Surprisingly, he actually cared about what happened to Sabina throughout all of this. She was currently just a beacon for them all to keep in contact with each other, but he could only imagine it was taking a toll on her. This whole battle was taking a toll on all of them physically. Her mental though? It was sure to be suffering to an extent. Once he caught her attention, a hand gently rested on her shoulder. "How are you feeling? I'm positive you haven't taken a break yet." Not that they could afford to have her take one anyway

Kirigan had been...ecstatic about the change in their relationship. When they had first met, it had been nothing but disdain thrown his way and a smug smirk hers. But he'd been useful. She had seen him as someone to be trusted even though he was a demon. Maybe nothing should have happened between them. That would've been the logical thing to do. Hell, that was what she had tried to do after that one day in Mystery Ink. where everything had changed for them. She had wanted to pretend it hadn't happened and of course Kirigan hadn't wanted the same. Sanem was always throwing him off though. If he so much as rejected a comment made or any closeness between them, he would see the look in her eyes. It was just exhausting, the constant back and forth and push and pull that they kept doing. He hadn't expected her to come to his place before all of this though. Just as he was sure she hadn't expected him to come to hers when she was sick. But here they were. Sanem and Kirigan. And here she was clutching onto him as if he was going to go out there and die if she let go. His hands gripped her own in his, a smirk coming upon his lips. "Come on, Sanem, of course I promise. I've got something to come back to now." He pressed his forehead to hers. "You won't lose me. You just got me," he joked.
Tumblr media
For too long, Sanem had allowed her life to be dictated by too many factors. She had allowed her loss to propel her forward, to use it against the supernatural that had viewed humans as lesser, as prey. It had been these thoughts, these dedications that had kept her distanced from Kirigan. And it seemed to have taken a war to truly open her eyes. She only prayed that she wasn't too late. His words easily relieved some of the tension that rooted itself in her shoulders, even more so when his arm wrapped around them. There was a comfort in him, one that she hadn't realized how badly she needed. Her hands lifted, curled fingers into the fabric of his shirt, "I'm alright." In a sense of the word, that is. She couldn't yet tell him about what had been done, less she allow it too much space within her thoughts. "This is worse than I ever thought it could be," she relented, her gaze focused so acutely upon him. Kirigan was smart, but more importantly, his survival instinct was better than most that had found their way to the battlefield. "Death is not taking its victims, people are being turned into spore... things. I need you to promise me, really promise me, that you'll do everything you can to survive out there." Because she couldn't ask him to stay with her, even if she knew that he would. They needed everyone, even if she would spend every moment worrying about him.

They were basically married now in Kirigan's head. She had made a grand declaration to him and he could only stand there and hope that the both of them made it out of this alive. They would though. Sanem didn't go down easily and neither did he. Together, they could get through this. The problem was that she was here doing all this medical shit and he was out there on the field. Thankfully, she had given him some extra precautions, but that didn't stop him from hoping she was okay every single second. When he saw her standing there, it felt like the sigh of relief she'd breathed had entered his lungs and caused him to do the same. "Yeah, I'm alright." His arm wrapped around her shoulders, a kiss placed to her temple as he did. "You're alright?"

where. outside the medical tent who. @hellfirekirigan
For the most part, Sanem's expertise had been required elsewhere. She had not been able to make it to the medical tents, to offer support in treating and dressing any wounds. At least, not until the fighting had ceased for the night. The base camp had been established, and those with wounds were brought into the various tents that had been set up. It was where she had gone to, when she couldn't handle simply sitting around, waiting for the next onslaught to begin. Blood had soaked into areas of her clothes, and exhaustion etched itself into her features when she finally stepped out from the tent. The cool night air was appreciated, though it hardly stopped her thoughts from running rampant, her head from spinning. That is, until she saw him, and the sigh of relief that left her was unlike what she had anticipated. "You're alright?" It was all that she could say, or do, for she seemed frozen to the spot.

