As a college student... please for the love of god do not slap a giant, bolded countdown to MIDTERMS on my dash at the beginning of the semester. You practically gave me a heart attack...
Some facts to be mindful of as we head toward the Midterms
A bipartisan report released by the CIA, FBI, NSA, and ODNI stated unequivocally that Russia, under orders from Putin, carried out a far-reaching cyber operation with the goal of interfering in the 2016 U.S. elections.
One branch of this attack involved fake Russian accounts spreading disinformation, discord, and inflammatory content (in a word, propaganda) across many social media platforms, most notably Facebook and Instagram, but also tumblr. The Department of Justice indicted 13 Russians and 3 Russian companies for these actions. The defendants referred to their activities as “information warfare”, and stated that their goal was to “spread distrust towards the candidates and the political system in general.”
In spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, President Trump has dismissed reports of Russian meddling as “ridiculous”, and has publicly stated that he believes Putin’s assertions that Russia did not interfere in the 2016 U.S. elections.
We should all be concerned about outside powers seeking to interfere with the integrity of our elections, regardless of which candidates or parties benefit from such interference.
As the midterms approach, be wary of voices sowing discord, fear, and despair. Look for solutions and ways to help instead.
Be wary of anyone who says your vote doesn’t matter. It does.
Be wary of anyone who says that “both sides” are the same. They’re not.
Be wary of anyone who says an election result is a foregone conclusion. It isn’t.
Be wary of anyone who argues for ideological purity and categorical rejection of “flawed” candidates. Perfect people do not exist.
Be wary of sharing posts from sources you do not recognize or know to be trustworthy. Always corroborate with a reputable source.
These people want you to stay home on election day. They don’t want you to exercise your rights and your power at the ballot box. Remember, voter turnout is always lower in non-presidential years, which means your vote counts for more.

Sometimes it blows my mind that there are people that don’t wear glasses/contacts. Like they can literally see with no aid. Like they wake up and just be out here seeing. What a wild concept.

Too true. I just think that there’s a line between society finding a balance between stem and art and people overreacting by treating stem majors like uncreative and/or boring people. And I like taking the devils advocate position. Cause I can.
Why do people want to live in the sad little world where STEM is the only thing worth doing, anyway? Is your ideal society a battleship with no windows because seeing outside is a needless luxury? Is your personal mascot a worker ant? Do you read 1984 and sigh wistfully, then throw the book away in rage because reading fiction is not Productive and writers are not Productive People?
or are you big ‘ol hypocrites who actually enjoy the fruits of art and design and liberal arts every day, but you just don’t want to admit it because then you won’t feel special for knowing how to slap together three lines of javascript

Lmao
you're 95% right that you shouldn't learn history from video games but honestly Age of Empires II's scenario introductions are VERY correct
Oh yeah Age of Empires is awesome!
I’m actually a little surprised at saying Civ shows history as linear tell that to my medieval lancers stationed by the nuclear reactor.

Aye, and any video game is a good starting point; I’ll be the first to point out the wide variety of inaccuracies in Rome II, Total War, but the game gave me a large base of questions to research and discover, and provided a decent framework in which to set the information I gained.
As with everything on that post, the trick is moderation; videogames can teach you some information, but they can’t be your only or your main source of information.

No yeah that’s what I mean. I’m just grumpy at the moment. Point being my father has some very set ideas on what my life should look like and I fully disagree.

Translation; no, dad, I don’t need to focus on going to college immediately, getting the degree you think will make me the most money, and generally being a mature adult. I can fucking goof off if that’s what I think the purpose of life is.
Want to hear a hot take?

Ok but I will venture that coding is an art form of its own, as are most stem fields and I think the truly excellent in their fields understand that and realize the balance of such things.

This makes me inordinately happy. Glad you’re having fun in strategy games, my friend!
Today I played Civilization V multiplayer for six straight hours with a guy I’ve been dating for about two months. We were on a team together. He played as the Romans. It wasn’t even my suggestion. The Romans were his first pick. So I played as the Byzantines.
It’s still too early to get too many feelings invested… but is this what it feels like to have found The One™???

I genuinely believe that popularizing the concept of Total War was Adolf Hitler’s most heinous crime.
Last Gotha Raid on London
May 19 1918, London–German bombers had not attacked Britain since the start of their major offensives on the Western Front, using them instead to attack targets of military value in France and Flanders. With the Western Front momentarily quiet once more, the Gothas returned to London on the night of May 19; 38 Gothas took off from Belgium and 28 successfully reached London, where their bombs caused over 200 casualties. However, the Gothas did not get away unscathed; British AA fire took down two of them and British interceptors another three.
This was to be the last Gotha raid on London–as Ludendorff turned his attention once more to the French, the Gothas were assigned to targets on the continent–either Paris or targets of military value. One such raid occurred on the same night, when another 15 Gothas attacked the major British base at Étaples, causing over 900 casualties in a hospital there among nurses and British wounded. The start of British bombing raids on German cities may also have played a role; there was significant political pressure to stop the attacks on Britain in a vain hope the British would follow suit.
