Oh, you want to know why!? WELL I WILL TELL YOU. I ship Sanemi and Giyuu for a LOT of reasons. I will try to remain coherent as I write you the essay you asked for.
Relationship Arc: This is the reason I started shipping them in the first place. Sanemi and Giyuu have an incredibly satisfying emotional arc that is canon, the only question being whether or not there's a romantic component. Theirs is a classic Misunderstanding trope (you can frame it as "Enemies to Lovers" if you like, though they're not enemies by any stretch of the imagination, but the principle is the same.) You have two emotionally repressed, traumatized characters who start out here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And end up here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only thing they needed was something to push them beyond their misunderstandings and miscommunications. Once that was addressed it left a vacuum in their relationship that allowed for the development of friendship (canonically) and romance (le ship). They are a BEAUTIFUL love story. There is so much room for growth in their dynamic. Not only as a couple, mind you, but individually! Which brings me to point number two...
Compatibility: Sanemi & Giyuu are incredibly compatible romantic partners and are good for each other, giving one another opportunities to grow and heal individually within the safety of the other. There's quite a bit of pushback against their compatibility, but that is only true if you take them (Sanemi in particular) at face value.
Sanemi & Giyuu seem like they are very different, but truly, they are extremely similar, and this gives them balance. Their similarities start with the fact that they have the same story: torn from their family at a young age by a demon and then taken in by someone their age that became a close friend (and likely early romantic interest in both cases) who they then also lost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their similarities don't lie only in the circumstances that brought them together, but in their personalities. At a glance, this seems absurd, but it isn't if you look beneath their surfaces. Yes, Sanemi is Angry. But so is Giyuu! Giyuu is socially inept. But so is Sanemi! Sanemi is violent. But so is Giyuu! The only difference is in their volume. But people stick "Loud" and "Quiet" into stereotypes and boxes and don't realize that if you get past the fact that Sanemi wears his emotions on his sleeve, and Giyuu keeps them shut in a box, they're the same.
This is why they work.
Giyuu doesn't judge Sanemi's anger, because he understands it (Evidence: Giyuu is the only one who doesn't berate Sanemi after his outburst at his first Hashira meeting). Giyuu doesn't fear Sanemi's anger, because he knows where it is coming from. Giyuu is strong, a Hashira equal in strength to Sanemi. Giyuu can give Sanemi the space he needs to learn to be still, to let go of his need to be in control, his need to always be protecting, always being the person who takes care of everyone else. Giyuu is a space where Sanemi can stop being hard, stop being angry, where he can finally, for once, be vulnerable and rest.
Sanemi, on the flip side, gives Giyuu the space to learn how to express all of the things that he feels instead of keeping them shut down behind a mask. Giyuu admires Sanemi's ability to freely express himself, because he feels unable to do so. Sanemi challenges Giyuu, pushes him to speak. He asks him to open up. (Ex. Pushing Giyuu for answers at the Hashira Training Arc meeting) He forces him to admit/accept his worthiness as a Hashira (Ex. Training with him; Telling him to snap out of it and fighting alongside him in the final battle)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Fun little thing: Look at the handguard on the katana that Sanemi threw to Giyuu. It's the water version of his pinwheel. Love that.)
Next is the more shallow reason I have for shipping them, and that is...
Aesthetic: They're PRETTY together They have a lot of contrasting visual dynamics that make them visually pleasing. White hair/Black hair. Conventional Beauty vs Unconventional Beauty. Wind/Water. And the fanart is divine, truly.
Finally, a brief argument for Canon:
I think there are canon-based arguments to be made that A) Sanemi is gay (A lot of it from the Signs of the Wind LN but I feel like that is another post) and B) At bare minimum, Giyuu canonically is attracted to Sanemi. This isn't completely out of left field as long as someone is willing to be open minded. They're subtle things, but they're there. At the meeting where Tanjiro is on trial, Giyuu doesn't acknowledge anyone or anything until Sanemi shows up and speaks. His sass when Sanemi says that gaining a mark should be simple reads to me like inept flirting. Their spar is HIGHLY emotionally charged. And No one will convince me that Giyuu, at twenty one years old, picked out Sanemi (who allegedly "hates" him) of ALL the Hashira, just because he wants to be "friends". Look at his face...
Tumblr media
And whether or not anyone agrees, someone at Ufotable ships them. This is official art, posted LIKE THIS, on twitter...
Tumblr media
I don't blame anyone for not liking them, and I am not one to push my ship on anyone else (I'm only extra enthusiastic in my post here because you asked for an essay, and by golly, I decided I wanted to give you one) But these are all reasons that factor into why they are my OTP, and my favorite ship that I have ever shipped literally ever. I'm very normal about them.
Thanks for giving me an opportunity to yap about my blorbos! <3
Question for SaneGiyu shippers why do you ship it
I don't want "Just because ! " . I want you to give me an essay- if you'd like- on why you ship SaneGiyu. "Evidence " highly encouraged

