Wings
Prompt: "You can close your eyes now." Pairing: Levi Ackerman x Eren Jaeger 'Angels will come home, At a time that is not theirs, To heal your false wounds.' Levi Ackerman scoffed at the sight before him. How pathetic. Everyone loses someone everyday. It was the natural state of things. To be able to gain something, something else must be given in return. To be able to gain a sword, you must give iron. To be able to gain peace, one must be strong enough to suffer through pain. To be able to let go, one must be strong enough to accept. To be able to be reborn, one must die. He didn't know whether it was the beautiful sunshine pouring through the windows that didn't set the mood. He didn't know if it was the fact that spring was beginning to change the dark scenery into a much brighter one or if it was the fact that victory was theirs. Levi Ackerman, for the first time in his life, felt peace. He felt whole, and he felt complete. The Lance Corporal was pulled out of his reverie when a knock came from his door. Glaring in annoyance, he told the person to come in. "Corporal Ackerman, Sir." Saluted Armin Arlert, his blond hair curling messily around his ears from being sliced in midair by a stray sword. The blond didn't seem to mind. Levi sized him up. His hair was a mess, his clothes were a mess, and his eyes were messed, as if they'd seen things that would scar him for life. Levi let out a small 'tch' in annoyance at the ruggedness of his cadet - officer, now - and stood up, knowing what he was there for. Turning around to stare at the scenery just outside his window, he crossed his arms. "I'll be there in a moment. Tell them not to wait. Start immediately." He muttered, dark eyes scanning, searching for something missing. Those dark orbs searching for something that he knew would never come back. "With all due respect sir, Commander Hanji said that you should be there-" started Armin, voice wobbly. Levi cut him off. "Four-eyes won't care. I'll be there." He turned to shoot a glare at his officer when he realized that Armin was shaking at staring at the floor. "So you'd miss hi-his his..." Levi growled in impatience and annoyance. "I didn't say I would miss it-" "He would've been happy to know that the man he admired so must have was at least going to pay him his last respects, especially after everything that he has done for humanity-" "Arlert! Listen here, you little shit! I'm not taking Hanji's orders, and I can do whatever the hell I want-" "Fine." Armin looked at his superior with undiluted disdain. "But remember, Corporal," he spat out, sarcasm lacing his words "There is no war anymore. I'm not subject to follow your orders." The usually strong but compliant boy - no man - had changed his attitude and had turned into a headstrong and firm officer, somehow similar to Levi's unattached disposition. Levi distantly heard the sound of a door being slammed into its post. The raven-haired man let out a pained groan and started to pull on his cravat and jacket. His fingers lacked their usual grace, as if he was now deemed useless since they had no war to fight anymore, and Humanity's Strongest has served his purpose. Pulling on his 3DMG and drawing his sword out, he checked his reflection on the cool, steel surface. All he saw was dark, brooding eyes that held nothing and revealed nothing. He saw the tousled hair. He saw the messy cravat dangling from his neck. He was empty, a vacuum in both time and space. He wondered why they made him keep the blade, when all that he wanted to do was to burn it and dump the liquid metal into their faces in retaliation for what they made him do. Utter pigs, those men were - they'd already freed them, allowed them to broaden their horizons - and now that their so-called 'Hero' was of no use to them, they made Levi kill him out of fear. He wished that he had killed the brat before knowing him. Maybe that would've been easier for the both of them. (Levi reminded himself not to be surprised at his selfishness, which yet again, emerged after he had lost his mind along with the loss of his breath.) Scoffing, he placed his sword back in its sheath and walked out of the room, not bothering to close the door. His feet lead him to the training grounds near the woods, eyes spotting a rather large assembly. He trailed behind each and everyone of them as to not disturb their mourning in what was supposed to be a day of rest and peace. He glared at the fact that they didn't even find the body. He wondered if they even tried to look. Turning on his heel, his feet started to turn him into the direction of the stables. Finding his steed, he mounted it and coaxed it to begin the trot to wall Maria - a rather useless thing now, having being able to serve its purpose. The man felt detached, as if his consciousness was something entirely separate from his body. In the last few hours, he let his body move on its own, as it seemed to know exactly what he wanted done. Arriving at the wall, the Corporal climbed to its peak, letting his worn hands scrape at the stone. Even he was surprised that he felt even the slightest bit of pain. He'd been feeling numb recently and he didn't like it. Perhaps he'd been that way for all his life but he'd been able to suppress it. Well, until now. Reaching the top, hands bathing in small droplets of his blood, he jumped. He closed his eyes and felt the air rush through his body and encase him like a blanket. Opening his eyes at the very last second, he pulled out his gear and aimed for the nearest tree. Eyes widening slightly, he saw the silhouette of a boy running along, as if he were teasing Levi and slightly coaxing him to move faster, as if he was running out of time. He could almost see the brunet laughing, teasing him and leading him somewhere. His eyes sparkled as usual and Levi couldn't find it in him to insult the boy. He was leading him somewhere, and in a clearing, Levi saw the boy climb a tree and sat down on it, patting the seat beside him as if to call Levi and make him sit beside him. Levi conceded, and stood beside the sitting boy. "Oi, brat. Why aren't you back at headquarters?" He queried, a half-hearted glare settling over his features. "Oh. I'm just tired, I guess." The teal eyed boy looked up to stare at Levi. His features settled into those of shock. "Levi-Heichou! You look... well..." he paused. Levi's mouth morphed into a small smirk, not exactly feeling it. "Pretty bad." "Is there something wrong, Jaeger?" Eren looked at him, slightly terrified. "I, uh, if you want, I can fix it, Corporal..." Levi sat and turned to face Eren, the latters' hands gently untying the hastily made cravat. Levi felt cool air wherever Eren touched, and the Corporal relaxed slightly. Once Eren was done tying the piece of cloth around Levi's neck, his hand made its way towards Levi's messy hair but hesitated. Levi raised a cold hand, held Eren's, and guided it to his raven hair. Eren softly brushed his hands across his superiors black locks, and Levi found his eyes closing. He felt at peace. The hands started to brush his hair, fixing it and making Levi Ackerman look like Humanity's Strongest yet again. "Say, Corporal, I'm getting a little sleepy..." the hands slowed in their movements. Levi Ackerman thickly swallowed his own words, opting to let Eren Jaeger linger just a moment more- His resolve broke. The Corporal smiled gently. The next words that came out of his mouth broke him as much as it gave him rest. "Thank you for all your service." Levi held the boy's hands. They were getting colder and colder by the second "Thank you for the discharge, Corporal." It started to rain. Diamonds started to pour down Levi's face. "You can close your eyes now." He stared one last time at the messy brown hair and the determined, bright eyes before they closed. Eren rested his head against Levi's shoulder, totally in utter peace. The hands he was holding vanished, leaving behind a green hood. Levi Ackerman stood up and rose to meet the beautiful sunlight. A gust of wind buffered him, seemingly fastening a tattered, green cloak around his shoulders and he was forced to stand straight. He was forced to stand proud. Levi Ackerman wiped the rain off his face, shoulders held high, a glare set on his timeless face. As he raised his blade to leave the area, he realized that it might be the last time that he ever used his gear. He wasn't only losing Eren, he was also losing himself. Levi Ackerman decided that it was alright. Levi Ackerman raised his sword one last time and sped toward the walls that he was sure they would put down and demolish. Lance Corporal Levi Ackerman of the Survey Corps, Humanity's Strongest, had gained his wings. It was about time that he left his home and took flight.