where. kirigan's messy home who. @hellfirekirigan notes. this is just a lil pre-battle blurb for them, kiss kiss
The preparations within the Eye had called the entirety of her attention, of her focus. Lives depended upon the technology that she and her team could produce and manufacture. And so, Sanem had practically been sleeping within the Labyrinth. Seemingly only leaving when she needed to make a visit to the Outpost, or when the coffee produced within the organization simply did not cut it. Her mind had primarily focused upon what she could construct for the soldiers, for those that had aligned themselves with the Senate, and with the Eye.
Yet, her conversation with Ephraim had circulated within her mind, beneath the seemingly constant worry. He had asked what she would do, if she had been given the command, once it was all over. She could have said they would go back to what they had always done, to hunt those that were not human. But a part of her had pushed through, had made itself known to herself. The part that wanted something different. For herself, for the life that had never truly been hers. And a part of that difference landed with an individual that she had not foreseen for herself.
For a moment, as she stood on the doorstep, before Kirigan had come to the door, Sanem had wondered if this were a bad idea. She did not have them often, or if at all. But perhaps that had become different, when it came to him. She had been foolish with their association. She had allowed him to see her in ways that he never should have. He was a demon, after all, an abomination that had taken over the body of some innocent human. And she was a scientist, a figure head for the humans to ensure their continued survival.
Yet, when the door finally opened, when Kirigan stood before her, she felt like nothing more than a woman who was in way over her head. That had allowed a simple infatuation to become something so much more. And perhaps she couldn't deny it any longer, especially with what was just upon the horizon. "I don't have much time," she stated immediately, a glimpse into how nervous she was. She had not done anything such as this in a long time, and the last time she had, it had not ended well.
"I brought you some things, from the Eye. I don't know what you will want to use, if any of it," she started, seemingly growing more nervous by the second. Kirigan had not been silent with his want, with his interest since the day they had started this partnership. Since he had begun to bring her creatures, and she had threatened him with experimentation. She had been the one to deny it, over and over again, even after the many times she had entangled herself with him. "I also ---," she stopped short, however, teeth worrying the inside of her cheek.
What if it were not as she believed it to be? What if Kirigan had only said those things to keep her from strapping him to her table? Perhaps it had all been fabricated within her own mind, strengthened by some small part of her that wanted him too. "I just ---," her words cut off again, currently a poor representation of how sure she had always been in her life. From the days she had spent at the Eye as a child, to the university halls as a teenager, to the career she had built for herself within the Labyrinth. But when it came to this moment, she was hardly sure of herself.
"I need you to be safe," she finally confessed, the truth laced upon each of her words. "I can't lose you either, alright?" That was what he had been trying to tell her, hadn't it? When he had come into her home, while she had been sick from the plague? He had turned it into a joke, but Sanem had been smart enough to figure it out. To know what he had wanted to say, but hadn't been able to. Now she could say it for the both of them. "I've spent too long pushing you away, but I don't want to anymore. However this bloodshed plays out, I want to be standing at the end with you." That is, if she made it through the bloodshed, if he made it through. And if she did not have to answer for the crimes that she committed, as Dominic had placed upon her.
Tumblr media
"I want you to be by my side when this is all done, just as you are." And as the words slipped from her tongue, before the uncertainty could manifest itself any more, she stepped forward. Her fingers curled into his shirt, drew him closer until she could reach up to press her lips against his. It was not a kiss of hunger, nor of frivolous need or want. It was a kiss of promise, for what would come when the dust had settled over Rome.
END.

