\ My experiment attempts to explore ideas of identity in online spaces through the exploration of femininity through the female gaze. The methodologies I adopted to do this were inspired by Heroic Purgatory by Yoshishige Yoshida (1970), where I attempted a variety of framing techniques in the composition of my shots exemplified in this film. My character was a homage to Marie I and Marie II from Daisies by Vera Chytilová (1966). Techniques from this film I borrowed in the use of colour which are metaphors of the online spaces we inhabit. ‘Media, by altering the environment evoke in us unique ratios of sense perceptions. The extension of any one sense alters the way we think and act - they way we perceive the world. The way we perceive our bodies. When these ratios change, we change’ - Marshall McLuhan. It is from this that I quite literally wanted to use ratio, and have a female body ‘move through’ them in which I attempted to show through the three mirrors, a metaphor for the reflection of the self. I recorded my friend playing the guitar and edited in protools with reverse, layering with film statics and repetition.

Trying more vibrant hues and split screen methods. Editing each ratio in a seperate project and then exporting into the master draft.

The main source of inspiration for my concept and character was from Vera Chytilová’s 1966 ‘Daisies.’ I was inspired by her use of sound, use of colour and the femininity of Marie II and Marie I.
Last year I came across the Marshall McLuhan ‘The Medium is the message.’ This book was published in 1967 and is an amazing prophecy into the human condition and how our ideas of self formulate in these new digital and online spaces. ‘Media, by altering the environment evoke in us unique ratios of sense perceptions. The extension of any one sense alters the way we think and act - they way we perceive the world. The way we perceive our bodies. When these ratios change, we change’ - Marshall McLuhan. It is from this that I wanted to try to explore the very idea of quite literally the ‘ratios’ we see each other and ourselves through today. The square, the modern internet aesthetic and more often seen now as a visual code for the online spaces in social media. The 9:16 ratio is the default we see through on our devices, and the ratio in which we create our ‘stories’. The circle is a symbol of the icon, of our ‘emblem’ of who we are and what the ‘public’ must see. In addition to this, I have adopted a colour scheme using bold hues as the idea of the ‘filter’, as well as video effects commonly adopted on these social platforms. All is an attempt to defamiliarise and bring to the forefront of our minds these ratio’s, filters, and effects that have become so closely intertwined with self-identity. I adopted a minimalist aesthetic and (attempt to) borrow framing techniques from ‘Heroic Purgatory’ by Yoshishige Yoshida.
My beautiful friend Lilli features in the video. The most natural way to explore these ideas above was to do it through the exploration of femininity in these spaces. How acts become ‘performances’, how female bodies are shown and not. The acts of eating and drinking are meant to be raw, and make-up a metaphor for the the curation of identity in a version that the ‘world’ will perceive. It doesn't necessarily have to be beautiful, but it is a conscious decision in how you curate this space of you.
