To me, Jenny isnât the kidsâ mother figure, sheâs like an older sister figure. But, the parents disappeared so sheâs in charge now. Like she wasnât planning to raise these kids, she didnât even really want to raise kids, but sheâs gonna do it now. Because if not her, who else? Sheâs not gonna leave some kids.

you die in an attic; freezing cold.
you die in an attic, and something about this feels almost like a gift.
you die in an attic, far out of your father's reach, far away from your place beneath his boots and belt.
you die in an attic, not the basement like you often wondered. you die bruisedâand this you anticipated, but somehow, you do not die afraid.
you die in an attic, bruised and freezing but not afraid. you die softly, when the coughing has ceased and edwin's opened a new book; reading with his particular way of sounding out words, so clipped and proper and so far removed from your father's rage.
you die in an attic. heaven opens itself up right in front of you, in the form of a kind boy with odd stories and warm light; and you do not die in a basement.
you die in an attic, ready to reach out your hand towards edwin, your eyes looking up towards the skyâthe rising sun almost pale in the wake of the lantern that started it all.
up and onto brighter things, you think. you die in an attic.

Maybe this has been said before, but when Edwin says âthe living are messyâ, I donât think he just means that they supposedly have more problems or drama than ghosts do. I think heâs more referring to their aliveness, their mortality, how fragile they are. Edwin knows that if they befriend Crystal and she joins them on their cases theyâll have to be constantly making sure she doesnât get herself killed- in his eyes, it would be like babysitting an excitable puppy. Which, actually, yes, he even mentions the infamous puppy debacle when referring to her, and Charles âkeepingâ her. We donât know what went down during that case but we can assume that something bad happened as a result of keeping the puppy around, or Charles was upset when it left- probably both. To him Crystal is just a disaster and an upset waiting to happen. Something will happen to her, or sheâll get killed, or more long term, sheâll leave them, and Charles will be distraught.
Iâve seen a lot of fanfics and fanart tackling the idea of Crystalâs eventual death, and even though itâs a long time in the future we can assume Edwin at least considers this. Because if (god forbid) Crystal stays around long enough to get old, eventually sheâll die, and what will happen then? What will happen to Charles? And in Edwinâs perception of time, that isnât actually that long, given that during the show heâs technically 123 years old.
So yeah. This doesnât take into account all of Edwinâs many complicated feelings about Crystal, being alive, what it means to be dead- but for a ghost, the living are really fucking messy.

this is so beautiful wow
So, we all love to talk about Charles and Edwin and Orpheus and Eurydice. Makes sense, yeah, it's literally name-checked in the show.
But I've been thinking a lot lately about the Hindu story of Savitri and Satyavan, about a princess who fell in love with a man destined for early death, and yet despite knowing this, she insists on marrying him, even trading in her usual royal garb for the red garments of a peasant, because she loves him too much to allow him to die without her. And then, when he dies, she follows the god of death in order to retrieve her husband, making clever bargain and clever bargain until she actually succeeds on bringing her husband back from the afterlife.
Thinking about Savitri, in red garments, following her husband to the afterlife and bringing him back, because she cannot imagine abandoning him to the fate destined for him. Because she cannot live without him.
Thinking about Charles Rowland, and his heritage, and the fact that connecting with his mother's heritage and religion and history could bring him closer to the more hopeful version of the tale, for the boy that has no interest in reading to the end of the tragedy.
Just, Charles Rowland and Savitri.

Thereâs something to analyse about the fact that crystal, who was neglected by her parents, was so insistent that the boys help Becky a girl who currently is stuck without her parents who are distraught by her being missing

The Tall Tree Forest sign location

Forest - Seeking Stones & Tall Tree Sign
đUpper Coquitlam River Park, 1791 Pipeline Rd., Coquitlam
First Photo - Group, Tall Tree Sign Frame Edit Courtesy of: @fear0phobia
Crystal & Charles Frame Edit Courtesy of: @crystalpalacesasaki
Group Frame Edit Courtesy of: @every-moment-a-different-sound
Location bts:
These locations are both part of a trail closer to the road and field. During filming the grass hosted the 'circus'- meaning the trucks, equipment, trailers etc. The field is a RC model airplane flying space with a built-in runway.

I had a bit of trouble finding the Tall Tree Forest sign location but I believe this is the right area due to the rocks/background trees. The shot with the sign and the forest ghosts is by these rocks and the shot with Monty, Crystal, Edwin and Charles is a nearby river area.
The rest of these frames take place further down this same trail, and if you continue to follow it you will find a racetrack area used by the Coquitlam Model Racing Club. They seem to race most weekends during fair weather and welcome spectators.

A bit of a random fact, but I thought it was quite neat: Charlotte Romses, who in this scene plays the 'Young School Marm,' is a circus master trainer in aerials and specializes in aerial silks, aerial hoops and trapeze.