Kirigan wasn't ever sure where her mind was at. It was always a mystery to him. One second, she didn't mind kissing him. Well, they'd done more than kiss in that tattoo shop, but that point was still there. Regardless, in the next second, she was always saying how it would never happen again and they couldn't have a repeat and blah blah blah. Then, when he pushed her away from him, she was still here pulling him back in. The abomination was starting to get whiplash because of her. Did he mind? Definitely not. Sanem could probably step on him over and over again and he would still want to be around her. It was borderline pathetic of him, but he was convinced it was just normal. Wasn't it? It seemed like every demon he knew that was with someone had this strange sort-of infatuation with said person. Not that he was even with Sanem in the first place. It was a very long process to getting to that point for them, but the way her hand had pressed against his cheek made him think that maybe it wasn't. Then the words that left her mouth took it even further. Kirigan being Kirigan though, he couldn't help the smirk that lifted onto his mouth. "Oh, Sanem, now I know you're sick," he joked as his hand pressed to hers on his cheek. Then he pulled it away, but he didn't let go. Instead, he let his fingers intertwine with her own. "What are you doing to me?"
Tumblr media
The consideration to his words still circled in her head, of the fact that she had not wanted to acknowledge it. The host body that he had chosen, that he continued to hang on to. She wondered if he would have, given it up in favor of another, if she had made a comment. If she had voiced some form of dislike to it. There was none, dislike that is, which had certainly made things that much more difficult for her. And perhaps that is why she had not given him the compliments that he wanted, that always found themselves on the tip of her tongue. Even now, she could have told him, could have relented to those thoughts that swirled in her mind. Instead, she focused on those devilish features, listened to the new words that slipped from his tongue. He couldn't... what? Watch her die, lose her? It seemed whatever it had been on the tip of his own tongue strayed too far into the truth, into a weakness that they both seemed to have for each other. Yet neither of them willing to give in to. At least, not yet. There was a hesitation at first, before her hand lifted from its place on the couch. Until she could rest it on his cheek, warm even despite the fever that held her in its grip. "I would be," she breathed, as she drew his face up. Her gaze flitted across his features, as if she were looking for his immediate reaction. "Devastated," she furthered, almost surprised by her own admission.

Sanem was an interesting creature to him. Never mind the fact that she was human. She was just different from everyone else, someone he deemed worthy of the time he spent trying to woo her. Kirigan didn't often do such a thing to be honest. A lot of the time he spent on his own was spent finding people that wouldn't bother to keep in contact because he himself didn't want to keep in contact. Really, the only thing that had come from all of that was the fact that he now had a son, but Jonah was definitely inch resting enough so he didn't mind keeping the kid around. Anyway, the point of all that was that Kirigan had never spent this much time around one person before. Whatever Sanem had that drew him in, he wished he knew what it was so that he could let it go. Instead, he was always here waiting for her to realize that she wanted him just as much as he wanted her. It was embarrassing of him to be pining as much as he was though. The abomination had gone through years and years of suffering in that flaming tomb within the inferno and this alone seemed like his biggest battle yet. "Well, I would've thought. You just don't want to acknowledge it." He kept a close eye on her as she shifted, her eyes meeting his own shortly after. A shallow breath fell from his lips as his hands shifted to rest at her sides on the couch. "I don't know how to do all of that so no. I'm just making sure you don't die on me." He eyed her for a moment and then dropped his head slightly. "I can't..." lose you. That's how he should have phrased it. No, instead he said the opposite. "I just know you would be absolutely devastated if you never saw me again. Crushed, even."
Tumblr media
Sanem did not like being sick. She did not enjoy being laid up in bed while others were suffering. If she had been capable of standing for more than a few moments, she would have already been in her lab. She would have been the one producing the vaccine necessary for the rest of the city. Instead, she had succumbed to the symptoms, and seemingly found herself with Kirigan as her 'doctor'. A soft smile touched the edges of her lips as the bottle was placed within her hand. Though it was a small gesture, there was something more hidden within it. Something that Sanem hadn't allowed her thoughts to linger upon. "Who would have thought my opinion mattered so much," she mused as her gaze focused on the bottle, or rather, anywhere but upon him. Reminders of the latest party slipped through her conscious, of the delight she'd felt upon seeing Kirigan. And the tryst they had once more had within the shadows. It couldn't keep happening, and yet, despite her assertion, it seemed to continue to. Despite the protests of her body, Sanem shifted until she was more properly sat before him, with her gaze finally upon his features. The bottle was more or less forgotten, though it still found itself within her grasp. "Is that why you've stayed then? To take care of me? Nurse me back to health?" Though a teasing smile found its way to her lips, her tone held another emotion. Trusting any supernatural had not come easily to Sanem, and even now, she wondered if there was something else there.

