didnt forgive him for everything that happened, and the two dont talk anymore.

the story takes part a little over a year after this incident, during finals season at UA college.

its not the same as it was: izukus part of the story is focused on recovery, learning to adapt, creating new dreams, found family and friendship (very fluffy)

beat down: katzukis part of the story is focused on sorrow, dealing with mental health issues and post traumatic stress disorder, chasing his dream, and learning to live and to trust people again (very angsty)

the one thing i find really interesting, that the fandom seems to love to ignore is that just like Shoto Todoroki, Katzuki Bakugo also comes from an abusive household, but unlike shoto, who reflected on his and his fathers actions, chose to not continue the cycle of abuse, to be nothing like him and to become the hand of kindness itself instead, bakugo is the poster child of the abused turning out exactly like their abuser, being just as cruel and violent and ruining multiple lives, including his own in the process. which, i cannot stress enough, does does not excuse the harm hes done, but shouldnt be blamed on him alone.

bakugo is what shoto could have ended up like, and i think thats an interesting and important conversation to be had.

he does say that he was beaten as a kid, presumably by his mother, and that thats the normal thing to do when kids missbehave which is the same that happened to todoroki at least from his fathers side) and his behaviour is a lot like hers, and i think its clear that hes taking his own problems out on midorya, agression creates agression and whatnot

one of my writing and storytelling pet peeves is an emotionally and or physically abused character, especially a child, being like, totally fine. what do you mean your family neglected, emotionally abused and isolated you for ten years of your life, but when you go to boarding school everything is fine? what do you mean youre making friends like a normal person? what do you mean your childhood bully physically and mentally abused you for years and youre fine? everything is fine?

abuse has to have consequences. abuse always has some sort of consequence and if you decide to include it in your story, you have to include the consequences. you have to critically engage with your work. abused kids, especially when they dont get help by adults around them dont turn out fine. theyre scared, depressed, socially anxious, set back in their social skills. bullying and harassment can and will cause severe mental disorders like PTSD, and you, as a writer, need to take them serious if you want me to take the story youre telling serious.
