"Our people are in need of land to build homes and farms", (Ramaphosa, 2018) the release of land which is also found in urban areas owned by local governments must be given to those who are in need of it. The local entities need to release land for the purposes of public interest, the publics interest to get land that is outside of the designated areas given to them during apartheid. Families are stuck with large numbers of family members living together, these families cannot reach their potential or goals because of a lack resources and this is where the problem lies, black communities need to thrive just as much as white communities. "Many of our people want to build houses in urban areas so that they move people away from designated areas...we want rapid release of public land" (Cyril Ramaphosa, 2018). Ramaphosa's aim is to get people of colour closer to the economic centres of the country. This way, people can get to work easier and are in a space where jobs are easily available.

The aim is not to target white farmers, the aim is to simply redistribute land to those who need it most. People living in urban areas have an abundance of land, some of the land which isn't used and can be given to the underprivileged who need it most. There is a lack of understanding between those who own land and those who want land. "If I am a land owner and my land is expropriated, I will fight", white farmers speak on the idea of land be expropriated, they do not want to be compensated by the government to get land in exchange because the land belongs to them. White people believe that land cannot be seen as a commodity because South African's purely want their land back because of their identity and history. They do not want their land back for the purpose of using it. This is true to a certain extent because there is a group that solely wants their land back because of the south African history of apartheid, and then there are other groups who want their land back to for their basic needs and to capitalise off of it.

opinion - It almost feels as though white people do not understand what it feels like to be black and poverty stricken, firstly your colour is a problem and secondly you are poor and need to depend on the government for survival. It is hard having those characteristics in a country where race and wealth are emphasised. Their anxiety is rooted in the fear of losing all that they have gained to people of colour. Land expropriation for instance, is an ongoing battle between blacks and white people, black people want their land back and because the government hasn't rejected this notion, whites feel a sense of fear because they might lose land.

When you're trying to figure out why you're anxious but there's no real problem so you're even more anxious.

The acts mentioned in the previous post allow for blacks to thrive first before any other race. And this is why there would be anxiety amongst white people, especially those who are not as successful as they want to be. "In the new South Africa, whiteness is perceived as a disadvantage since the privilege that accompanied it has been suspended (Steyn, 2001). This author claims that white privilege does not exist, which is completely false because whites still do not know the true feeling of poverty and helplessness, major companies in this country are still largely owned by white people, blacks still hold lower positions because of their race.

Employability
The Employment Equity Act, Affirmative Action Policies and the Black Economic Empowerment are all implemented in the interest of black people and employment. Since the apartheid regime ignored the rights for blacks and people of colour to get jobs that they qualified for, these acts allow for blacks to be prioritised in the working world. All existing companies have to make sure that they meet minimum requirement of 12% of blacks working in a company, this isn't a large percent because you'll find that companies only ever meet this requirement for governmental purposes, meanwhile there are thousands more of employable blacks.

so, why white anxiety?

In the apartheid era, employment security was guaranteed for white people. This is for before and after apartheid, whites gained the privilege of always being financially secure. This was through The Industrial Conciliation Act of 1956 which "allowed for the legal reservation of particular occupations for certain groups" (Bendix, 1996), these groups which only included white groups. Black people with good schools could not be employed in positions that would cause insecurities for white workers, these were usually the higher paying jobs like being doctors, teachers, engineers etc. Black qualified people wasted their skills all in the name of white anxiety.

Cultural life - White anxiety
"White anxiety has been defined as the package of benefits granted to people in a society who have white skin" (McIntosh, 1988), white anxiety is the feeling a white person feels whenever they feel as though people of colour are thriving better than they are, it is reversed racism where they feel their role of benefits and privilege has been swapped with people of colour. For years black people suffered the most during apartheid, their needs and rights were so far fetched that it seemed a dream to ever become a democratic country. Black people during the apartheid era did not have any privileges at all and this still affects them today.

"We can categorise FeesMustFall as a contemporary social movement that, within the local reality and with its particularities, is also part of the global struggles against capitalism and the new forms of repression pushed by it (Zizek, 2015). He defines the FMF movement by basically saying that through the history of capitalism in many countries it is known that hegemonic groups tend to grab onto all money that comes in the country, these hegemonic superpowers like the government, do not share money necessarily with those who need it most. The FMF movement rejects the power of capitalism by demanding what is rightfully theirs, education.

Police brutality
The FeesMustFall march exposed students to violence, which was introduced by the police. This also known as police brutality, police claimed that students who peacefully marched to the Union buildings became violent, this was untrue and was used as a guerrilla war tactic to get rid of students. During the aftermath of the protest, students faced trauma and some were injured due to the weapons used. Police used their power against innocent students.
