The excitement was infectious, he couldn’t help but smile with the same gusto. Only to belt out in a laugh when they had realized it was all a joke. It wasn’t even that serious yet here he was wiping a single tear from his eye after his laughing fit. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t help it. The name is Ronald Grear. Folks call me Rally, on account I can shepherd sheep as good as a well trained dog. That said, I am but a common farmer with… well, clearly too much time on his hands…” This time more of an awkward laugh left him, he sure hoped this didn’t come off as him keeping away from duties. “What about you? Your name, or should I just call you Smiley?”

“ My name’s Caspar! Caspar von Bergliez. I’m a student at the Officer’s Academy! “ He’d gone into town for some reason, he was sure of it, but wasn’t expecting to make a new friend. “ Nice to meet you! “ he held out his hand towards the other, still raring with energy. “ I’ll just call ya Rally, by the way! If, uh, if that’s okay. “ he looked at the other as if he’d find the answer in his eyes.

“ Really?! “ Caspar smiled, but then only realized that he’d been played for a fool when the boy had said he was kidding. “ Aw, I should’ve thought that one through... “ he shakes his head, putting a hand to his forehead. “ But you wanted to see me smile? I guess that’s a harmless trick. Hey, what’s your name? “

“Hey, did you know when you smile you can’t breathe?” … “Haha, Just kidding, I wanted you to smile!”

“ Hmm... a dog’s head in my lap while I rest. Sounds like a good... nap... “ he yawned yet again, before seeing the squint in the other’s eyes. “ But I assume... you might be able to understand me. Dogs are intelligent, after all... maybe you’re attached to that collar somehow. “ Dogs? Having sentimental memory? Lin wasn’t sure if he was just entertaining any thought in the state he was slowly falling into, but his mind definitely seemed to go places. Plus, if magic and all manner of things were possible in this world, surely dogs could have many things in common... Nonetheless, he continued to languidly stroke his fur.

The mage also yawned, still sitting under the tree. “ You and I are both are tired, are we? “ he followed Rally’s movements with his head, settling when he sat down. “ I mean… running does seem very tiring. What am I still doing, talking to a dog… “ he sighed, tilting his head up against the tree and closing his eyes. “ Maybe I’m going insane. That would be a thought… “

He looked over at him eventually. “ That collar does look awfully worn. Maybe one day I’ll have to go get you a better one, huh? “ It was more a joke than anything, but Lin had somewhat run over in his mind that. Either way, this dog would be identifiable by some sort of collar. “ No tags to speak of, either… “ He reached a hand out to ruffle the dog’s fur in a semi-tired haze.

With patience comes reward! His tail gently thumps against the ground as his fur is stroked, he slowly in response also lowers his head on Lin’s lap. Eyes blinking in a relaxed pace like a cat would, another learned behavior. “It’s not all that weird” Rally thought to himself, his first and only master talked to him all the time. Albeit they were mainly commands ending in a good old fashioned, “that’ll do boy.” Children especially would chat it up with him, and on rare occasions he swore some could understand him.

A loud huff, joke or not, his eyes trailed to meet Linhardt in a squint. This collar was a prized possession! Old or not, of course eventually it would probably downright break and disintegrate with all the events it goes through. A worry for another time, right now this was the closest to his youth he could get. A nice morning under a tree after a good hard day’s work.

Linhardt watched as he approached, slightly welcoming the nose tap. “ Curiouser and curiouser… “ he felt as if it would be almost rude not to take the dog’s paw in his hand. Sure, there were strays around the monastery, but as he studied the dog, the leather collar would set him apart from them.

“ Did you run off or something, perhaps? “ his own head slightly tilted, and he felt the urge to try to pet the dog. Sure, it hadn’t displayed any violent tendencies, and was nice. Plus, he’d realized he changed his way of speaking to a softer tone. You know, the ‘voice’ you use to talk to animals. “ No, that’d have been a while ago judging by your collar… “ he trailed off, before smiling at him. “ Nevermind that. You’re a new but welcome presence. “ Plus, furry and soft…

Run off? Yes and no. Like a nervous tick Rally scratched under his collar with his hind leg as well as making a chuffing sound with his jowls. Some might think a dog has no business worrying about their self image but Rally was an adult of a breed renowned for its smarts, so, the very idea that seeming like a delinquent dog who ran from there master without an ounce of regret was far from the truth. Him? A bad boy? Perish the thought! Perhaps it was a mix of the tone of voice and the smell this one gave but one could not help but yawn. Pawing at his own muzzle and mouth almost as an apology. Would it be rude to follow? Would it warrant leading on the idea he was fine with being owned by a complete stranger? Hopefully not. But he was a curious soul and the blood of being domesticated was burning strong, in the sense that being around humans was most likely the feeling a wild wolf got when with his pack. Safety one would gauge. The only way he could have let them know was to give a trot around them and firmly hold position at their side after a once around.