This this this ALL OF THIS 🙌🫶👏
a significant percentage of this fandom is so homophobic or at least is weird when it comes to queer ships, im surprised that more people aren't talking about it. people go out of their way to hate on a cute gay ship (probably shinomitsu, sanegiyuu, kananezu) because "it makes no sense" or "one of the characters is canonically with someone else". for example, i was on pinterest and saw this one panel of sanemi and giyuu eating together after the final battle.
Tumblr media
this was it. no text. nothing. it was just a panel and it had nothing to do with the ship. yet somehow, most the comments were yapping about how this was the worst ship on planet earth and how its shippers are delusional which is so... weird? and im not even that much of a sanegiyuu shipper. if literally one panel of the characters sitting next to each other is enough to trigger your hatred towards their ship, something is very wrong in my opinion. if you're like this, dni and block me. lots of people unironically believe that queer ppl are more privileged in this fandom because gay ships happen to be more popular which is the most chronically online take I have ever come across because usually, it's the other way around. sabigiyuu has been getting hate for years because "it's minor x adult" even though all sabigiyuu shippers ship both sabito and giyuu as teenagers or adults yet I have never seen anyone say the same thing about sanekana. kanae died as a minor and sanemi is currently 21 so why is no one saying anything about them? "she would have been the same age as sanemi if she lived" sabito also would have been as old as giyuu if he lived so why is one getting so much hate for being a "proship" while the other automatically gets a pass? (sabigiyuu hate is NOT valid on this page)
disliking a ship is one thing and hating a ship that happens to be queer will not make you homophobic but going out of your way to comment about how much you hate the ship on content that's clearly targeted towards the shippers is dumb and sometimes is rooted in homophobia. don't go on a sanegiyuu fan art and comment how it doesn't make sense and expect people to side with you. a shinomitsu fan art will not kill you and am saying this as someone who doesn't even like the ship. people often hate this ship under the guise that "mitsuri is in love with obanai" or "they don't have many scenes together". obamitsu is canon, yes, but this doesn't mean that if someone dislikes the ship or ships another ships involving the two should automatically be arrested. and keep in mind that they're canonically best friends and they have interactions in the light novels which are honestly beautiful. shinomitsu shippers, ily.
"the ship doesn't make sense" ships don't have to and never had to make sense for them. shipping in engraved in fandom culture and people always will ship whatever they want. most of the fanon ships some of you hate on actually do have interactions and chemistry and even if it doesn't, you should still be respectful and stop acting so damn childishly. istg some people will BURN if they visit any other fandom because rareships are much more common out there. mate, what do you mean sanemi x obanai is a rareship? do you even know what a rareship actually is? and sorry but most of these queer ships usually have more chemistry than the canon ones too so stop whining. muitan, for example, has more chemistry than inoaoi or tankana (no hate towards the ships) even though it's fanon and the other two are canon so guess what? more people will ship them.
"people were homophobic in the taisho era" one, there is a canonically bi and aroace character. two, this is straight up false information. three, the show consists of swordsmen working behind the government's back and demons. what makes you think they give a shit about the people around them being homophobic?
honestly some of yalls excuses are stupid too. honorary mention but I saw someone hate on kananezu because kanao is married to tanjiro and that she and nezuko are sisters which means that the ship is, you guessed it, fucking incest. holy shit, we're losing the plot so bad.
conclusion: don't be homophobic. yay!!! (please let people ship queer ships in god damned peace without arguing about their ship is stupid or trash and that they're delusional for even liking it in the first place. trust me when I tell you that you writing "THIS IS SO TRASH" on a ship post will NOT stop the shippers from liking the ship)

Google docs isn’t deleting your docs just because they have lewd text.
OP turned off reblogs of the post due to being debunked, but here’s a link of the reblog so you can still read stuff. Hate Google all you want but misinformation helps no one.