If there was one person Kirigan didn't even bother to ask to be a marshal, it was absolutely Marius. They barely had a friendship as it was so he didn't expect anything from the other abomination except for probably an insult or two. And he usually brushed those off fairly easily considering he simply didn't care. Alas, here they still stood. Kirigan didn't work at Mystery Ink anymore, but he had been on his way there to actually get another tattoo. Ninety percent of the time, that meant the other demon was doing the same. "Look what the cat dragged in. Still looking like a sheet of fucking cardboard, I see."

Kirigan had never expected to be on the Senate so his thought process in any of those meetings was to simply listen and pipe in when he felt he needed to say something. In all honesty, his dislike of demons made his position questionable. The Eye had intended for him to get information and they only ended up getting positions for themselves. His job here was done and yet...he was still here. Maybe he would really have to look into getting some marshals sooner rather than later. The few friends he did have that were demons were on the opposite side though so that was proving to be more difficult than it was worth. Nevertheless, it seemed he was always bumping into Theo in this damn Forum. He lifted his head in greeting. "Theo." He stopped next to the vampire. "You have very strong opinions in there. I'm starting to think I'm slacking." He was slacking and he was sure the vampire would say the same.

“Once they get a taste, can’t get rid of them.” It’s a tease, appearing self-conceited for a moment for the bit before a devil’s grin takes over and she drops the act. She was surprised to see a demon in the Roman forum where the Senate meetings took place. He imagined he felt the same with her presence and these days, she was trying to figure that out herself. She might have chained herself to the true devil, worse than all the demons that roamed Rome but even she wasn’t heartless enough to abandon Cloe during such a high stress and anxiety time. “How ya’ been?” The last time she had met him, she had took his hand and painted a scene out of his life. Much could be hidden and used in the memories that were suppressed.
Tumblr media
“Oh, of course. I’m sure you’re batting them away without lifting a finger.” Halfbloods, demons. They were both the same, he guessed. Both species had been forced to work to get their seat on the Senate. Halfbloods more than demons really. Kirigan had just gotten lucky enough to be affiliated with the Eye. Now he wasn’t so sure why he was here if they now had their nice and comfy seats. The power was nice though so he wouldn’t really say anything about it. The more time he got to spend with Sanem, the better. He also wouldn’t say anything about that either. Nevertheless, he thought maybe Sabina could help him with something. If anyone could, he felt like she would be able to. Then again, he wasn’t sure how her power worked. “Well, there’s a war in our midst so...you know.” His brows furrowed for a moment. “I’ve got a question for you though. This memory thing of yours...can you see memories I can’t see myself?”

Kirigan looked around the shop for a moment and then back at Jonah. "How many fucking employees do you have here at a damn...remedy shop?" That's what this was, right? To be honest, he had never been to one before other than to come check on Jonah half the time. Which always was more difficult than it was worth, but this was his child after all. He couldn't be surprised that he would be annoyed by someone that came from his damn demon semen. Damn him for not wrapping it up properly.
And then, of course, Jonah decided to bring up that whole war effort thing that he was involved in now because he was on the Senate. If it was up to him, he probably would have fled town. After making sure Sanem and his son made it out alive. That just meant he'd have to stay throughout the entire thing though. Kirigan let out a very long sigh. "I'm not worried. You clearly can handle yourself. You have the best parts of me after all," he stated with a hand to his chest and a smile. "Don't be stupid though."
Tumblr media
hellfirekirigan:
Jonah never had any manners, but Kirigan couldn’t really blame him. The demon barely had any of his own. It had taken him quite a while to even come to terms with the fact that he could like anyone on a level that was more than just a night with them. He guessed that was how this damn cambion had come about. Maybe he should’ve wrapped it up better than he did. Not that he really had a problem with Jonah in the slightest. Kid was more like him than he liked to admit. Starting with the manners. He didn’t really expect the halfblood to treat him with any sort of respect though. Even if Kirigan had been around during his childhood, he was sure the other would’ve turned out exactly the same.
The only reason he ever visited this place was to make sure his son hadn’t bit the dust yet. It would take a lot for that to happen, but Kirigan was always making sure. Thank Astaroth he had passed down that regenerative healing. Then again, maybe not. They’d be stuck together forever that way and it barely seemed like Jonah wanted him around in the first place. “You talk to all of your customers like that?” He looked around the shop and then back outside at the rain. There were sick people all over the place. “What the hell are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be literally anywhere else?”
Tumblr media
Jonah didn’t answer immediately, finishing up the straightening of a few signs before he turned to face the demon. “More than half of the city is dying,” he said nonchalantly, fiddling with the inventory checklist now in his hands again. “And all the employees called in sick so I get to catch up and paid double. Where else would I be?” There was an edge of sarcasm, only amplified by the dull look in his eyes.
But then he exhaled slow and nodded. “Ooor you heard about me signing up for the little thing that the Senate and The Eye have got going on in a few weeks?” He smiled without humor then, knowing it was very unlikely his father had heard anything about any halfbloods getting involved besides the Senator Cloe herself and her obvious Marshals. “No need to be worried old man.” He headed towards the checkout area nearby.

