My First Tooth Drawing Experience
Tumblr media
Last September 30, I, in my Oral Anatomy class, had my first experience in formal or proper tooth drawing. I am very nervous but super excited at that time. I am not really good at drawing but because I want to be a dentist, I have to learn how to do it. Studying dentistry is really surprising and fun because I get to experience a lot of things and develop in me new skills such as drawing.
During my first proper tooth drawing experience, I encountered a lot of difficulties because I am only a beginner in it. I actually had to rewatch for so many times the informative videos that my professors posted so that I can do my drawing properly. As I was drawing, I keep going back to the videos because whenever I check my drawing, it does not really look like the tooth model that I was copying. For my first drawing, I draw the right maxillary central incisor. I think most of us started drawing this tooth because it is the first one that we actually studied which was followed by the lateral incisors. I think that studying how to properly draw a tooth online is the very first concern or difficulty. I think that tooth drawing is something that really needs to be thought face to face but we cannot do that because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though that is the case, I believe that our professors were able to do a really good job in helping us as much as they can to teach and guide us in tooth drawing. They provided us with informative videos and they are very approachable whenever we seek comments on our tooth drawings. Another difficulty that I encountered is when it comes to the measures that affected the tooth that I am drawing. When I was drawing, I kept asking my classmates for their measurements because sometimes I think that the root of my drawing is too long or the crown of my drawing is too long or my drawing is too wide. Our measurements were not the same even though we were using the same model. These varying measurements affected how our drawings look. I initially think that my drawing is not in proportion to my tooth model because maybe I measured the tooth incorrectly. The next difficulty that I encountered was connecting the dots in my drawing. From the videos of my professors, the technique that we used in the drawing is plotting or marking the values on our paper with a dot and connecting them afterward. I am not sure how to connect the dots, especially on the root part. I was contemplating if I should connect the dots more straight or a little curvy. I am also unsure how curve or edgy a structure should be. However, I, fortunately, learn what should I do from the comments made by my professors.
My first tooth drawing is not really good but I am not sad. I am actually happy because from how that drawing looked along with the comments of my professors, I now know what to do with my other tooth drawings. I now know what to improve and how to do my drawings better the next time I draw. I know that I still have a lot to improve with my drawing but I am glad that I am learning and doing better as I practice and practice my drawing. It took me I guess two hours to finish my first set of tooth drawings for the maxillary central incisor. I drew the labial view first followed by lingual, mesial, distal, and incisal views. It took me a lot of time because I kept going back to the videos of my professors about tooth drawing. I do not really have a personal technique in tooth drawing because I strictly followed the videos of my professors. I have not drawn a lot of teeth yet so I am still figuring out my technique but lately, what I have been doing is that, since the boxes for labial and lingual views and mesial and distal views are parallel when I mark dots on labial, I mark dots on the lingual too before I connect the dots.
My first tooth drawing experience is really fun and helpful. I am very thankful for my professors for guiding us throughout our first tooth drawing experiences. I am very excited and quite nervous about the other activities that we are going to do in our Oral Anatomy class. That’s all. Thank you for reading my blog! Stay safe and healthy.