If you do not make a follow up for "Break My Heart Again" where Sanemi and Giyu reconcile and buy pancakes together, I'm going to write it with my own hands (jokes aside, I really love your work. I read it a thousand more times than I would like to admit)
Anon! They're going to reconcile, I swear! I have a plan, it's on the list to be written, don't worry! I'm so sorry for the wait.
Thank you, though, your message really made me day (and gave me a kick of motivation!) - I hope you have a wonderful day too!

Sanemi wound his arms around Giyuu’s waist, holding him closer. “No one gets to tell us who to love, Giyuu,” he murmured against Giyuu’s shoulder before kissing a path up the side of his neck. He pressed his forehead to Giyuu’s temple. “They don’t get to choose for us.”
“Not even the universe?” Giyuu joked quietly. “Not even the goddamn universe,” he returned. -- Sanemi & Giyuu were never meant to fall in love, each of their souls bound to another and lost to tragedy. The expectations of a society where soulmarks are destiny were never enough to stop them from choosing each other anyway.

‘I’m only going to close my eyes for a minute,’
Famous last words, Sanemi thought as he listened to the deep, steady breathing of the man lying on the engawa beside him, curled on his side with his head resting near Sanemi’s leg. He must have slept poorly last night. The nightmares, maybe. Or his arm again. Sanemi thinks he should ask when Giyuu wakes up. But for now… Oh well, Sanemi sighs. If Giyuu needs to sleep, then let him sleep. Sanemi doesn’t mind the quiet, and it’s enough to be in Giyuu’s company, even if that company is dead to the world.
He sips his tea, glancing down at Giyuu again. He smiles at the relaxation on his face, absent the man's familiar reserve. Only Giyuu could make sleeping look more alive than being conscious. Although truthfully, Giyuu hasn't been so cold lately. And things between them are...good. More than good. Sanemi tilts his head as he looks at Giyuu, tracing the lines of his features. The sun shines off his pale skin, warming it, and his hair is as glossy black as raven’s wings, falling into his eyes. Sanemi’s fingers twitch, and before he thinks better of it, gives in to the urge to reach out and brush Giyuu’s hair off his forehead, tucking it behind his ear. It’s soft under his fingers, and the quiet touch does nothing to disturb Giyuu. So he lets his hand run through it once more, just to see how it feels threaded through his fingers, and his heart beats a little harder.
Someone clears their throat, and Sanemi yanks his hand away as though Giyuu’s hair suddenly burned him, eyes flying wide as he looks up and sees Tengen standing in the open doorway to the mansion.
“I hope I’m not interrupting,” he says, and there’s a tease in his voice, but his expression is soft, his good eye glancing between Sanemi and his sleeping companion with what seems like understanding. Sanemi feels a flush creep onto his face.
“Uzui,” Sanemi clears his throat, “No, we were just…” Sanemi looks down at Giyuu’s sleeping form at his side. “He fell asleep,” he finishes lamely. As if that much weren’t obvious.
“Mind if I keep you company until he wakes up?” Tengen asks, sweeping his hair out of his face with his hand.
“No, that’s fine. You can have Tomioka’s cup, he fell asleep before he used it,” Sanemi gestures at the tray carrying the tea and the untouched cup.
Tengen nods his thanks and folds himself to the engawa.
“Why are you here?” Sanemi asks. He tries to keep his eyes off of Giyuu, tries to keep his hand in his lap. It's harder than it should be.
“Do I need a reason to visit my friends?” Tengen chuckles, then says, “I confess, I expected I’d be visiting you each separately.”
“Well…we…” Sanemi scrambles for an explanation. “I mean. It’s just us a lot of the time. There’s not a lot to do around here, and—”
“Shinazugawa,” Tengen interrupts, pouring the tea into his cup. He glances up, his jeweled eye patch glinting in the sunlight, the fuchsia of his remaining eye glimmering with amusement. “You don’t owe me an explanation for who you spend your time with, or how.”
Sanemi relaxes, and nods. They spend the next hour catching up. Sanemi tells him how his recovery is going, but mostly Tengen talking about what he’s been spending his time doing, how he and his wives have been pursuing a business in fashion of all things, and how Hinatsuru is expecting. Imagining Tengen as a father is a strange image, but somehow it works, and Sanemi is happy for him.
Sanemi isn’t sure when in the course of the conversation his hand ends up back in Giyuu’s hair, idly smoothing the ebony locks as they chat. He doesn’t even really realize that he’s doing it until Tengen sighs contentedly and asks, “So you and Tomioka, huh?” He leans back on his hand, and calls to the sky, “You owe me a drink, Kyojuro!”
Freezing, Sanemi’s first instinct is to deny the claim, despite the evidence that is in plain sight. But… He likes the way that Giyuu’s hair feels beneath his fingers. He likes the way that the man smiles at him lately. He likes the time they spend together, and he likes the lingering glances and the quiet touches and the soft words. He likes the way Giyuu makes his skin warm and his heart beat. He likes the way that being with him makes the pain of losing everything else hurt less.
And really, does it matter so much if Tengen knows?
So…he doesn’t deny it. Despite the way he feels his cheeks burning. Despite the embarrassment that makes his voice catch in his throat. Despite the fear that Tengen wouldn’t truly understand, except—
“Wait. You…made a bet with Kyojuro…?” Sanemi asks slowly.
Tengen laughs outright. “Shinazugawa, if you could have seen the way you looked when you sparred with Tomioka back then, you would have taken that bet too.”
Sanemi gapes, gesturing at Giyuu’s sleeping form. “I hated him, Uzui.”
“Did you?” Tengen chuckles.
“Yes,” Sanemi insists, "Or, I mean, I thought I did."
With a shrug, Tengen says, “The line between love and hate is a razor’s edge, I guess. Kyojuro thought you’d never figure it out. I disagreed.” He looks at Sanemi and smiles warmly. “I’m happy for you.”
Sanemi looks down at Giyuu again, watches the way his eyelashes flutter and his lips gently lift, and Sanemi thinks he must be dreaming something nice. Affection swirls through him in warm eddies and twisting whirls. Maybe he had always been drawn to Giyuu in some way... Maybe he just didn't recognize it for what it was back then. He scoffs lightly. Shit, he hates that Tengen was right. The man doesn't need anything else to inflate his ego. But looking at Giyuu now, Sanemi can't care about that.
He feels a fond smile pull at his features, and his voice is gentle when he quietly admits to Tengen, “I’m happy too.”