Kirigan couldn't say he was surprised by her response. Given their usual relationship, or lack thereof, he always expected an insult to be slung his way. Wasn't that how this worked? He annoyed her and she took the bait every single time. This moment was different though. The abomination had taken the time to be nice to her because she was sick. The last thing he needed was her remembering him being a nuisance while she was on her deathbed and deciding to take time out of her day to experiment on him. Not that he would mind. It would actually be kind of hot. That was something for another day though. Maybe he would actually recommend that to her. Why was he even thinking about that right now? He had to focus. Holding the bottle out to her, he placed it in her hand. "You wound me, Sanem. Now I need to find a new body until you think it's good enough." That was a half-joke, but he would actually do that. However, he knew that she at least liked this one a bit so he'd keep it for a little longer. "Well, I really came to annoy you. Imagine my surprise to see you sick and in need of assistance from yours truly. I know, I know. I'm a great person. Contrary to popular belief about us abominations."

Whatever this plague was that had reared its ugly head on Rome had seemed to skip him entirely. It probably had to do with the fact that Kirigan was very much dead. Even if he had gotten sick, he was sure it wouldn’t have lasted that long. The Eye seemed to be preparing vaccines very quickly and he was sure Sanem would be one of the first to get one. For now though? Well, she looked like she had one foot in the grave. That was perhaps the only reason he was allowed into her home. He expected her to kick him out as soon as she was feeling even the slightest bit better. Until then, he would make sure she wasn’t actually dying. A hand lifted to her forehead as he used his telekinesis to grab the bottle of water off the counter to bring it into his hand. “I would say you look like shit, but you somehow still look fucking great.” There was the smallest grin on his face that dissipated quickly at the actual sight of her. As much as he didn’t want to care, he did and he was going to make sure she wasn’t suffering too much. It was the least he could do for someone he cared too damn much for.
-
Tumblr media
The sickness had set in unexpectedly, especially given the resources that she had at her disposal at all times. Vampire blood, synthetic blood, vaccines for nearly every flu, cold or infection that any human could contract. Perhaps that is why she wasn’t in the least bit worried, for she had already enlisted those that had yet to show symptoms to manufacture the vaccine in record time. Once even the first batch had been completed, it would be on her doorstep so that she could return to work. So that she could be administering what was needed, and determining the best way to keep others from getting sick in the first place. What she had not expected was Kirigan on her doorstep. She hadn’t remembered telling him where she lived, nor giving him permission to show up out of the blue. Then again, she didn’t remember too much from the masquerade. Except for maybe something that she had sworn would never happen again. “Wish I could say the same,” she attempted to tease back, but her voice lacked its usual tone. Kirigan was a demon, after all, and based upon the symptoms, she could only assume it affected mortal species only. “What are you doing here?”