Ough. This is my worst performing fic I have ever posted for kny 😂 I guess people don't like tragic romance and unhappy endings. But ya know what? I tagged it. So I shan't claim the blame. You clicked on it people, what did you think was gonna happen!
Maybe it was always going to end up this way, Sanemi thought as he watched Giyuu meticulously do up the buttons on his shirt. He could still see the rich bloom of maroon across his chest, right over his heart, a match to the array of marks like rose petals scattered across his throat and the back of his neck. Marks. Evidence that Tomioka Giyuu had a heart. Or so Sanemi had thought until… This was a mistake.
Sanemi really should have known better.

Kimetsu no Yaiba References
A collection of basic references, with links to more in-depth explanations and analysis. As much as possible details are taken from canon sources, but for what isn’t expressly stated, sleuthing was required and therefore has a margin of error. Some sections are also outside-research based for what is hopefully handy meta, especially for fanfic writers. Note: This post is likely to be edited with future additions.
Please see below the cut for the following topics:
- When does Kimetsu no Yaiba take place? - Attempted timelines of various characters and canon events - Where does Kimetsu no Yaiba take place? - What are the official Corp ranks? - Translations of some canon material printed outside the manga - Meta analysis with close reading of canon or outside research on: ——-Demons mechanisms ——-Name analysis ——-Taisho Period details ——-Traditional patterns and symbolism ———–and more…

I've never written SaneGiyuu with a sad ending until now. So much angst. All the hurt, none of the comfort. Two broken hearts. This fic is torturous. I'm in pain. I'm gonna have to write copious amounts of fluff after this. I may never recover.
